Moses anticipated that he would be asked, by the children of Israel, ‘…what is the name of the God of our Fathers?’ God had already revealed himself in Genesis 15 to Abraham in the same name, “Jahawehâ€.
The Hebrews had no doubt fell into apostasy and even idolatry in their long sojourn in the furnace of affliction that was Egypt, but the memory of Genesis 15 and of Abraham,Isaac and Jacob had not vanished.
What the people would be asking in the question “what is His name?’, was ‘what is the nature of this God who you say would deliver us?’.By what kind of operations of power and glory will this God’s name express itself. Kiel and Delitsch are instructive on this point,
The question, “What is His name?†presupposed that the name expressed the nature and operations of God, and that God would manifest in deeds the nature expressed in His name. God therefore told him His name, or, to speak more correctly, He explained the name יהוה, by which He had made Himself known to Abraham at the making of the covenant (Genesis 15:7), in this way, ××”×™×” ×ש×ר ××”×™×”, “I am that I am,†and designated Himself by this name as the absolute God of the fathers, acting with unfettered liberty and self-dependence.(Kiel and Delitsch Commentary on Exodus 3)
The name , eyeh, is a revelation of the absolute self existence of God. All of creation exists in a finite, dependent and derived form. You and I need air, water, food, rest, love, encouragement etc to keep on existing. Should any of those supports be cut off, we would cease to exist. Even the earth and the heavens have a dependent existence, moment by moment and day by day, all things are held together in Him, who created and sustains all things.
But God exists in a completely unique way. He needs nothing or no-one, He was not created, and will never go out of existence, he not only has existence, HE is existence! He is infinite, eternal, self sustaining,and unchanging.
In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. Like clothing you will change them and they will be discarded. But you remain the same, and your years will never end.(Psalm 102:25-27)
Jesus told us in John 5, “The Father has Life in Himselfâ€. God is independent of everything He created. He needs nothing to live, he cannot not exist, he is the sustainer of everything else, but needs nothing to sustain himself.
Furthermore the name reveals that because he is pure existence, self existent and infinite, He cannot change. “I have been what I will and always will beâ€. God’s name has a sacred past,present and future dimension to it for His self existence transcends all time.
The name, by which he is to be remembered, that is the covenant name for God, Jahweh, (I am that I am) is a steady revelation of the Self Existent one’s power, glory and will.
We will see Him revealed variously as Jahweh Raphe, the LORD your healer, in Exodus 15, Jahweh Nissi, the LORD your banner, in Exodus 17, And Jahweh TSidkenu, the LORD your Righteousness in Jeremiah 23, Jehovah-Nissi – Banner – I Chronicles 29:11-13, Jehovah-Rohi – Shepherd – Psalm 23, Jehovah-Rophe – Healer – Isaiah 53:4,5 , Jehovah-Sabaoth – Lord of Hosts – I Sam 1:3 , Jehovah-Sel’i – Lord my Rock – Psalm 18:2, Jehovah-Shalom – Peace – Isaiah 9:6, Rom 8:31-35, Jehovah-Shammah – Present – Hebrews 13:5 Jehovah-Tsidkenu – Righteousness – I Cor 1:30, Jehovah-Tsori – Lord my Strength – Psalm 19:14, Jehovah-Yasha – Lord my Savior – Isaiah 49:26, Jehovah-‘Ez-Lami – Lord my Strength – Ps 28:7…What God is, is what God will ever do.
Without faith it is impossible to please God, for those who come to Him must believe that HE IS, and that HE IS a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.(Hebrews 11:6)
Exodus 3 is a pinnacle text, because the highest and most blessed Revelation given to the miracle nation, would be the Revelation of the name of God. Flesh and blood did not reveal this to Moses, but God, the Father in Heaven.
The Psalmist proclaims that,
The Lord reigns forever; he has established his throne for judgment. He rules the world in righteousness and judges the peoples with equity. The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.(Psalm 9:7-10)

Ezekiel, isn’t that why ‘shabbat’ (Sabbath),with the same ‘sh’ can be interpreted at some level as:

Tav is the 22nd letter of the Hebrew aleph bet and was detailed as a cross in the old paleo Hebrew times, correct?
It brings new understanding of why Israel had their first ‘shabbat’(Sabbath) on the 22nd day of His 2nd month and why each of the Father’s months in His Calendar keep that pattern. Right up to the ‘8th’ and final day, a ‘S abba th’,for the Feast of Tabernacles, the 22nd day.
And why His Sabbath, as a ‘sign’ or ‘mark’ has His Seal (name,title,territory)in that Commandment on the tablets of the Covenant.
And then we can get into times and laws changing and how it messes with exactly what Israel was being taught- How to commemorate His Creative and Redemptive Work- past,present and future.
Given the pattern of the Father’s calendar in Scripture-
The Father finished work on the 7th for Creation.
The Son finished work on the 14th for Redemption.
The Holy Spirit will finish work on the 21st for the ingathering.
All leading into a Shabbat/Sabbath rest on the 8th,15th and 22nd days of the Father’s prophetic month. All ends with a ‘cross’ or a ‘mark’,a Tav. A sign. He is the Aleph and the Tav, the beginning and the End. And He gives us rest.
Amazing how one little verse in ‘your book’ :),Ezekiel 46:1, can explain that pattern that gives believers in the Resurrected Son, a deeper meaning to what Israel was being taught, even if they didn’t (or don’t) fully understand it yet.

Moses is the mirror image of Hashem. That is to say, Moses - mem shin hei - is the mirror of Hashem - hei shin mem.

As for Ezekiel 46:1, it is so subtle that it can be missed-
He gives different directions for His ‘new moon days’ than for His 6 work days. So, by logic, His ‘new Moon day’ isn’t one of His 6 work days. But neither is His ‘New Moon Day’ the weekly Sabbath..
His basic calendar template, according to that one verse is:
1 new moon day (1st day of month)
6 work days (days 2-7 of month)
1 Sabbath (day 8 of month)
The world does not count the New Moon Day. And because they don’t separate those days from His 6 work days or His Sabbath, they miss an awesome Truth of what came before His 1st day of Creation..and what can be commemorated each ‘New Moon Day’-
The answer?
His Son. The Aleph and the Tav,which I believe I read once where those specific letters are located (but unpronounced and not translated into our bibles) in the ancient Hebrew Scriptures in places like Genesis 1:1.
Which is why when He showed me the Son was born on a specific ‘New Moon Day’ on His Calendar, when the Su ‘clothed the woman, and the moon was under her feet(Revelation 12:1), things started falling into place that befits the ‘Word made Flesh’!
That sign sits normally on the 1st day of the 7th(normal years like 2014- September 26) or the 8th month(extra month added in the luni-solar calendar in 2015- October 14)
A couple thousand years ago,that sign would sit on the 1st day of His 6th month (normal years) or the 1st day of the 7th month(extra month added in the luni-solar calendar)
It is exactly why Jewish boys were to be circumcised on the ‘8th’ day.
The Word Made Flesh was born on a New Moon Day (1st day of the 6th month) and circumcised on the 8th day of the 6th month, which is also an appointed Day- the weekly Sabbath 8th day of His month, but also the 7th Day of His Work week.
And the ‘hits’ of all the other appointed times fall right into place with His presentation in the temple (40 days from birth)- presented in the temple on the 10th day of the 7th month- Yom Kippur- Day of Atonement- 40 days from His birth.
His baptism, His laying His life down as the Lamb (14th Passover-6th and final work day), His resting in the tomb on the High Sabbath(15th- -Unleavened Bread), resurrection on the Day after the Sabbath (16th-1st work day-first Fruits)
And the giving of the Holy Spirit on the Feast of Weeks(with the Father’s calendar it will always fall on the 29th Day if the 4th month( a weekly 7th day SabbaTh)
All days He taught Israel- moeds- New Moon,Sabbaths, Feasts.
Not exactly how Judaism observes them, which is why Christianity needs to see this first. They know the Son but can know and teach Judaism where they are blinded- but frankly, Christianity will have to admit to following traditions of men too.
The world can know all of it.Jew, Gentile, one.
But without 1+6+1 like in Ezekiel 46:1, no one will be able to see it.
6+1, like the world counts, is short one day each month. And I didn’t see it until I asked Him what is a ‘New Moon Day’ if it isn’t one of His 6 work days or His Sabbath- the Answer is profound.
And it sets up exactly how He envisions His Kingdom to operate. All pointing to Him.
