We can also know the difference between true and false freedom through the natural law which is “written on the human heart.”
This is important, because this is the only way to present this idea to a secular society.
Men have the capacity to do good or evil. No one has a God-given right to do evil, since God is Goodness Itself.
Nevertheless, the State may justly TOLERATE evils if the effort to suppress them causes more evils than toleration.
It’s easy to see how this principle applies to public policy regarding drug laws, but it’s also the intellectual justification for religious tolerance. Religious tolerance is a civil right, not an absolute right. Can a tolerant regime tolerate an intolerant religion? (see Mohammedanism).
