University announces it will comply with new state regulation

Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles is complying with a State of California mandate to include abortion in the medical services its insurance policy covers, Live Action News reported.

The decision came in the wake of a directive from the director of the state’s Department of Managed Healthcare, Michelle Rouillard.

Los Angeles Loyolan, the campus newspaper, reported on Saturday that LMU’s insurance will cover faculty and staff for elective abortions effective from August 22 to the end of the policy period.

“The news was confirmed in an email sent to faculty and staff yesterday. Vice President for Human Resources Rebecca Chandler confirmed that LMU’s insurance providers will now cover all procedures deemed medically necessary, including elective abortions,” the newspaper reported.

Then they no longer should be a Catholic University. Name it the University of political expedience or something.

LMU is run entirely as a for profit business.

It is a perfect example of why capitalism without morality is insufficient to guarantee a good political/economic outcome.

No matter what George Gilder said.

Unfortunately, none of the Jesuit Colleges are truly Catholic. The Jesuit Order is lost to the Church, probably for good.

Right. This is appalling. No, it's beyond appalling. It's sickening.

I'm not Catholic, so I have to ask. Who decides whether or not a university is Catholic? And can the title be revoked?

It seems to me (an outsider) that the Pope must act, and act swiftly, in matters such as these.

Will a Catholic FReeper please provide some details here?

Loyola Marymount campaigned for Loretta Sanchez against Bob Dornan thirty years ago. The nuns there have been pro-abortion since long before that.

Gomez is an affirmative-action non-entity.

LMU is run entirely as a for profit business.

Souvenir statuettes of Moloch will be sold in the campus bookstore. Available engraved with the date and sex of your murdered infant. DNA analysis identifying the father will be available for a nominal additional charge of only $69.95.

"Then they no longer should be a Catholic University."

I agree.

By requiring private organizations to comply with abortion mandate, California would otherwise be in violation of Section 1 of the 14th Amendment imo. Section 1 prohibits the states from making policy which unreasonably abridges constitutionally enumerated rights, the 1st Amendment right of religious expression in this case.

But Layola Marymount is showing by its actions that it is not a Catholic university. So 1st Amendment protections are not an issue here.

Just because a college was founded by Catholics doesn’t mean it remains faithful to Catholic teachings today. Such is the case with many of them, unfortunately.

I’ve heard that Notre Dame has done the same thing. As persecution increases, the chaff, the cultural Catholics, will fall away.

What I can’t understand is why the schools are surrendering after three smacksdowns of the HHS mandate at the Supreme Court and a 90% victory rate for the opponents of the HHS mandate in other courts?
