92-year-old Georgia woman kicked out of church for not tithing

BAINBRIDGE, GA (WATE) – A 92-year-old woman is no longer allowed to worship at the church where she was a member for more than 50 years because she was not tithing.

Josephine King said that was the reason she was kicked out of Bainbridge’s First African Baptist Church.

Her family members said they hope the situation will bring change to churches across the nation.

“Josephine King is no longer considered a member of the First African Baptist Church of Bainbridge, Georgia,” read Gerald Simmons, as he skimmed over the letter addressed to his aunt.

The letter, signed by Senior Pastor Derrick Mike, stated that Ms. King “has shown non-support” towards the church in the areas of “constant and consistent financial and physical participation.”

“She was stunned. She was disappointed. She was shocked,” said Simmons.

He said Ms. King was considered sick and a shut-in for several months, which was the reason for her lack of attendance.

He also said his aunt had gone above and beyond in the past to financially support the church.

What are they going to do if she shows up Sunday? Throw her out?

Many churches have levels of membership.

My guess is that Senior Pastor Derrick Mike is going to get a severe case of CBTBYITA.

That’s sick. The Pastor should be kicked out of the church ASAP. He’s a dirty dog.

There are a lot of churches who will let you worship with them in return for little more than a couple of quarters in the collection plate (more, if you feel like it). Go find one.

The pastor must need a new set of “dubs” for his ride.

My grandmother said she no longer felt welcome in her church when they began doing gimmicky things to bring in the youth.

How inclusive is the First African Baptist Church?

Christ didn't see one's color.

We had a somewhat aggressive approach to getting people removed from membership roles when I lived in Alaska. It had nothing to do with money gived, but with lack of attendance.

They had two issues. First, it was a very transient society, many members were in the military or related to oil business. Lots of families simply moved away without notifying the church. Secondly, the apportionment payment to national church (Methodist) were based upon membership roles. Essentially we were “charged” per member. If they were not attending church, we didn’t want the expense. Always multiple attempts to contact the folks first, but often they were not found and simply dropped.

I don’t think that was the case in this article.

I get that churches have bills to pay. But if they throw her out, I hope the rest of the congregation just gets up and leaves.

Yet Senior Pastor Derrick Mike’s church operates without rendering unto Caesar any taxes. Go figure.

“For sin shall not have dominion over you: for you are not under the law, but under grace.”—Romans 6:14

It seems this church is operating under the law and not grace.

Really pegged the "indignant" meter, I take it.

Christ didn't see one's color.

I hear you. But in the area I grew up in, we had the Italian church, the Polish church, etc.

True, the churches didn't have the nationalities in their names. But everyone knew, for example, that St. Joe's was the Italian church. The priest came from Italy, and some of the service was in Italian.

Nothing unusual in that. Birds of a feather flock together.
