Gloria.TV News ^ | 10/30/14

Posted on 11/02/2014 5:45:22 PM PST by ebb tide

Coming Wednesday Cardinal Raymond Burke was supposed to celebrate an old-rite Mass in the Vienna parish church of St. Leopold which belongs to the very rich monastery of Klosterneuburg. But the Mass was cancelled. The provost of Klosterneuburg, Father Bernhard Backovsky has personally forbidden the local pastor to allow the Cardinal to celebrate.

The lesson of Thrasybulus
Posted on by Fr. John Zuhlsdorf

As I contemplate certain things going on in the Church right now, I am reminded of Thrasybulus of Miletus.

The story of Thrasybulus is in Book V of Herodotus’ Histories.  A messenger from Periander, a 7th c. BC tyrant of Corinth, asks Thrasybulus, tyrant of Miletus, for advice on how to govern.   Thrasybulus doesn’t immediately respond.  Instead he leads the messenger into a field.  Then, drawing his sword,  he slashes the tallest ears of wheat off their stalks.  The message: eliminate potential threats to your absolute rule by preemptively cutting down any men who are prominent enough to raise a challenge.

If anyone sticks his head up, chop it off.

Eliminate excellence by all necessary means and with extreme prejudice.

An Abbot’s rule is absolute.

The parish church is monastery property.

Ja vell.

Aren't Provosts essentially of equal rank with bishops?

So much for that congeniality the post-V2 prelates love to tout.

As a cardinal, Cardinal Burke has faculties to say Mass whenever and wherever he chooses. The local bishop has no authority at all over him. The fact that he chose to respect the wishes of the local bishop shows what a classy guy he is, and the pettiness of those who resist the Extraordinary Form, no matter their position.

"As a cardinal, Cardinal Burke has faculties to say Mass whenever and wherever he chooses. "

I'm not sure this is true under Canon Law. The Bishop controls the faculties of priests in his diocese, and he can grant and suspend priestly faculties at will. The same goes for an Abbot.

As Cardinal, Burke is not necessarily this Abbot-Povost's ecclesiatical superior, on the Abbot's own territory.

Nevertheless, what this Abbot did was obnoxiously insulting. Burke has been singled out for public humiliation. THis --- and his equanimity, his refusal to lash out --- makes me think God is choosing him to be a great saint.

I still think Burke could be the next Pope.

Oremus.

No, Pope Francis could easily overrule the provost. But, as in other cases, he allows the persecution to continue. I think he's actually behind the persecution.

My copy of Canon Law is at work, and I wouldn’t count on my memory for details, but things do work differently for Bishops, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they were even more different for Cardinals.

Here's some further clarification from Rorate Caeli; at least Cardinal Burke has been welcomed in some less hostile environments in Vienna:

Any cardinal possesses faculties to celebrate the sacraments anywhere on earth, and presumably beyond. What Cardinal Burke does not possess is the right to celebrate at a place where he’s unwelcome. He was refused a venue, perhaps because pressure was applied to deny him access; so far as I can tell this has nothing to do with faculties.

We may not be privy to the specifics but we all know, ultimately, why His Eminence was denied "access."

Because spiteful ecclesiastic engineers (modernists, homosexuals, imposters, saboteurs and manipulators) are from hell and believe actions like this are fruitful to their cause.

Would it not be magnificent to witness another conclave in short order and to see Raymond Cardinal Burke step out onto the balcony, announce that he is taking the papal name Pius XIII or Leo XIV and order Walter Cardinal Kaspar and a half dozen like Kaspar arrested and jailed at Regina Coeli Prison.

St. John Paul the Great referenced Cardinal Burke as "My Little Raimundo" and sped his course up the hierarchichal ladder. God can facilitate his final earthly ascent. The progressives will be in complete panic over such an election.

Certainly, as pope, Burke would be the religious superior of all concerned and might well wish to invite the abbot ans Christoph Cardinal Schonbrun for a little conversation about manners and clerical ethics at the newly restored papal palace residence of Burke as Pius XIII or whatever, The discussion might take place right after the guests attend Papa Burke's daily Tridentine Mass at St. Peter's and just before that day's announcement of the retirement to cloister of Schonbrun and the abbot.

Cardinal Burke’s middle name is Leo. Pope Leo XIII knew the dangers of Modernism. Hence, the prayer to St. Michael. Cardinal Burke is following in the footsteps of a true Pope. One who respected the office and did his duty in protecting the faith.

The most magnificent part would be if he then issued his first papal decree to change the way the title Cardinal is used so they stop treating it like its a middle name. From that point on, he'll be ordering Cardinal Walter Kaspar, NOT "Walter Cardinal Kaspar".
