Cardinal-elect Cupich cites pope to justify opening Communion to ‘remarried’

October 14, 2016 (LifeSiteNews) – Chicago Archbishop and Cardinal-elect Blase Cupich told an Italian newspaper that his support of Communion for the divorced and remarried is the same position as the pope’s, the bishops of Argentina, and Cardinal Christoph Schönborn.

“My position is the same as that of Pope Francis, who has indicated that the proper interpretation of ‘Amoris Laetitia’ was given by Cardinal Christoph Schönborn and then again by the bishops of Argentina, for which the Pope noted ‘no further interpretation is needed,’” Cupich said. “So if people want to know what I think, they should refer to those sources.”

In a letter the Vatican confirmed as authentic, Pope Francis affirmed the bishops of the Buenos Aires’s new pastoral guidelines allowing the divorced and remarried to receive Holy Communion. There is “no other interpretation” of the pope’s controversial exhortation Amoris Laetitia than that of the Buenos Aires bishops, Pope Francis wrote.

Schönborn claims that Amoris Laetitia legitimizes and adopts his approach of allowing the divorced and remarried to receive Communion in some circumstances. Pope Francis has deferred to the Austrian cardinal as the definitive source on how to interpret the exhortation.

Cupich’s record as a bishop is extremely liberal. He has stopped priests and seminarians from praying outside abortion facilities at 40 Days for Life, written that unemployment and hunger are just as appalling as the killing of millions of children in the womb, and said in contradiction with Catholic canon law that giving Communion to pro-abortion politicians can be a good thing. He once even locked Catholics out of their own parish during Holy Week to prevent Traditional Latin Masses from taking place; the church had to hold its Good Friday liturgies on the sidewalk.

As a cardinal, Cupich will be eligible for the papacy and able to vote in papal elections. Pope Francis also recently appointed Cupich to the Congregation for Bishops, giving him a prominent position in picking U.S. bishops.

Cupich is wrong.

He's not wrong that his position and Francis' position are the same.

Since cupich feels abortion and poverty are on the same level, the KKK could open abortion clinics and wipe out as many blacks as they can handle...As long as they help feed the poor blacks...That way the KKK can state they are helping the poor and blacks...Can`t be racist if you help blacks, right????

“written that unemployment and hunger are just as appalling as the killing of millions of children in the womb”

Anyone who could make such a comparison has some serious dysfunction in their mental processes. If I am jobless, I may find a job tomorrow. If I am hungry, I may find a meal tomorrow. If I am aborted, every such subsequent opportunity in this life has been denied to me, forever.

The Church in America is suffering a demographic cratering.
Attendance has fallen by nearly half over the past fifteen years. Faithful Catholics die off and they aren’t being replaced. The financial cratering is beginning to hit now.

I expect they will pull out all stops to try and reverse this. Even stops that don’t square with the Church’s teaching.

- Open Borders - bring more Catholic Hispanics here who can start putting money in the collection basket.

- Liberalize on Divorce - attract back the ex-Catholics who left after their marriage broke-up and they did not desire a lifetime of celibacy (so they joined an Evangelical Church and began tithing there)

Love it or hate it, it’s pretty clear this is what they’re up to.

My mom hates this jerk. He’s cut from the same cloth as the Red Pope who appointed him, and Father Pfleger. I hadn’t heard that he’s gonna be named a Cardinal soon, though it was certain that would eventually happen.

It’s a shame Cardinal George couldn’t have been replaced by Pope Benedict.

Francis, Cupich, Schoenborn; wretched, faithless individuals.

Cupich is not the principal problem, though. That lies further up the chain of command.

>> I hadn’t heard that he’s gonna be named a Cardinal soon, though it was certain that would eventually happen. <<

Having that liberal douchebag Cupich in the college of Cardinals (where he will have a vote and influence on the election of the NEXT Pope) will indeed suck, but as you noted, him being elevated to Cardinal was bound to happen eventually. Every Archbishop of Chicago since 1937 has been elevated to Cardinal, so this is a non-story (if word came out that the Vatican had specifically decided Cupich would NEVER become a Cardinal, that would be a huge story and a break with precedent)

Some conspiracy theorists on the net were claiming Cupich is being "fast tracked" to Cardinal. Well, Francis George was named Archbishop of Chicago in '96 and elevated to Cardinal only a year later in '97. Cupich was named Archbishop in 2014 and is still not a Cardinal after three years. So if that's "fast track", I'd hate to see what "slow track" looks like.

Francis George was decent, but only because Cupich sucks so bad in comparison. The biggest problem with Francis George is he lacked the guts to do the right thing -- he a good guy but he was no Cardinal Burke, for comparison. Some conservative Catholics seem to be looking back on his era with rose-colored glasses... one freeper insisted Archbishop Cupich is "pro-abortion" for allowing unrepentant pro-abortion politicians to receive Holy Communion. I noted the SAME policy had been in effect during George's tenure, and asked if he held George to the same standards and considered him "pro-abortion" for not refusing communion to Dick Durbin, Pat Quinn, etc. No response.

You're right. Sadly, Cupich will soon be elevated to cardinal and placed in the position of electing the successor to Francis.

The situation in the Church just keeps getting worse and worse. My current survival strategy is to try as best I can to ignore Rome and the unsound bishops and focus on Jesus, Mary and the saints. Heaven help the Church to ride out this storm with teaching intact!

Francis Cardinal George had the near impossible task of cleaning up the absolute mess left by Joseph Cardinal Bernardin, he of "seamless garment" fame which certainly did not include sexual normality in Bernardin's twisted excuse for a mind. Bernardin specified in his will that the music at his funeral be provided by thw Windy City Gay Men's Chorus. He died of Kaposi's Sarcoma. Google it. Connect the dots. The late Fr. Malachi Martin had a LOT worse to say about him in his last novel Windswept House.

No archdiocese in the United States was in as pathetic shape as Bernardin's Chicago. It had a "Priests' Senate of antiCatholic leftist priests, a sort of Marxist/Paganism NOW group who purported to make policy for the archdiocese and yet, in our sorry age, none were burned at the stake or even de-frocked or excommunicated or taken out behind the woodshed to be spanked or even criticized by Bernardin. It took 18 years for Francis Cardinal George, a first rate intellect and a first rate Catholic to silence these revolutionary elements. George fulfilled his prediction that he would die in his bed. Now it is up to Cupich to fulfill the second part of the prediction and die in prison. Sounds like a plan! And Cupich's successor to die a martyr.

By tradition, Cupich had to wait to be appointed cardinal until George reached the age of 80 or died first.

Cupich, as Bishop of Spokane, Washington, actually threatened to discipline diocesan priests participating in Forty Days for Life, an effective interdenominational protest against abortion. No pro-life literature was allowed in any church in his diocese without his personal permission, which was seldom or never given. In economics, he seems to be a Marxist enthusiast. If he is to die in prison, the presumably the USA will have gotten a new lease on life.

Certainly Little Dick Durbin and Pat Quinn should NEVER receive communion until they repent their evil as publicly as they have performed it. Ditto each and every "catholic" politician of either party or public figure who supports baby slaughter. Cardinal George was not perfect but he was a LOT more perfect than Cupich, Wuerl, McPhony, Tobin and likely anything else appointed by Frankie.

When, at long last, we have a CATHOLIC pope again, he can re-assign Cupich to a newly created curial congregation charged with him personally attending to replenishing the toilet paper supply in Vatican public rest rooms for the rest of his misbegotten career. Then Chicago being vacant again, a CATHOLIC may be appointed to clean Cupich's mess and restore Catholicism to the Windy City. This miscreant must submit his resignation no later than 3/19/24. A Catholic pope will accept it before it is mailed.

I’m Catholic; been to The Vatican 3-4,times. A truly moving experience.

I’d like to know the real reason Benedict “retired”.

>> I’d like to know the real reason Benedict “retired”. <<

I would as well.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but the fact remains that only about 4-5 Popes had resigned in the 2000 years before Benedict, NONE had done so due to advanced age or illness (it is simply NOT done in the Catholic Church...the post is considered a lifetime job regardless of what shape the office holder is in, and the Catholic Church does NOT break with tradition lightly), and the most recent resignation before Benedict had been a necessity 600 years earlier to end a schism crisis in the Catholic Church with three men claiming the office of Pope.

Numerous fellow Catholics swore up and down back in 2013 that Benedict MUST be gravely ill and would drop dead ANY DAY NOW, and that I was an "idiot" for not seeing the "evidence" of this. Since he's alive and well 3 years later, none of them have apologized for bashing me for questioning the "he's secretly DYING!" argument.
