Catholic school staffer in Montgomery County fired for her same-sex marriage [PA]

A staff member at a Catholic school in Montgomery County is without a job after she was fired for her same-sex marriage.

Margie Winters is a longtime educator, who never hid the fact that she married her partner in 2007.

"The first and primary thought is, 'How do we support Margie, because she is a beloved person in the community,'" said Maureen Kenney, parent.

Kenney's two daughters Moira and Siobhan have attended Waldron Mercy Academy since pre-school.

Winters is the religious education director. The school's principal did not renew her contract because of her sexual orientation.

Kenney is joining other angry parents on Wednesday night to discuss how to get Winters back on staff.

Kenney says Winters appreciated the support but told parents, "Whatever support is shown has to be merciful, that's the bedrock of this education."

The school's principal released a letter this week eluding to Winters' marriage to a woman as a conflict.

The letter said in part, "Our school recognizes the authority of the Archbishop of Philadelphia, especially in the teacher of religion to...to continue as a Catholic school, Waldron Mercy must comply with those teachings."

But on Wednesday, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia said Waldron is a private Catholic school and personnel decisions are made without the oversight of the Archdiocese.

State Senators Daylin Leach, a Montgomery County democrat and prime sponsor of the Pennsylvania Senate's Marriage Equality Bill, responded.

He said Waldron Academy receives state funding and that might override the religious exemption of the township ordinance.

"The ordinance says you cannot take state money and discriminate if you're a religious institution," said Leach.

According to the school's website, the school received $270,000 from the state's Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit Program.

Seventy students enrolled at the school also receive help from a state program.

?????

You have the director of religious education who can't be bothered to live her life per Catholic teaching? And has been that way for 7 years???

And parents are angry??? The only thing I'd be angry about is that she was in place, corrupting the minds of the students in her charge, for at least the past 7 years.

RE: [[[He [liberal state senator] said Waldron Academy receives state funding and that might override the religious exemption of the township ordinance.

The ordinance says you cannot take state money and discriminate if you’re a religious institution,” said Leach.

This is insane. Every religion discriminates in one way or another. By DEFINITION, every religion discriminates.

Also, government money/tax breaks are so pervasive, like water around a fish, that it is quite difficult to avoid getting aid from government This could kill most conservative Christian organizations — churches and quasi-churches.

That’s “yoke,” not “yolk.” The one is used in farming and haulage, the other is part of an egg.

The ordinance says you cannot take state money and discriminate if you’re a religious institution,” said Leach.

So where does discrimination based on a persons Religious belief fall into all this? Is government bigotry considered equality for all?
Where's the tolerance for anothers life style choice? Where's the inclusiveness? The diversity?

How can this Leach person get away with this kind of hate speech??? Why are people not rising up in disgust toward this Leah caracter? Where's the equality here?

That’s the intent.

Too bad there aren’t enough teaching nuns anymore. Catholic school was cheaper with the nuns.

I blame the bishops since Vatican II who have completely dropped the ball on proper catechesis of Catholics in the moral teachings of the faith.

"The ordinance says you cannot take state money and discriminate if you're a religious institution," said Leach...here we go - rally tonight of about 150 parents supporting the teacher and pushing the school to relent - so why are they sending their kids to a religious school when they don't support what the school professes to believe??? - anyhow - thanks Kennedy.......
