‘Gaying the pray away,’ via the Washington Post

The best journalists strive to present facts without bias or editorial comment.

Then there’s the Washington Post Twitter page.

In reporting on Exodus International’s decision to shut down, whoever tweets for the Post chose op-ed cutesy over straight-news accuracy.

The Post’s tweet, sent to 1.7 million of the newspaper’s followers:

Gaying the pray away

Huh?

What does that even mean?

Did the Post’s social-media gurus fear that a less-biased tweet wouldn’t draw as many clicks? This was the headline on the actual story to which the tweet linked:

Exodus International, criticized for ‘reparative therapies’ for gay Christians, to shut down

Now, that headline’s not perfect. I’d prefer one without scare quotes that describes what Exodus did in a less tilted manner. But it’s better than the tweet.

As we discussed in our previous post on Exodus last week, the media’s frequently referenced “pray the gay away” quote lacks a named source.

As our esteemed head GetReligionista — tmatt — has noted, “In all of my years covering ex-gays, I’ve never met anyone who actually claimed they could pray the gay away.”

Like the Associated Press and Religion News Service stories covered in the previous post, the Post article notes Exodus head Alan Chamber’s comments on theology and changing position on how to relate to the gay community:

In an apology to the gay community, Chambers noted that he “cannot apologize for my deeply held biblical beliefs about the boundaries I see in scripture surrounding sex” and marriage but added that he will no longer “fight you on your beliefs or the rights that you seek.”

Chambers, who says he and his wife Leslie “are more in love than we’ve ever have been” but admits to still being attracted to men, said in a nearly hour-long talk Wednesday at the organization’s 38th annual conference that he and Exodus leaders came to the conclusion that God was calling them to shut down the ministry.

The New York Times, too, notes that Chambers still believes that Scripture does not condone homosexuality.

Has anybody seen any coverage where Chambers — or any other advocates of the ex-gay movement — actually said that they can “pray the gay away?”

oy. "Praying the Gay Away" is how it's supposed to work. The exact reverse of what the little strumpet tweeted.

Hope that makes sense.

[[The reason Exodus shut down was because true religious leaders QUIT FUNDING Exodus because of Alan Chamber’s leadership. That’s the real truth.]]

Then why don’t they come out and make a statement to htis fact instead of lettign alan further hurt the ministry by spouting lies and half-truths? They shoudl act now to get it on record that alan’s ideology was NOT consistant with God’s word any logner, so therefore these folks quit supporting his unbiblical ideals

Some of us are trying to do just that. I’ve already written up an article on this which is in the pipeline.

There is going to be a full-court press on Christians who state that homosexuality is a sin. The folks who believe it is a virtue see this as evidence that the wind is blowing in their favor. Especially given the timing of the boy scouts and now another ‘institution’ in the eyes of the other side.

I’ve been fighting this fight for awhile now, and it is a frustrating and lonely fight, especially for a young man. I wish I could say that when the lights go out that I had someone to turn to who would say, “you did good, Tiger”, but alas, I do not.

But what else can I do? Truth is truth. Sometimes it has to be blunt.

They are going to do whatever they can to ostracize folks that they disagree because they feel that the time is now and that they can get away with not so much blowback.

So, we’d best stick together and slow down the attacks on each other. We’re going to need every good person we can get.

So? I'm married for 30 years, and I'm still attracted to cute young women. I just don't ACT UPON my temptations. Is it so hard to understand?

“The reason Exodus shut down was because true religious leaders QUIT FUNDING Exodus because of Alan Chamber’s leadership.” Thank you for mentioning that. I was wondering what the real reason was. Hmm, poor leadership. Blame it on God?

[[There is going to be a full-court press on Christians who state that homosexuality is a sin.]]

You bet there is- I said it the day alan betrayed God- that he has doen irreprable damage to Christians (but of course he won’t apologize for that- he apparently just apologizes to gay people for hurtign hteir feelings I guess)

[[The folks who believe it is a virtue see this as evidence that the wind is blowing in their favor.]]

Exactly- That’s what I tried sayign - but not gettign across well- satan has another toehold thanks to alan- and I really beleive this is goign to go the way of evolution where ‘the consensus’ now deeclares ‘the science is settled- evoltuiopn is fact’ simpyl because peoepl STOPPED fightign against the idea- they see a lackj of serious opposition as a victory, and WILL exploit that just like they exploit a lack of serious opposition to ‘man-caused global warming’ as a victory meaning ‘the consensus’ now ‘beleives man is causing global wamring- therefore it is a fact’

[[Especially given the timing of the boy scouts and now another ‘institution’ in the eyes of the other side.]]

Precisely! The timing was a severe blow to Christians- I suspect alan knew this too- but just diodn’t care any logner- I beleive he knew this would severely hurt Christians andm orality-

[[But what else can I do? Truth is truth. Sometimes it has to be blunt.]]

Keep on keeping on till God says enough-

[[They are going to do whatever they can to ostracize folks that they disagree because they feel that the time is now and that they can get away with not so much blowback]]

That’s exaCTLY what they did with global warming- ostracised anyoen that tried to refute them, were even hostile towards them, and bullied everyoen into silence-

[[So, we’d best stick together and slow down the attacks on each other.]]

I ghope you didn’t htink my post was an attack- if you mean I’m attackign alan- I’m simply pointing out truth- truth is not an attack- truth standso n it’s own merrits- always has- God’s word has stood and will continue doing so even htough it is being palyed up as ‘an attack’ by homosexuals because God calsl homosexuality an abomination- the truth is, that God uses the strognest word possible to explain that He is very seriosu abotu the the sin- QWe need not apologize for speakign truth

A homosexual subverts an organization and then offers an “apology” for trying to counsel those who are questioning their sexuality.

Funny how there isn’t the same backlash against those who counsel those who are “questioning” or “bi-curious” who often are throwing their lives and mental stability away to be “the new plaything” among a culture of perverts.

Some gay people. Some others want to turn toward God and turn their lives around. That is (or was) the whole point of Exodus.

No, not at all. That part was not directed at you even if the post as a whole was in response to your comments. I do not believe you are attacking, and I simply wanted to add onto your already excellent comments and reinforce your theme.

We are going to see more of Alan. I am sure of it. It’s best we know our enemy so we can be prepared for his tactics and games and gimmicks.

I suggest everyone concerned about this issue take the time to read what he has to say about homosexuality, about Jesus and about God. None of the ideas are new - but I suspect he is going to take this platform he has been given of it.

As for evolution - I feel the same way about Malthus. Having studied the issue, there were a great many contemporary critics of both Darwin and Malthus, and many of them had excellent critiques. One of the benefits of a history education is the ability to examine old historical debates to unearth things which have been left buried.

If you are interested, PM me and I’ll hook you up with some excellent books. Malthus is especially prevelent today.

thatnks for thel ink- I’m hearuign that there’s a new group cropping up- howerver, I’m al ittle disturbed that many members of the now defunct exodus programs are jumping onboard the new program- IF they were NOT strogn enough to stand up against alan’s ‘cheap grace’ ideology (meaning they beleive God wasn’t really serious about certain sins liek homosexuality even htoyugh God’s word is full of harsh condemnation agaisnt against it)- then I don’t thibnk they shoudl be aCCepted in the new group- The new group shoudl be made up of folks who take a pledge to report ANY deviances from God’s word IMMEDIATELY when htey encoutner it- lay out the foudnations concepts CLEARLY and have everyoen sign it with full knowledge that deviating will result in expulsion

Groups today are so afraid of beign sued, so afraid of ‘offending’ someone that htey tolorate one red flag afterr another until the whole base is undermined and the buildingfalls- just liek the boyscouts of America are doing- They let the cancer take hold, now it’s matasticised to htep oint hwere even an operation will not save the organization

That’s what I meant Mrs o- I generalized- but meant thsoe gay folks who do not want to admit homosexuality is a sin- Many (infact I suspect ALL know it is, but some DO have backbone enough to admit they are sinners and have a problem with immorality- those hwo opposed programs liek exodus are unwilling to overcoem hteir unnatural impulses as per God’s word- and so they attack everythign that tries to help those who recognize they werre not ‘born that way’ and who wish to overcoem their sinful lusts through God’s grace

I’d have to know his basic premise- I’m a young earth intelligent Design/creationist advocate

By the way- the discussion in the video at thel ink boycott gave me is excellent- the fella is bringign up soem excellent pionts- He’s smack dab i nthe midle of the battle too- and is beign attacked by the gay movement-

He is sayign hte gay groups are solely focused o nisolated cases of failure- NEVER o nthe success stories- they look at the ‘poster boy for exodus movement’ who got straightm, then later reverted back into the sin of homosexulaity as their ‘proof’ that programs like exodus are a failure, and he says that’s like saying ‘Look at so and so who kicked the drug habit, but then later fell off the wagon- thsi failure means that peopel can’t kick the addiction, so why even ask anyone to even bother tryign anymore’? He says ‘that’s the evil of the homosexual groups’ they celebrate failures as victories- What a powerful statement

Actually, "Pray the Gay Away" was not the Exodus slogan. I don't think Exodus made the claim that prayer could turn a man heterosexual and abolish same-sex temptation once and for all, forever. They just made the reasonable and true statement that prayer can help a man reduce obsessive gay drives and live in a chaste and honorable manner without sodomistic conduct.

"Pray the gay away" was a mocking caricature of that, invented by their LGBT opponents.
