SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.—A Southern California diocese has paid $3.8 million to settle two child-abuse lawsuits brought against a former Catholic priest.

The Diocese of San Bernardino announced Sunday that payments settling the two civil cases involving Alejandro Castillo came from a combination of insurance and diocese funds.

I guess they were too big to declare bankruptcy and avoid civil litigation.

Meanwhile, while searching for the term "diocese" on FR, this came up regarding the same diocese. San Bernardino Diocese to celebrate cultures, push for immigration reform

Stupid is as stupid does.

It is high time the Church re-evaluate its totally insane policy of mandatory priestly celibacy which has produced horrendous travesty. There is NOTHING in the Bible which mandates such a counterproductive and destructive policy. To the contrary, priests in the Bible were in fact married men. So were the early popes, bishops, and priests in the first ten centuries of the Catholic Church. We need normal heterosexual married men in the priesthood. The Lord commands us to be fruitful and multiply. The Lord put Eve on this earth because He did not want Adam to be alone. This is God’s plan. He wants us to celebrate, not celibate life. Physical intimacy between a husband and a wife is a precious gift from God which should be denied to no man, especially our priests.

Agree wholeheartedly. However, this defrocked priest abused boys. He’s a perv.

I think some of it comes from insurance. The L.A. Archdiocese was slapped with about $600 million in settlements because of these depraved priests.

virtually all homosexual molestations...and married priests would not solve ANY of the problems....Protestant clergy, teachers, scout leaders, etc, etc far outnumber Catholic clergy in the number of offenses

A large community of heterosexual married priests in the Catholic Church would help drive away the homosexuals and pedophiles.

I do not maintain that the policy of mandatory priestly celibacy causes pedophilia or homosexuality. I do maintain that the policy helped create an atmosphere attractive to such individuals.

The much bigger point is this: There is NOTHING contained in the Bible mandating celibacy as a precondition for service in the priesthood. PERIOD.

**heterosexual married priests in the Catholic Church would help drive away the homosexuals and pedophiles.**

Celibacy isn’t the problem here. Pedophilia is, and married men are far more prone to pedophilia than celibate priests.

no body said that it was O.K., I merely pointed out that it is a homosexual problem, not one related to celibacy. I know that the bible does not command that its' priests and ministers to remain celibate but the Catholic church does......don't want to be a priest.....fine, want to be one (other than a transfer from, for example the Episcopal church), don't get married. All institutions have rules....all of them, all institutions have responsibilities, and the Catholic church (2,000) years old decided on some rules and regulations on their own. While the church could change its stance on celibacy, it cannot change its stance on ordination of females.....NEVER HAPPEN!!!

Incoming.......

I agree wholeheartedly but since I’m the enemy, I’m sure I’ll just get roundly castigated for it.

A married clergy would prevent the priesthood from becoming a safe haven for homosexuals.

If what you posted is what you believe, that’s great. Why bring up the comparison to other who likewise sin in defense of priest’s that get caught? Homos the problem in most cases yes, not all. The real issue is why shuffle the offenders, prosecute them.

CELIBATE priests aren't the problem.

Do you have something against married men and fathers?

Is there a reason that is pointed out every time someone mentions the legitimate problem the Catholic church has had with child molesting priests?

I am dumbfounded that Catholic pedophiles can get insurance for their crimes...They must get group rates...

yeah, there are no homo's living married lives......anyway that is not the answer, proper screening of men entering the priesthood is........now keep in mind, homosexuality itself is not banned by the church......only homosexual behavior. If you are a Catholic priest, neither hetrosexual nor homosexual activity is allowed......what your inclinations are is not important, only your bahavior is.....and there have been violations on both sides, both ways!!!

It's not an accurate portrayal of the problem.

The better comparison would be to compare percentages.

However, that still is not the issue because the priests have taken a vow of celibacy and have broken it in the worst way possible. The Catholic church takes the high moral ground and has betrayed that confidence in the worst way imaginable.

There is no excuse for the way the Catholic church has delat with the problem.

THAT is the issue.
