Pope's Comments on Modern Marriage Raise Storm of Criticism

Pope Francis has said the "great majority" of Catholic marriages being celebrated today are invalid because couples do not fully realize it is a lifetime commitment, drawing sharp criticism from Church conservatives.

The pope, who has come under fire before for making spontaneous comments about doctrinal matters, was speaking at a question-and-answer session with priests, nuns and parish workers on Thursday night in a Rome basilica.

"We are living in a provisional culture," Francis said in response to a man who spoke of "the crisis of marriage" and asked how the Church could better prepare young couples.

"Because of this, a great majority of our sacramental marriages are null because they (the couple) say 'yes, for the rest of my life' but they don't know what they are saying because they have a different culture," Francis said.

In the Vatican's transcript issued on Friday morning his words were changed to read "some" instead of "a great majority". A Vatican spokesman said the pope's off-the-cuff remarks are sometimes edited after consulting with him or among aides.

Critics appeared to take the pope's words as a suggestion that most Catholics do not take their marriage vows seriously.

Ross Douthat, the conservative Catholic writer and New York Times columnist, said in one of his some 20 tweets on the subject that Francis had made "an extraordinary, irresponsible and ridiculous claim".

Matthew Schmitz, editor at the conservative First Things Catholic magazine, called the pope "wrong and irresponsible".

I’m not paying any more attention to this fake Pope.
He has outed himself as a fraud.
Pope Fraud.

Sounds like our Catholic friends have a real Marxist as Pope. (As I remember Marx postulated the end of the family.)

There is nothing Pope-like or Holy about this guy. He is a leftist, anti-pope. He is cast from the same mold as obama in that he is fundamentally transforming the Catholic religion. If I were Catholic I’d be petitioning the College of Cardinals to remove him and/or do an exorcism.

For once I actually agree with him. Family Law is out of control.

The longer this Third World pope remains the head of the Catholic church, the less credibility and influence the church’s teaching and pronouncements will have, especially among non-Catholics.

Anyone know what % of Catholic marriages end in divorce? They are in his sights, right?

Even when he is right, he is wrong.

Underlying his proposition is situational ethics, not absolute law.

Many young people who wed - of any era - do not really understand the implications of their vows. Yet the vow stands.

Does a failure to understand the oath in court invalidate one’s testimony? No.

When he appeared, all I needed to know was: A) A Jesuit; B) From Argentina; C) Chose Francis: A + B + C = Marxist.

You could have stopped at “1. a Jesuit.” I was taught by Jesuits in high school. Perdictablly bad.

The Church and its teachings show that HE has no credibility, not the other way around.

He’s right, isn’t he? At least for any culture with easy civil divorce and remarriage or civil ‘gay marriage and Catholics who have accepted those things, I suppose. He just doesn’t blame the scandal of bishop’s lack of teaching and discipline like he should.

But as long as he's the Holy Father and the primary spokesman, the church will be losing some credibility just as the US has lost credibility with Obama as its chief executive and spokesman.

You have a valid point. But just like when Obama makes anti-Israeli moves we always say it’s him not the people that’s what the Catholic people, the church, are trying to say. It’s not us who believes this garbage, it’s him. And we’re about as hopeful of getting him out of office as we’ve all been about Obama, zilch.

Unfortunately we have had non-Catholic real Marxists pretending to be but not actually the pope since 1958.

A glaring example is the Marxist decree of Roncalli from 1962, Pacem In Terris.

Agreed - but why it is now up to the laity.

Also what Catholics can do about it. This linked comment and the ones that follow.
