Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
Character Studies From The Bible
Paul
(Paul's First Letter to The Corinthians)
8 Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that "We all possess knowledge." But knowledge puffs up while love builds up. 2 Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know. 3 But whoever loves God is known by God.[a]
4 So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that "An idol is nothing at all in the world" and that "There is no God but one." 5 For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many "gods" and many "lords"), 6 yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.
7 But not everyone possesses this knowledge. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat sacrificial food they think of it as having been sacrificed to a god, and since their conscience is weak, it is defiled. 8 But food does not bring us near to God; we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do.
9 Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block to the weak. 10 For if someone with a weak conscience sees you, with all your knowledge, eating in an idol's temple, won't that person be emboldened to eat what is sacrificed to idols? 11 So this weak brother or sister, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge. 12 When you sin against them in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. 13 Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother or sister to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause them to fall.
Footnotes:
1. 1 Corinthians 8:3 An early manuscript and another ancient witness think they have knowledge do not yet know as they ought to know. 3Â But whoever loves truly knows.
(1 Corinthians 8)

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
I really like exotic food. One of my favorites in Indian Cuisine. Most Indian Restaurants are run by Hindu People, and there is usually a shrine to one of their gods in the restaurant with little food offerings in front of it. Thai Restaurants often have something similar with a little Buddha statuette. Early in my Christian life, I found this troubling, but having read this chapter in 1st Corinthians, I just "let it go" and enjoyed my food, as long as it didn't make another believer "stumble".
However, in recent years, there has been a new development. Many Indian, Middle-Eastern, Greek, and other Asian Restaurants are now sporting placards saying that their meat is "Halal". While this would be acceptable to me in a restaurant owned and operated by Muslims, it does not make sense to me in restaurants run by Christians, Hindus, or Buddhists, whom have been subjugated and persecuted by this same group. In fact, that placard makes ME stumble, and I avoid such restaurants. I asked an Indian Christian friend of mine what that was all about, and she said that, at least in the Indian Restaurants, it was to attract people from Bangladesh, who share all the same culture as the Hindus except religion. "But, of course," she said, "We are not bound by such things."
I agreed. But I still found somewhere else to eat my curried chicken!

Numbers 6: 23 Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, This is the way you shall bless the Israelites. Say to them: The Lord bless you, and keep you [protect you, sustain you, and guard you]; The Lord make His face shine upon you [with favor], And be gracious to you [surrounding you with lovingkindness];The Lord lift up His countenance (face) upon you [with divine approval],And give you peace [a tranquil heart and life]. 27 So Aaron and his sons shall put My name upon the children of Israel, and I will bless them.
And this we do and proclaim and agree in Jesus name. Amen.
