Very true...
[[”cultural legacy from an outdated and obsolete vision of marriage, family, and the rights and duties of spouses”]]
Outdated? Says who? Is the law demanding paying taxes outdated too then? Laws demanding we obey speed limits? Laws demanding we not commit crimes? Are they all ‘outdated and obsolete versions of rules and regulations’?
Cripes- taking objective universal moral truths, and turning them into subjective suggestions based on the flavor of the day- that will surely make society a much ‘better’ place to live-
Not to worry. The Moslem majority will turn this around in just a couple of generations. They will insist that women be faithful.
Everything old is new again ...
Oh, of course you thought of it first.
As far as I’m concerned, marriage is between the couple and God - if they put Him in it (above and beyond mouthing a few words), it has a chance to flourish. If they leave Him out of it, it is only a living arrangement.
> As far as Im concerned, marriage is between the couple and God
This all raises interesting ideas, namely that government should get out of the “marriage” business altogether, and merely facilitate contractual “living arrangements” supported by the state (and call them something other than marriage).
To go one step farther, it might require churches to (voluntarily or by law) stop participating in the state’s contract, which they currently do when they sign the state’s marriage licenses following the nuptial.
While on one hand, it might seem to make things more complicated, I think in the long run, it would actually be simpler in a society that is no longer an homogenous Christian society.
