European Commission Holds Minting of Slovakian Euro Bearing Images of Saints
Catholic Culture ^ | 6/18/13

The European Commission has ordered the National Bank of Slovakia not to mint new euros that would feature images of Sts. Cyril and Methodius, the New York Times reports.

Each member-state within the European Union has the authority to mint its own versions of the euro, incorporating its own national designs. But the European Commission ruled that the Slovakian design, hailing the 1,150th anniversary of Christianity in Slovakia, violated the principle of religious neutrality.

Or, perhaps, just as well...

Evidently not.

The EU is a bad idea. Each individual country has its culture and language, and should not be interfered with.

Gee....the Cyrillic alphabet is named for St. Cyrill.

He and Methodius brought civilization and written language to the Slavs...in addition to Christianity.

What are they saying? European history doesn't exist, if the Christian church is mentioned?

Is Notre Dame invisible?

Mint them and tell the powers that be to stuff it. Most money moves as electrons for business to business transactions anyway so what are they going to do anyway, outlaw Euros they don't mint themselves in direct violation of the EU agreement? That I could find, there's nothing that states they have veto authority over whats on the currency if it meets the criteria spelled out otherwise.

JMHO

It had a chance if it would have remained a free trade zone with very minimal regulations to harmonize commerce. Instead it became the biggest collection of pointless busybodies that side of Washington DC. Any organization which has time to regulate the straightness of bananas and cucumbers needs to be dissolved (preferably in strong solution of sodium hydroxide).

An image of Muhammad would be considered "religiously neutral," however.

Maybe they could appease the godless, while at the same time expressing Czech devotion, by putting the words “God Accepts Czechs” on the currency.

The alphabet now called Cyrillic is not the one invented by St. Cyril. The Glagolitic alphabet seems to have been the one he created—it survived in a few parts of Dalmatia until fairly recently and there is an inscription in Glagolitic in the cathedral in Zagreb. The so-called Cyrillic alphabet seems to have been invented soon after St. Cyril’s time, maybe at Ohrid in Macedonia.

Essentially, yes, and don't you just love the term "religious neutrality"? The Europeans are just like the liberals who infested the city when I lived there.

They really do know how to make beautiful and pleasant places to live. Unfortunately, their lack of knowledge of economics and human nature assures that their pretty places must eventually collapse.
