Why I'm a Catholic. Sola Scriptura isn't Workable, Part II
Apologia ^ | June 2015 | Ken Hensley

Posted on 06/13/2015 4:35:19 AM PDT by Mercat

As you may recall, when we left Martin Luther last week, he was bewailing and bemoaning the theological chaos that came about early on in the Reformation. There are as many sects and beliefs as there are heads. This fellow will have nothing to do with baptism; another denies the Sacrament; a third believes that there is another world between this and the Last Day. Some teach that Christ is not God; some say this, some say that. There is no rustic so rude but that, if he dreams or fancies anything, it must be the whisper of the Holy Spirit, and he himself a prophet. Apparently, even some of Luther's own students followed his courageous example of standing on "Scripture alone" against all human authority -- and rejected his teaching in favor of their own interpretations of the Bible. How many doctors have I made through preaching and writing! Now they say, “Be off with you! Go off with you! Go to the devil!” Thus it must be. When we preach they laugh…. When we get angry and threaten them, they mock us, snap their fingers at us and laugh in their sleeves (Facts, p. 207). Now Luther blamed the devil for the theological anarchy erupting all around him.

I have been promoting the fine television series “Wolf Hall,” available on Blu-ray now for only $23. It is a mirror reversal of “A Man for All Seasons” telling the famous story of Henry & Anne Boleyn from protestant Thomas Cromwell’s viewpoint. It gets deep into the woods of the Reformation and was very educational as well as marvelously entertaining.

I would not say that it was wildly anti-Catholic (I couldn’t bear to watch it if it was) but simply tells a different tale from a different point of view.

I enjoy educating myself on protestantism even though I disagree with it.

Where does it say Sola Scriptura in the Bible?

What Happened for the 1st 4 Centuries when there was no BIBLE?

What happens to the Illiterate who can’t read?

What happens when 80% of New testament transpires in Greek speaking territories and the Apostles quote Greek version of Old testament?

Of the 33576 Protestant sects in USA which one is the ONE TRUE sect representing the CHURCH?

Where is the book or article on “Why I left the Catholic Church”?

“Almost every day conservative Christians are told that if we don’t become more enlightened and progressive, we will become irrelevant to society as our numbers continue to decline.”

Roman Catholicism: When You Deny Sola Scriptura, You Have No Foundation
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dukd9WusmM&feature=player_embedded

From Dr. Alan Cairns—
Sola Scriptura: Defined, Denied, Defended - 1
http://www.sermonaudio.com/sermoninfo.asp?SID=102101135423

Sola Scriptura: The Deceit of Romish Tradition - 2
http://www.sermonaudio.com/sermoninfo.asp?SID=102801134754

Please consider the Gospel of Mark chapter 7. In many ways, the Catholic view of tradition is similar to what the Pharisees did in the first century, adding their oral teaching around the written Word of God. And in Mark chapter 7 beginning in verse 1 you see that, “The Pharisees and some of the scribes gathered around Him when they had come from Jerusalem, and had seen that some of His disciples were eating their bread with impure hands, that is, unwashed. For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they carefully wash their hands, thus observing the traditions of the elders.” Drop down to verse 5. “The Pharisees and the scribes asked Him, ‘Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with impure hands?’ And He said to them, ‘Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: ‘This people honors Me with their lips, but their heart is far away from Me. But in vain do they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men. Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men.” And look at verse 13. You invalidate “the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.” That condemnation of the Pharisees applies with equal force to the tradition of the Catholic Church today. Rome adds to the Word of God with her tradition. It contradicts and obscures the commandments of God, and it’s condemned. It is a falsehood.

I will leave you with Colossians chapter 2 verse 8. “See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ. For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form.” The truth of the matter is that the Bible judges tradition. It’s not that tradition judges the Bible. The Bible will not share its throne of authority with anyone or with anything.

These are all straw man fallacies, which have been repeatedly answered on FR - and likely many other forums. I suspect if you take some time to read and think, at least half would be clear to you.

Where does it say climate change in the Bible? Do we need to list the endless list of ungodly practices handed down from the mother church throughout history. It was these abuses that lead to Sola Scriptura.

He’s a Catholic because he has not received discernment, which comes from the Holy Spirit.

“So God wants his people unified. He doesn’t want his children “tossed here and there by waves, and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the cunning and craftiness of men.”

And to this end, he gave His Church pastors and teachers.”

(the above from article)

The church was nearest the source of truth during the first thirty years after the resurrection. And during this period, as the New Testament writers give witness to, there were pastors and teachers (church hierarchy) and these pastors and teachers (church hierarchy ) could not prevent the church, in some places, from going completely off the rails, showing, that there is no salvation in church hierarchy. Salvation comes, as Paul wrote, from faith and perseverance.

Where does it say Sola Scriptura in the Bible?

The apostles repeatedly say to read their letters and stick to what they said and wrote. The Bible is our only sure source of apostolic teaching. Any other other interpretation equates the apostles with the Roman Catholic Church which creates some very weird interpretations. My favorite is that the church is build upon the apostles, but if the church is equal to the apostles, then the church is built upon itself.

What Happened for the 1st 4 Centuries when there was no BIBLE?

What tripe! The apostles wrote letters. The churches shared letters. The apostles said to read the letters they sent to other churches. The Bible only includes letters that have been read in the churches from the beginning.

What happens to the Illiterate who can’t read?

They heard the scriptures in the church. Other people read to them. You don't have to be able to read the Bible yourself to be saved.

Of the 33576 Protestant sects in USA which one is the ONE TRUE sect representing the CHURCH?

What a misunderstanding! A sect is a smaller group with somewhat different beliefs than the larger group to which they belong. I like the term synod better; those who walk together in faith.

There is no ONE TRUE sect. While we all strive for correct doctrine, we all accept that our truth is not infallible. While we know we can make mistakes, we also accept that others can make mistakes as well. While we can choose to submit ourselves to the judgement of another so that we can maintain our synods, we understand that it is our duty to promote correct doctrine and question those who promote error.

A bit late with this, I know. But I’m recently watching Part 2 of “The Tudors” from a few years back (Part 3 to follow) and, while realizing that it takes a lot of historical liberties, I cannot but be struck with how much anguish this break with Rome is actually causing Henry. It definitely changed him - and yes, I believe historically too - into a different man.

How could it have done other?

Where does it say Sola Scriptura in the Bible?

Ps. 119:105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet., and a light unto my path.
Prov. 30:5,6 Every Word of God is pure; He is a shield unto them that put their trust in Him. Add thou not unto His Words lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.

Now you tell me where "Pope" is found in the Bible, or the church has the authority for an inquisition to murder and torture poor believers who believe different than Rome, or where priests can molest little children and their superiors try to conceal and move around the molester.

When catholics continue to repeat this many times debunked statistic it shows their ignorance of the topic.

Wow - I've never seen someone give a precise number before. Surely you can name them all, since you know the exact number!

Which is of course a faulty Papist logic.

There are all sorts of true churches that can be found across all denominations

“The Bible will not share its throne of authority with anyone or with anything.”

AMEN! That’s because its Author won’t. If we approach Scripture as what it is—God’s breathed-out Word—there is great satisfaction and affirmation. Man gets his hands on it and simply ruins it. Why do I need some man to stingily measure out a bit of God’s grace to me when I’ve been bid to “buy without cost” and “drink freely”?

Ha! Stuns me that supposedly freedom loving FReepers cherish their authoritarian super-structure churches. The Father makes it clear we are to grow up spiritually into Christ. So many churches infantilize the flock (though to be fair, the flock passively loves it).

Rahab didn’t neurotically wring her hands over committing treason against her own people, but instead went with God! Faith! She acted alone, just her before God, and was COMMENDED for it. You’d think if a harlot could do it so could we!

I love the wrenches God throws into our pathetic schemes to figure Him out. His path are beyond tracing out.
