Writer and scholar Reza Aslan was 15 years old when he found Jesus. His secular Muslim family had fled to the U.S. from Iran, and Aslan's conversion was, in a sense, an adolescent's attempt to fit into American life and culture. "My parents were certainly surprised," Aslan tells Fresh Air's Terry Gross.
As Aslan got older, he began his studies in the history of Christianity, and he started to lose faith. He came to the realization that Jesus of Nazareth was quite different from the Messiah he'd been introduced to at church. "I became very angry," he says. "I became resentful. I turned away from Christianity. I began to really reject the concept of Christ."

Says that Desciples could not have written about Jesus because they illiterate.
Seems most of his conclusions are based upon his beliefs of the time with no proof. States that Jesus was political and was crucified for that reason.
What's more, I listened to the entire hour-long interview of him by the aptly named Terry Gross, and it was pure tedium.
No new historical insights, discoveries, or conclusions.
The guy is a Grade A putz, not a religious scholar.
Let him squawk. He doesn’t know Him and he never did.

This guy has no idea what he’s talking about.
Matthew was a tax collector, who would have had to keep records in his line of work. The ancient historians tell us that he was the first to write down the sayings of Jesus—within a decade or two after the Resurrection. The Gospel of John was written by a disciple.
Peter was indeed a fisherman—he may well have been illiterate. BUT the earliest Christian historians tell us that Mark was the companion of St. Peter, and that he wrote down Peter’s teachings while in Rome. And, in fact, Mark’s Gospel is full of Latinized Greek, like kenturion from Latin Centurion.
Aslan isn’t a Christian anymore! I hope.nobody tells C.S. Lewis! ;-)
He is like every one else that wants to make a name for himself.
He makes one statement that there is some truth to, many Churches do preach Jesus a little different than what he is portrayed in the scriptures and he builds up his entire story based on the hope that most people can recognize that one thing.
That is a very good reason why preachers should teach only what the scriptures say, we all have our own conclusions but mostly it is best to keep them to ourselves.
Everything else that is stated here is not backed up by any kind of proof, well maybe if you buy the book.
For instance, as far as the world of education is concerned i am called illiterate but i can read and write.
The Scribes and Pharisees were no doubt very well educated and they were determined to keep the jobs which i would call a gravy train that this education was providing them.
That is why they made a point to mention that the Apostles were illiterate,( ignorant ) because the truth was going to put them out of a job if every one believed it.
But unless we want to go all the way back to when people thought the world was flat the real scientific revolution is not even a hundred years old.
And that fact alone should tell any Christian that the guy is full of bull, but bull is what sells books and that is no doubt the only object.
So NPR does religious programming now? Where is the ACLU?
It's like a 13-year-old wandering into an exacting technical discussion by advanced physicists, listening uncomprehending for 2 1/2 minutes, and then proclaiming with adolescent confidence, "But guess what, you guys.. light is both a particle and a wave! Did'ja ever think of that? Huh? Did'ja? No, I didn't think so. You guys just can't handle the truth."
"Dude, if God were omniscient and omnipotent and all good, then how come there's cancer, and evil like Hitler 'n Bush 'n, like, why doesn't he just give me a new iPhone 5G 'n stuff?"
I love it when they say that.
