Who smiles like this near the moment of death?

Death is a tragedy for mortal man, and yet with faith in eternity and anticipation of the embrace of our heavenly Father, death becomes radiant.

We share today the news of the death of Sister Cecilia, a Carmelite of Santa Fe in Argentina, who suffered from lung cancer. She astonished those who surrounded her in her agony, [smiling as she approached her culmination.]

The Carmel of Santa Fe announced the death of Sister Cecilia to their brothers and sisters and friends of the Carmel, with a brief but profound note.

Dear brothers, sisters and friends:

Jesus! Just a few lines to let you know that our very dear little sister has softly fallen asleep in the Lord, after an extremely painful illness, which she always endured with joy and surrender to her Divine Spouse. We send you all of our affection, thankful for your support and prayer during this time that is so sorrowful and yet also so marvelous. We believe that she flew directly to heaven, but all the same, we ask that you do not fail to pray for her. From heaven, she will reward you.

A warm embrace from your sisters of Santa Fe.

Later in the article, they say the photo was actually not taken at the point of her death, and the author apologizes.
Even still, cancer is a terrible disease which effects anyone, regardless of age. I suspect this nun had certain good days and others that were close to unbearable.

I’m glad for her sake that her suffering is over, and she has been received by The Father. It’s not easy for any very sick person to smile at all. Thankfully, she made the effort to celebrate a moment of peace, however brief. I don’t see fully habitted nuns like this very much anymore. I’m guessing this occurred long ago, or in Europe.

I do not comprehend why so many people have this inordinate fear of death. If you are in serious pain look forward to your death and the relief from pain. If you are not in pain and are dying because your organs have ceased to function then look forward to meeting your Savior.

I think the first words are the author’s problem, “Death is a tragedy for mortal man”.

Yes when I had a fear mindset, I saw death as a tragedy. As I grew deeper in faith in God and His Son Jesus, I have no fear of death though i am glad for each day He has me alive for His purposes between now and then. If God allows me to know when my time is coming, I’ll likely smile as i go.

mortal death allows us to go be with Jesus, it’s never a tragedy, unless one has not accepted Jesus as Savior and Lord.

I had a childhood friend who some years ago cancer depleted her body and I’m told by her husband that in her last 20 minutes or so she came out of a sleep she was in for a few days, she was able to have peaceful smiles and time with her young children and then he was with her as she passed and she was not only peaceful and smiling but actually raised her head from the pillow and smiled bigger in her last moments. What a blessing, God is so good!

I feel much the same way about it. I knew a woman, a young, beautiful woman with a loving husband and two pre-teen children who got a metastatic cancer of unknown origin and it ravaged her terribly.

As she approached death, she said “I don’t want to go.”

And her friend, looking at her racked and ravaged body said, “I know. But you can’t stay.”

She knew it was true.

The face of sweet peace.

Yeah, it wasn't because of the morphine they were pumping into her body that she was smiling.

Regards,

Having been in excruciating pain, I can attest to the wonder of morphine.

I am sure I made that face.
