Heisman Winner Derrick Henry: ‘Always Keep God First. Always Pray. Don’t be Afraid to Pray.’

In his speech accepting the Heisman Trophy on Saturday night, Alabama running back Derrick Henry said that he gets on his knees every night and prays and advised kids to keep God first, always pray, and know that God will hear their cry.

“I just want to talk to the kids that are looking and watching this TV today,” Henry said. “I just want to give you all advice. I am hoping I am someone you can idolize yourself behind and look up to because God is everything. Always keep God first. Always pray. Don’t be afraid to pray. He always hears your cry. If you have dreams, go chase them. If you believe it, you can achieve it. And God will be there every step of the way. I am a living testament, man. Growing up, having this dream, I am so nervous. I never thought I would be up here. But God is good. And I get on my knees every night and thank him for everything. So keep God first. Always pray. And always chase your dream.”

Guess this guy won’t get drafted by Denver. /sarc.

So far as God and athletes are concerned, but is it just me, or does it seem that the only ones with visibility actually speaking out are more athletes and fewer evangelists?

Is it just me, or are they the ones proclaiming simple faith while the theologians proclaim a gobbledygook of self help and self effort?

So, maybe in our day at least, God does care who wins a football game. Just wondering....

No, Denver will be drafting towards the end of the first round and Henry will be long gone by then.

And as long as Derrick Henry can play football at the pro level then regardless of what team drafts him then nobody will care how vocal he is about his faith.

Hopefully his upcoming loss to Michigan State won’t hurt his draft opportunities.

Andy Dalton playoff wins: 0

Tim Tebow playoff wins: 1

After the three consecutive losses, Broncos vice president and former quarterback John Elway said Tebow was playing tentatively and needed to “pull the trigger.”[115][116] On January 8, Denver hosted the Pittsburgh Steelers during the first round of the NFL playoffs. Tebow threw for a career high 316 yards and two touchdowns, including an 80-yard TD to Demaryius Thomas on the first play of overtime, as the Broncos won 29–23.[116] Tebow completed 10 of 21 passes in the contest, setting an NFL record for yards per completion in a playoff game at 31.6.[117] Media sources noted Tebow’s passing yards (316) and yards per completion (31.6) evoked the Bible’s John 3:16. The Nielsen ratings for the game also peaked at 31.6. John 3:16 was the top search item on Google the next morning, followed by Tebow and Tim Tebow.[118][119] The Broncos were then handed a 45–10 defeat by the New England Patriots the following week, knocking them out of the playoffs.[120] Tebow completed 9 of 26 passes for 136 yards and was sacked five times; he also rushed five times for thirteen yards.

Mark D’Antonio made his mark as a defense minded coach. We’ll see if they can stop Alabama. I think they will, but he used to coach in our city, so I’m biased.

Personally, I love what he said!

And, fwiw, I think he sounds like he listens to Osteen sermons and has taken them to heart and put faith and belief into action.

I have personally listened to an entire Osteen talk in which he did not say “Jesus” even once.

Derrick Henry seems sincere in his faith. Osteen is a phony.

Really? That's difficult for me to accept, but I won't argue with you. You know what you know.

I started listening to his sermons on sat. radio while driving around town and on those many road trips to/from Florida, plus I now also watch him on Sundays, too, so I now have a decent familiarity with what he says based upon lots of experience.

I'm not saying that you're mistaken, just that I have yet to hear what you've claimed.

I guess if that had been my only experience and I already had a built-in aversion to someone like Osteen or to him specifically, then perhaps I would say the same things you are saying.

As it is, what I've heard so far has been very helpful and valuable for improving and deepening my relationship with my Creator, Savior and His Holy Spirit and for not helping me to spot and not fall for Satan's tricks and traps.

I now am doing some of what Osteen says to do and have the results Osteen speaks of.

Whether he listens to Osteen or not, Derrick Henry is saying the things I hear Osteen say every sermon.

Obviously, ymmv, of course.

Without Jesus...

you “got” Nothing.

With Jesus, you have EVERYTHING !

John 14:23 Jesus replied, Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.

John 14:24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.

I don’t have a built-in aversion to Osteen. I have liked a number of his brief devotions that have been posted on the religion forum. However, the day I went to a sermon on TV to listen, Jesus wasn’t mentioned.

As a retired Army chaplain, and a current pastor who goes through the bible chapter by chapter, that stuck out for me. I don’t think I’m unnecessarily hard on anyone. Take that with a grain of salt if you will, because it’s me reporting on me, but being an Army chaplain means that you have to get along with a huge variety of religious people.

I do grit my teeth when I believe a speaker has made unfounded claims about a scripture they are explaining, or when they use a scripture as a launching pad to go off in their own direction.

Wow, did I ever screw that up correcting my sentence the first few times and then I posted the screw up!

I said: "for not helping me to spot and not fall for Satan's tricks and traps."

I guess Satan got me that time! Lol...I should have said: "for helping me to spot and not fall for Satan's tricks and traps."

Sorry about that one and for all the rest!

Sigh...no wonder my mom would send my letters home from school back to me with my grammar and spelling errors corrected in red ink.

Oh well...too bad it didn't take with me. Sorry, Mom...it's not your fault.

Denver drafted Tebow thinking he had the makings of an NFL-quality QB. They discovered they were wrong. There's nothing unusual in that; the history of the NFL is full of first round picks that were busts.

TV preachers, megachurches, a dime a dozen. No “faith” there.
