Rejoicing in Your Inheritance

"In this you greatly rejoice" (1 Pet. 1:6).

Contemplating your eternal inheritance should give you joy that transcends any temporal circumstance.

Joy is a major theme in Scripture. The psalmist said, "Sing for joy in the Lord, O you righteous ones; praise is becoming to the upright" (Ps. 33:1); "My lips will shout for joy when I sing praises to Thee; and my soul, which Thou hast redeemed" (Ps. 71:23).

Even creation itself is said to rejoice in the Lord: "Thou dost make the dawn and the sunset shout for joy. . . . Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all it contains; let the field exalt, and all that is in it. Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy before the Lord. . . . Let the mountains sing together for joy before the Lord; for He is coming to judge the earth" (Ps. 65:8; 96:11-13; 98:8-9).

Joy is the special privilege of every believer, regardless of his or her circumstances. You might suffer untold heartache and persecution for your faith in Christ, but amid the severest trials, God wants you to know profound joy. That's why Peter said, "To the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing; so that also at the revelation of His glory, you may rejoice with exultation" (1 Pet. 4:13).

First Peter 1:6-9 identifies five elements of your Christian life that should bring you joy amid trials. The first is your protected inheritance. That's what Peter referred to when he said, "In this you greatly rejoice" (v. 6, emphasis added). Other elements include a proven faith, a promised honor, a personal fellowship, and a present deliverance (vv. 6-9), which we will explore in coming days.

The Greek word translated "greatly rejoice" in 1 Peter 1:6 is not the usual Greek word for "rejoice." Peter used a more expressive and intense word, which speaks of one who is happy in a profound spiritual sense rather than a temporal or circumstantial sense. That's the quality of joy God grants to those who trust in Him and look beyond their temporal trials to the glory of their eternal inheritance. Let that be your focus as well.

Suggestions for Prayer

Thank God for the joy that transcends circumstances.

For Further Study

Read John 16:16-22.

According to Jesus, why would the disciples lament? What would bring them joy? What does their experience teach you about the basis for your joy as a Christian?

Please forgive me. I have not followed these threads before. Am I missing something in this message or is that sarcasm?

Again, a real and honest question, not an attack.

It’s kind of sarcasm. Some people try to tell us that we can’t possibly know for sure where we will spend eternity, to which I say, hogwash. We can ABSOLUTELY know where we are going.

1 John 5;13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

I agree. I have found that the people who rail against knowing your ultimate destination usually want you as a faithful tither in their church. To keep you saved.

You are correct sir. I was from Grand Forks, but I couldn't imagine being in the Air Force there. Greetings from the Philippines. 😀

We have been told in the past by certain to remain unnamed FReepers, that a Christian cannot have assurance of their salvation. That nobody can know if they were right until they died and got that and found out if they were saved or not.

To have assurance of salvation is what they call the *sin of presumption*.

This is the problem with Islam. There is no assurance of eternal life except if you are a martyr. How one dies is important for eternal life, not how one lives........

They may be unnamed; but they carry the banner of Catholicism...

We can ABSOLUTELY know where we are going.

Not disagreeing with you but how do you reconcile these folks? They are pretty confident even to the point of arguing with Jesus.

Mat 7:22 Many will say to Me in that day, Lord! Lord! Did we not prophesy in Your name, and through Your name throw out demons, and through Your name do many wonderful works?

My point is there is false assurance of salvation and true assurance of salvation. We should not tread too lightly over the issue and should do much deep pondering and reading of Gods word........................

sin of presumption

Chasing the rabbit hole on this, found the following which is worthy of contemplation for ALL:

http://www.insearchoftruth.org/articles/sin_of_presumption.html

Conclusion

The true worshiper of God will not presume upon God or His revelation, because of the following reasons:
•Admiration and respect for God’s wisdom, knowledge, foresight, purity, holiness - infinitely beyond our own.
•God’s desire for us not to add to His Word, take away from it, or wander to the right or to the left.
•God’s will for us not to go beyond what He has revealed in our actions or thoughts.
•God’s care in revealing and preserving His Word.
•The unalterable nature of God’s Word.
•God’s revealed plan for us to be able to read and understand His will through His Word.
•God’s intent and the approved examples of Jesus, His apostles, and His prophets relying upon the precise language of Scripture to prove critical doctrines.

Regardless of which covenant you study, Old or New, God expects us to respect His Word and abide by it unchanged. We are not to add to it or take away from it, turning neither to the right hand or to the left, either in practice or thought. We are do what the Bible says, no more and no less. Our willingness to add to or take away from God’s commands is an expression of our irreverence for God. Thereby, both the overly-restrictive and the libertine are reprimanded and curbed by a reluctance to presume upon God or His Word. If God had demonstrated or explicitly revealed an ambivalence toward interpreting His Word, then a loose interpretation of His Word might be justified. However, He has repeatedly and clearly stated the immutability of His Word and the importance of adhering to it strictly. It’s no wonder that one of the chief characteristics of the damning and damnable false teacher are his presumptuous words:

...to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment, and especially those who walk according to the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise authority. They are presumptuous, self-willed. ... These, like natural brute beasts made to be caught and destroyed, speak evil of the things they do not understand, and will utterly perish in their own corruption, and will receive the wages of unrighteousness, as those who count it pleasure to carouse in the daytime. They are spots and blemishes, carousing in their own deceptions while they feast with you, having eyes full of adultery and that cannot cease from sin, enticing unstable souls. They have a heart trained in covetous practices, and are accursed children. They have forsaken the right way and gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness. ... For when they speak great swelling words of emptiness, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through lewdness, the ones who have actually escaped from those who live in error. While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage. (II Peter 2:9-19 NKJ)

Obviously, the attitude and disposition of presumption can lead one to commit great and heinous sins, as seen in the eyes of God:

Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins; Let them not have dominion over me. Then I shall be blameless, And I shall be innocent of great transgression. (Psalm 19:13 NKJ)

Therefore, like the Psalmist, let us make it our aim and prayer to avoid presumptuous sins, realizing that presumption in interpretation of God’s Word is a direct reflection on our lack of respect for its Author. Furthermore, let us make it our aim to speak only where God has spoken - no more and no less:

If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. (I Peter 4:11 NKJ)

Is it presumption at the heart of it when a Catholic works hard to keep the sacraments believing he/she can earn salvation by fidelity to the catholiciism church dictates and authority? ... Well yes, it is precisely presumptuousness.

Is it presumptuous to believe wearing a Brown Scalpula will enlist the mother of Jesus to keep the wearer out of purgatory upon death? well, yes, it is precisely presumptuousness.

Am I being presumptuous when I state categorically that my salvation is assured in The Christ in Whom I faithe (action word) because I am resting upon the PROMISE OF GOD. Well ... yes that too is presumptuousness. But I ask Catholics who may read this entry, which presumption is the most sure? ... Only the Promise of God is without variance, for in Him is no shadow of turning.

They based their assurance on what they did, their works.

They thought that was enough and appealed to them.

But works will NEVER get one into heaven, even ones that seem miraculous. The enemy can counterfeit miraculous type works.
