I have read that North Africa was much wetter in the time of Christ. It was a huge producer of grain. Now it is pretty much desert.

I would guess that Palestine was also.

2,000 years ago, Romans could cross the Sahara on horseback. 8,000 years ago the Sahara area was well watered, with a large hippopotamus population.

Desertification is a regional issue though, not reflective of a common global trend.

Probably much nicer than now. after the muslims took over the region, it turned to desert.

Now that the Jews are back, Israel is becoming increasingly fertile.

Shepherds near Bethlehem means Christ’s birth was in the winter. The flocks follow the grass which follows the rain.

No one mentioned the well know fact that the Ottoman’s taxed the region based on the amount of trees which led to them all being cut down.
