The Church of England (CofE) has called for an inquiry into assisted dying.
It follows a U-turn by former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Carey, who said he would back legislation to allow the terminally ill in England and Wales get help to end their lives.
The current Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby says the Assisted Dying Bill is "mistaken and dangerous".
But the Church said an inquiry would include expert opinion and carefully assess the arguments.
Speaking on behalf of the CofE, the Bishop of Carlisle, the Rt Rev James Newcome, said a Royal Commission would allow the "important issue" to be discussed at length.
He said the bill should be withdrawn to allow the inquiry to take place - a call which was immediately rejected by Lord Falconer, the Labour peer who tabled it.
Some 110 peers are already listed to speak when the House of Lords debates the private members bill on Friday.
Bishop Newcome also said the Church was "surprised" by Lord Carey's change in position, which had brought the issue to the public's attention.
Lord Carey wrote in the Daily Mail that he had dropped his opposition to the Assisted Dying Bill "in the face of the reality of needless suffering".
"The fact is that I have changed my mind. The old philosophical certainties have collapsed in the face of the reality of needless suffering."
He said it was the case of Tony Nicklinson, who had locked-in syndrome and died after being refused the legal right to die , who had had the "deepest influence" on his decision.
Lord Falconer's legislation would make it legal for adults in England and Wales to be given assistance ending their own life. It would apply to those with less than six months to live.

Can we assist the Church of England in its death?
If a so-called Christian denomination flirts with euthanasia, it cannot long remain Christian, and will wither on the vine.
Evil begets evil, even when it is disguised as good.
To the royal founder of the Church of England, “assisted dying” meant off with your head at the Tower.
Can’t kill something that is already dead.
When the churches become dens of iniquity then what?
If one wishes to die, Do it yourself
If you can’t, a next of kin can do it easily,
and without assistance, it is easy to kill a person
You will have to talk to God about it afterward however...
And you will have to live with yourself..
What these people want is to
corrupt the OATH and Fealty of a Physician,
who will be forever damaged by the event.
By forcing a Physician to be corrupted by this abomination.
The Hippocratic Oath is absolutely intolerant of
Assisted Death, by a Physician, as it is of Abortion
I cannot Kill a person,
and I cannot teach others to do the same

it would be better it I were never born...
How is Hospice care in this country, not assisted dying? I think every terminally ill person I know who has had hospice at their home, was administered higher & higher doses of morphine until they died.
Hmmm, INTERESTING question.
They LIKE it because it's a whole lot easier to be a "practicing" Protestant (that is, no nasty old confession and penance) than a practicing Catholic, with a PLETHORA of sins and beaucoup NO-CAN-DO stuff.
All they have to do is tell God: Sorry. I repent. And poof, all sin gone, no matter what the sin, how often the sin or with NO intention of no-repetition.
They can receive their "communion" with or without guilty conscience. JUST before they intake communion: SORRY, Lord. I repent. And POOF sins washed away PURE!
SOOO easy!
Those words are VERY important to remember.
