Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Character Studies From The Bible

David

New International Version (NIV)

1 After the death of Saul, David returned from striking down the Amalekites and stayed in Ziklag two days. 2 On the third day a man arrived from Saul’s camp with his clothes torn and dust on his head. When he came to David, he fell to the ground to pay him honor.

3 “Where have you come from?” David asked him.

He answered, “I have escaped from the Israelite camp.”

4 “What happened?” David asked. “Tell me.”

“The men fled from the battle,” he replied. “Many of them fell and died. And Saul and his son Jonathan are dead.”

5 Then David said to the young man who brought him the report, “How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?”

6 “I happened to be on Mount Gilboa,” the young man said, “and there was Saul, leaning on his spear, with the chariots and their drivers in hot pursuit. 7 When he turned around and saw me, he called out to me, and I said, ‘What can I do?’

8 “He asked me, ‘Who are you?’

“‘An Amalekite,’ I answered.

9 “Then he said to me, ‘Stand here by me and kill me! I’m in the throes of death, but I’m still alive.’

10 “So I stood beside him and killed him, because I knew that after he had fallen he could not survive. And I took the crown that was on his head and the band on his arm and have brought them here to my lord.”

11 Then David and all the men with him took hold of their clothes and tore them. 12 They mourned and wept and fasted till evening for Saul and his son Jonathan, and for the army of the Lord and for the nation of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.

13 David said to the young man who brought him the report, “Where are you from?”

“I am the son of a foreigner, an Amalekite,” he answered.

14 David asked him, “Why weren’t you afraid to lift your hand to destroy the Lord’s anointed?”

15 Then David called one of his men and said, “Go, strike him down!” So he struck him down, and he died. 16 For David had said to him, “Your blood be on your own head. Your own mouth testified against you when you said, ‘I killed the Lord’s anointed.’”

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

In our studies of both Saul and Samuel, we have also learned a lot about David. We will pick up the story where David finds out that Saul and Jonathan are dead. Here is what we know so far about David:

This outline excerpted from:
http://www.bibleanswer.com/18_David.htm

FAMILY OF DAVID

1 Samuel 16
· Tribe of Judah, son of Jesse, youngest of eight sons (16:1-13)
· His physical appearance (16:12)
· From Bethlehem (16:1)
· Descendant of Boaz and Ruth (Ruth 4:17-22)
· Ancestor of Jesus the Christ (Matt. 1:1, 6; Rom. 1:3)

DAVID: THE SHEPHERD

1 Samuel 16; Psa. 23
· "The Lord is my shepherd" (16:11; Psa. 23)
· Solitude
-The harp, composer, developed physical strength & endurance, marksman
· Responding to God
-David's faith in God is developed: relationship, dependence, worship and praise
· Anointed by Samuel to become king (16:1-13)
· Inspired and strengthened by the Spirit of God (16:13)
· Brought to King Saul's court (16:14-23)

DAVID: THE HUNTED

1 Samuel 17-30
· "The Lord is my shield" (Psa. 28, 18)
· Struggle
-Against Goliath & the Philistines (victory of faith, 1 Sam. 17)
-Against Saul (endurance of faith, 1 Sam. 18-26)
-Against the Amalekites (the battle of faith, 1 Sam. 27) · Running from Saul (1 Sam. 18-26)
-His love for Jonathan, Saul's son (18:1; 20:14-17)
-His respect for king Saul as the Lord's anointed (24:1-22; 26:1-25)
-His marriage to Abigail (1 Sam. 25:2-44)

The messenger who brings Saul's head to David is in for a big surprise. According to the cultural norms of his "civilization", he expected to be rewarded for killing David's sworn enemy. He even embellished the tale a bit to make himself look like a big hero. David's response was totally unprecedented and alien to him.

David's response was unusual even from the viewpoint of his own People. This was nearly a thousand years before the Sermon on the Mount, or the admonition to "Love Your Enemies and pray for those who spitefully use you". Remember, though, that David is filled with the Spirit of God, and God is the SAME, yesterday, today, and forever. He changes not, and there is no shadow of turning with Him.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

In some ways this story reminds me of Ananias and Saphira in the New Testament, when they embellished - lied that they gave all to God and they didn’t. They were struck dead.

Amen, left that other site, for these studies

Lifting up Israel, our beloved America, as well as all God’s people.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

Above Right: " David Anointed King of Judah"

2 Samuel 1:8-10
Morgan Bible – Folio 36r (c. 1240)

_ OW it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had abode two days in Ziklag;

It came even to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did obeisance.
And David said unto him, From whence comest thou? And he said unto him, Out of the camp of Israel am I escaped.

And David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, That the people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.

And David said unto the young man that told him, How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son be dead?

And the young man that told him said, As I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned upon his spear; and, lo, the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him.

And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called unto me. And I answered, Here am I.

And he said unto me, Who art thou? And I answered him, I am an Amalekite.

He said unto me again, Stand, I pray thee, upon me, and slay me: for anguish is come upon me, because my life is yet whole in me.

So I stood upon him, and slew him, because I was sure that he could not live after that he was fallen: and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them hither unto my lord.

Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with him:

And they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of the LORD, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword.

And David said unto the young man that told him, Whence art thou? And he answered, I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite.

And David said unto him, How wast thou not afraid to stretch forth thine hand to destroy the LORD's anointed?

And David called one of the young men, and said, Go near, and fall upon him. And he smote him that he died.

And David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I have slain the LORD's anointed.
