Scriptures that promise an outpouring of God's Spirit
2/16/15 | Hiskid

Posted on 02/16/2015 8:22:19 AM PST by Hiskid

I would like to collect some scriptures for the purpose of prayer that promise God's outpouring. Can you help?

Here are some;

Let us pursue the knowledge of the Lord. His going forth is established as the morning; He will come to us like the rain, Like the latter and former rain to the earth. (Hosea 6:3)

Isaiah 64:1, 2: Oh, that You would rend the heavens! That You would come down! That the mountains might shake at Your presence— As fire burns brushwood, As fire causes water to boil— To make Your name known to Your adversaries, That the nations may tremble at Your presence!

Let fall in showers, you heavens, from above, and let the skies rain down righteousness [the pure, spiritual, heaven-born possibilities that have their foundation in the holy being of God]; let the earth open, and let them [skies and earth] sprout forth salvation, and let righteousness germinate and spring up [as plants do] together; I the Lord have created it. (Is. 45:8)

The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9

And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams. Acts 2:17

who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all, 1 Tim 2:4-6

“When the Lamb broke the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God, and because of the testimony which they had maintained; and they cried out with a loud voice, saying, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, will You refrain from judging and avenging our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” And there was given to each of them a white robe; and they were told that they should rest for a little while longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brethren who were to be killed even as they had been, would be completed also.” Revelation to John (6:9-11)

Peter in Acts 2:17 is quoting the prophet Joel (Joel 2:28). Add verse 29 as well.

I like Romans 8:14-17, in part “...ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father...”

Yes. As I read on in Romans 8, I noticed “Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”

Since His outpouring is His will, we can trust the Holy Spirit to pray through us for this.

the purpose of prayer that promise God's outpouring

Prayer is not for asking something of God. God answered that over 2,000 years ago. Prayer is for thanking God for all his provisions.

I am of course speaking of believers in the gospel like born again Christians who receive the gospel, as intended.

Ephesians 1:15-23 For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.

And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

Thank you, Faith. I should have been more clear. I am looking for scriptures to pray for the lost of a large area. HOWEVER, Luke 11 includes, “Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done...”which is perfect also. Luke 11 also is a promise of answered prayer AND a promise of the sending of the Holy Spirit. Also, the John 14 prayer for the Holy Spirit of Truth and the Helper would also be spot on. Jesus prayed it, so that certainly is our example, isn’t it?

You are such a source of wisdome for me. I thank my God at every remembrance of you.

So what you’re looking for then, is what the Holy Spirit work in our lives it to do for/in us.

More than just the obvious gifts of the Spirit.

Correct?

Gee, it makes perfect sense to me. How come you can’t read my mind!! (sarcastic, of course!) Actually, what I want is a scriptural way to pray for God to bring salvation to people—for example, our Nation or other Nations, members of ISIS, etc.

Yes, I know God has already provided eternal life for all who will receive, but “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day.” We are supposed to pray for laborers to enter the harvest, for those in authority so that they can come to the knowledge of the truth. Those prayers in Ephesians for the enlightening of the eyes of the understanding are great, but sometimes it looks like they’re specifically for believers.

I just want to be more fruitful in my prayers. He watches over His Word to perform it and says that we are to put Him in remembrance. That’s what I’m wanting to do. I know I also need to add more faith to my prayers, as well.

John 16:7-15 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

2 Corinthians 4:1-6 Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God's word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone's conscience in the sight of God. 3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. .

In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ

(In this case, I pray that the Holy Spirit would remove from their eyes the blindness that Satan has put there. It goes along with Him drawing all men to Jesus.)

1 Timothy 2:1-6 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

Acts 26:15-18 And I (Paul) said, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ And the Lord said, ‘I am Jesus whom you are persecuting. But rise and stand upon your feet, for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you as a servant and witness to the things in which you have seen me and to those in which I will appear to you, delivering you from your people and from the Gentiles—to whom I am sending you to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’

AMEN to all the SCRIPTURES. I have personally been been with this Scriptures, how I pray for an outcry to reach Heaven:

. . . how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? Luke 11:13

You are a gem!

I had forgotten about 2 Cor. It sort of goes along with Mark 3:27 “No one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. And then he will plunder his house.” We can bind the strong man and plunder his house!

In the middle of the night I was also reminded of Eph 2:8. At the end of the story, it is still ALWAYS by His grace we are saved through faith and that not of ourselves.

Thanks so much for the time you put into helping me.

You’re welcome.

It was a good thing for me to do as well, as I’ve often wondered about the best way to Scripturally pray for people.

And if we pray according to God’s word, we will KNOW that he hears us because we’ll know we’re praying according to His will

I had never thought of this scripture as one to be used for prayer, but I “see” it now, particularly in light of all the recent martyrs.

Thank you!
