The doors of Vietnam's first Catholic university under communist rule could open as soon as May.
Archbishop Paul Bui Van Doc of Ho Chi Minh City told ucanews.com that the government recently granted permission for the nascent institution.
"The relationship between the Vatican and the Vietnam government is becoming better and better, so we asked and they accepted," he said.
Approximately 100 students will begin studying philosophy and theology this year in a few rooms allotted in the bishops' conference headquarters.
"After that, in the future, maybe a lot," he said. "It's possible a thousand or more than a thousand" students will eventually join the university, predicted Archbishop Doc, who said the school would eventually offer a diverse course load.
The Vatican Insider reported that the school will offer bachelor's degrees, licenses and doctorates and will eventually offer courses in psychology, sciences, canon law, among others, and that the university's structure and statutes had also received approval from both the government and Vatican.
While the Catholic Church operated schools from kindergarten through to university level before 1975, it has had little freedom in the education sector since the advent of communism.
When the Communists came to power in the North, nearly a million Catholics fled south where the Catholic president allowed Christianity to flourish. After the fall of Saigon, however, such freedoms came to a crashing halt. As with other religions, church properties were confiscated and their powers severely curtailed.

unfortunately.
that comment about getting the Heaven if you follow your conscience was STRANGE, to say the least.
like I said, I think hitler followed his conscience and that didn’t turn out too well at all.
there’s no sense in the statement.
Catholic? Or “catholic”?
Sounds like "Do what thou whilst shall be the whole of the law."
yeah, that’s bad.
is that a line from the bible?
No, it’s Wiccan.
Yes....The SATANIC Bible.
“the Pope’s political views”
I live in Orange County, CA, there are a lot of Vietnamese immigrants, and American born Vietnamese. The story I hear, continuously, for the last ten years has been that Vietnam never experienced a diaspora, like that which occurred after “the communists came” (i.e. 1975). Word got back that the same people, living overseas, in freedom, prospered, while those that remained behind, suffered in abject poverty.
The screws have been loosened, across the board, economically; Vietnam is a large exporter of rice, and the per capita income has risen, dramatically. This relative freedom has resulted in some level of reform, in many other areas. While I am sure the current Pontiff has an appeal to hard core communists, the news I am hearing out of VN is very encouraging. The American style of life was setback, to be sure, but the average Ho realizes that they never had it better, than the Republic of VN, while Uncle Sam was their benefactor.
Thank you.
Vietnam is coming full circle.
I wish nothing but the best for the Christians of that country.
and I hope the screws are loosening.
communism is a failed prospect. can never succeed. God didn’t build us that way
Amen !
It seems to me to be a positive move in a country that is both loosening up on human rights abuses, economic policies and who is no friend of China. There is a lot wrong and the country is brutal with its own people who question the central government. Take improvements where you find them. The government can’t finally control Catholics as has been seen in China. Vietnam has a strong independent Catholic tradition.
Will they have taxpayer subsidized condoms?
now to get the CIA to drop leaflets saying the Virgin Mary has fled south.
Does that come before or after the Vietnamese government
cracks down hard on Buddhist monasteries?
:)
Interesting things related to me by my best friend. He just came back from a cruise which included Vietnam.
He put to rest his 46 year old demons.
He said everything is dirt cheap.
He indicated that Japan is pouring a ton of money into the place.
They still don’t know how to drive and traffic signals are ignored.
Vietnam is a TPP partner.
The US has a trade deficit with Vietnam.
Looks like they won all over the place.
