Irish Association of Catholic Priests Takes Neutral Stance on Same-Sex Marriage

The organisation has urged priests not to tell their parishioners how they should vote

The Association of Catholic Priests has adopted a neutral position on the same-sex marriage referendum in Ireland and urged priests not to instruct their parishioners on how they should vote in May.

The group of priests, with a membership of about 1,000, issued a statement saying: “After a consultation with our members, the results of which indicated clearly a wide range of views, the Association of Catholic Priests has decided not to adopt a position in favour or against the marriage equality referendum.”

The statement added: “Sexual orientation does not debar anyone from God’s love. If as priests we are speaking on this matter, we need to remember that the use of intemperate language can cause deep hurt among gay people and their families, as well as doing further damage to an already ailing church.”

In other news, Peter at the Golden Gate took a neutral stance on the eternal fate of several clergy in The Association of Catholic Priests...

Would they take a neutral stance on adultery?

Wow! Priests who take a neutral position on morality. Thought I’d heard everything.

Yes, they have never called for adultery to be illegal.

Well, they don’t want to hurt “accounts receivable”.

I wonder what percentage of the Catholic priests in Ireland belong to this outfit. 1,000 may be a small fraction of all the priests.

It would be possible to take a clear stand in favor of Christian morality without using any "intemperate" language.

I wonder if they polled their members or if a small number of officers of the association made the decision to take this stance.

1000 priests ? Or a circulation of 1000 ? Tough for me to believe 1000 priests in Ireland hold that position. If such is the case we true members of the faith have a real problem.

Glenn Beck is loving this. He’s just revealed “thank God gays are not pariah’s anymore.”

God spits on these cowards, appeasers, and collaborators.

According to Wikipedia, there are 3700 Catholic priests in Ireland (diocesan and religious orders) and the Irish Assn of Catholic Priests “claims a membership of 800.”

I am reminded of the situation in the 18th century. Before the French Revolution, there was a virtual rebellion against the papacy. They wanted to reduce the pope to a figurehead like the Patriarch of Constantinople. They being the absolute monarchs and priest enamored with the scientism of the time.

Catholics believe that if a person divorces and civilly remarries, and the first marriage is presumed still valid (i.e. there was no finding of nullity on the first marriage) -- then the "second marriage" is actually ongoing adultery. It is an adulterous "second marriage."

I think there are some places where this would be illegal. To name two, the Philippines and the Vatican City, neither of which have legal divorce.
