Havana, Cuba, Apr 17, 2014 / 03:06 pm (CNA).- After granting temporary permission for Cubans to celebrate Good Friday in 2012 and 2013, the Cuban government has decided grant a request made by Pope Benedict during his visit to the country in 2012 to make it a permanent official holiday.

Although the norm will not be in force until June, the Ministry of Work and Social Security issued a special resolution allowing Cubans to observe Good Friday this April 18.

However, it said those who work in services such as sugar cane harvesting, shipping and receiving, transportation, health care, tourism and other services, would not be granted the holiday.

After Fidel Castro assumed power in Cuba in 1959, religious holidays and practices were outlawed.

Religious processions and Christmas were reinstated after John Paul II’s visit to Cuba in 1998.

The Cuban Conference of Catholic Bishops announced on their website this week that state television would broadcast a passion play on Wednesday evening from the Cathedral of Havana.

It will be sad to see more religious freedom for Christians in Cuba and Russia than in the USA.

How’s this going to look.
An oppressive communist government makes Good Friday an official holiday and the US government does everything it can to destroy Christian holidays.

It might look like this kind of blasphemy:

Even communists sometimes wake up to the fact that they owe their existence to Christian values and charity.

Blasphemy? How so? The photo shows a “catholic” Nancy Pelosi on her knees in a position of servitude, washing the feet of others, in an Episcopal Church.

I suspect you comment was sarcasm, but...

I was highly offended when I saw this on many, many levels. From Pelosi being a Catholic and then pulling this stunt outside the Catholic faith to turn it into political theatre, to the whole symbolic nature of a government official seeming to endorse/use a religious event like this to not act as a servant of the people, but to literally ‘wag her finger’ in the faces of the people as if she has any moral authority to do this.

It is not just the hypocrisy of the moment, but the blasphemy of the message of gospel and an infringement on the religious liberty of the faithful. Somebody asked me how I saw this as an infringement and I explained the true meaning behind the washing of the feet by Jesus and how this obnoxious display, by a heretical Catholic, leads astray the people of faith into the arms of placing their ‘faith in government’ over their faith in God.

You are right, of course, in that she she has used this as a self-promoting act, however, it is kind of nice to see her on her knees for a change ;-)

Is this America or Cuba?

The state run religion of the country is secular humanism..

And we don’t have enough separation of church and state as there should be...

Ironic. That is how it will look.

It's up to the GOP and American Republicans to come up with a candidate that I will vote for.
How COULD I vote for a Mormon? They STILL believe that Jesus and Lucifer were BROTHERS. How wrong can they be?
