Francis explains why St. Peter was crucified head first

Two days ago, Francis had an audience with the Prelates of the Canadian Assembly of Western Catholic Bishops on their ‘ad Limina Apostolorum’ visit.  One of the bishops, Michael J. Miller of Vancouver, shared with ACI Stampa reporter, Andrea Gagliarducci, some of what was discussed; Ecco di cosa ha parlato Papa Francesco con i vescovi canadesi.  One thing in particular stood out,

But what did [Francis] speak about in two and a half hours?    [Francis spoke] “of many things. He spoke about Peter, about the fact that he was crucified head first so that God could wash his feet.

Where does Francis come up with this garbage?

The Bible doesn’t say he was hung upside down.

Pope Che can make up whatever he wants

——The Bible doesn’t say he was hung upside down.——

The Bible doesn’t reference Peter’s death at all...

Though historically it’s probably true...not the foot washing nonsense...

Did Pope Che make this up out of thin air or has there been a theory about the foot washing nonsense.

Traditionally, Pete is said to have been crucified head down. The explanation I heard was that he begged to be crucified head down out of humility, because he did not feel that he deserved the honor of being crucified in the same manner as Jesus Christ.

By tradition (and what I was taught in Catholic School) St. Peter requested to be crucified upside-down because Peter felt he was unworthy to be executed in the same manner as Jesus

No more donations from me while Senor Bergoglio is the current Pontiff.

Your explanation is the commonly understood one - not to mention the most logical.
In any event, Bramante adorned the site with the beautiful Tempietto - at least Francis can’t take that away (he said hopefully).

What I was taught is that as a result of Peter’s humility (I’m unworthy to die in the same way as my Master), the Romans had the last laugh, inserting the cross in the ground head-first.

That is the Tradition I was taught as well.

The “foot-Washing” bit is just an extrapolation from John 13, and is TOTALLY speculative.

Although I am not Roman Catholic, I have respect for the wonderful stories and traditions of the Early Christian Martyrs. The courage that these saints had in facing down an oppressive empire, even to the death, is inspiring. Why on earth would Francis want to sully and complicate these wonderful stories with his own crazy theories?

Ooops...sorry. I just noticed the Caucus designation. You may remove my post if it is out of line.

Sorry about that.

Peace.

“Why on earth would Francis want to sully and complicate these wonderful stories with his own crazy theories?”

Same reason the Fraud did for 8 years... To denigrate and destroy Christian/Western history and values.

“The Bible doesn’t say he was hung upside down.”

It doesn’t have to. The Bible doesn’t cover every event in history and it certainly doesn’t cover every one in every detail. John 21:18-19 tells us he would be martyred and hints strongly that he would be martyred in a way similar to that of Jesus’. Early Christian writings refer to Peter’s crucifixion and some of them mention he was crucified upside down (i.e. Origen, Acts of Peter, etc.). Even Seneca, the Stoic philosopher who was Nero’s tutor (and Nero put Peter to death apparently), mentioned he had seen men crucified upside down (Seneca, De Consolatione ad Marciam, 20). Wait, I might be able to find a translation online...

Okay:

“Yonder I see instruments of torture [crosses; cruces in Latin], not indeed of a single kind, but differently contrived by different peoples; some hang their victims with head toward the ground, some impale their private parts, others stretch out their arms on a fork-shaped gibbet.” Seneca, Dialogue: De Consolatione ad Marciam (1932; repr., Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 1965) 20.3.

Apparently Josephus had seen something similar:

“The soldiers out of rage and hatred amused themselves by nailing their prisoners in different postures; and so great was their number, that space could not be found for the crosses nor crosses for the bodies.” Josephus, Jewish War 5.451.

Both Josephus and Seneca lived in the first century as did Peter. Peter and Seneca were contemporaries.

I should point out that I found the last two quotes at a Mormon site. Handle with care: https://rsc.byu.edu/archived/healing-his-wings/christ-s-crucifixion-reclamation-cross The quote from Seneca is a reliable one, however, as the reference is seen in many scholarly works.

If nothing else the Mormon site provided a neat title worth looking at: Martin Hengel, Crucifixion in the Ancient World and the Folly of the Message of the Cross (Philadelphia: Fortress, 1977).

The foot washing thing sounds like nonsense.

From the Catholic Encyclopedia:

>>Concerning the manner of Peter’s death, we possess a tradition — attested to by Tertullian at the end of the second century (see above) and by Origen (in Eusebius, Church History II.1)—that he suffered crucifixion. Origen says: “Peter was crucified at Rome with his head downwards, as he himself had desired to suffer”. As the place of execution may be accepted with great probability the Neronian Gardens on the Vatican, since there, according to Tacitus, were enacted in general the gruesome scenes of the Neronian persecution; and in this district, in the vicinity of the Via Cornelia and at the foot of the Vatican Hills, the Prince of the Apostles found his burial place. <<

The Bible also doesn’t tell us to make the Sign of the Cross when we pray, does it?
