Is yoga the work of the devil?
The Christian Diarist ^ | June 1, 2013 | JP

Posted on 06/01/2013 12:58:39 PM PDT by CHRISTIAN DIARIST

Father Gabriele Amorth is an old school priest. The octogenarian told The London Times this week that, since he was ordained way back in 1954, he has cast out some 160,000 demons.

I believe that gives Father Gabriele some authority on the devil. So when he told the Times, “Practicing yoga brings evil,” he got my attention.

I’ve long considered yoga a benign form of exercise, no more harmful than, say, aerobics or Pilates or, the apparent latest craze, Zumba. But after doing some research, I’m inclined to agree with Father Gabriele, the exorcist.

While yoga indeed has a physical component, it’s the spiritual component that leads to the devil. For yoga, defined as a “union with the divine,” is not about obeisance to the God that Christ followers worship. It’s about homage to the false gods of Hinduism.

That brings me to a lawsuit, brought by parents of children enrolled in the Encinitas Union School District in California, challenging the yoga program the district mandated for its nine public schools, under the guise of “physical education.”

Funding for the program comes from the KP Jois Foundation, which promotes a form of yoga called Ashtanga. The Ashtanga practice traditionally begins with a mantra, which concludes, “To Patanjali I salute.”

“Lord” Patanjali, as he is known by the Hindu faithful, is considered to be one the incarnations of Shesha, a many thousand-headed serpent god.

The Encinitas Union School District maintains that its district-wide yoga program is strictly secular; that neither Shesha, the serpent god, nor Patanjali, his human avatar, are anywhere to be seen.

But that’s not what Harvard-trained religious scholar Candy Brown found when she visited the Encinitas public schools. “I see it all over the place,” she testified in court a fortnight ago.

And even though the school district insists that there is no chanting of mantras, Dr. Brown provided the court written statements from teachers in the district that children have, in fact, been observed chanting while doing their yoga.

They were sending shout outs to Patanjali, the several-thousand-headed serpent god, and they were none the wiser.

Now, many may think the court case in California is much ado about a trifle. And even some Christians may argue that there is nothing unGodly about yoga. That they separate their faith and their workout. That Shesha and Jesus can peacefully co-exist.

Well, that’s KP Jois Foundation wants Encinitas parents. That’s what the devil wants all of us to think.

Which should bring to mind to all of us who count ourselves Christ followers the challenge Joshua issued to the children of Israel: “Choose you this day whom you will serve.

The choice for the Joshua’s people was between the gods their fathers served “that were on the other side of the flood,” or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land they dwelled after the Exodus, or the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

The choice today for those who consider themselves faithful Christians, who have been advised by Father Gabriele and others that yoga is a gateway to evil is whether they will stand with the Lord, or sit, in Lotus position, in homage to the serpent god Shesha.

I’m 36 years old and ALL of my friends are into yoga. I avoid it at all costs for this reason.

How much does it cost to avoid yoga?

I believe that makes him a whakadoodle.

My liberal friends and clients do yoga. None of my conservative folks do yoga..... Conservative guys I know wouldn’t be caught dead in a yoga class. Just an observation.

I remember reading about Zen meditation and how it was normal that at a certain stage very odd and occult seeming things would happen to practitioners. They were instructed to struggle through these. Perhaps, like a Ouija board, the act of deep meditation opens one up to the Evil Channel. I do know, from having been taken by a friend who was into TM (attended their “university” in Switzerland in the 70’s) to a meeting where acolytes were told the next stage would be levitation that the f***ers running that enterprise were palpably evil.

Spoken like a real "Yoga lover." Just don't move into my neighborhood, n'kay? Housing values here have already plummeted far enough.

I'll say this for yoga: I practiced it for several years without any chanting or homage to Hindu gods, and the stretching healed my badly damaged joint without any more of those horrible cortisone shots or surgery. I'm getting old; so it worked better for me than lifting weights or anything like that.

hmm ~ and what would Jonah do? ~ that Great Fish? The guys who came up with that one also invented Yoga, then there's the vine that grew up to shade Jonah ~ remarkably like another plant that grew up to shade and protect Buddah ~ again, what's that story really about?

There was a time when God's revelations traveled slowly among a small population of humans who had not yet domesticated the horse. They didn't read or write either. Variations in the text of the messages are known but the core values are timeless.

New Age and real Hinduism, or real yoga, have nothing in common. I loathe New Age crap as much as anyone on FR.

You just don’t happen to know much of anything about the topic, that’s all.

It's just your basic package of non impact exercise. a friend of mine has greeted every morning of his life that he can remember by assuming a lotus position, rotating on his arms and achieving a head stand.

He stays there a few minutes, recovers and goes on about his business. He's old enough now that this is as much a test of his continuing existence as it is anything else.

What you describe is reasonably common and I think most folks would think it to be pretty harmless. I think that's pretty harmless.

On the other hand, a lot of folks include meditation of a particular sort in their yoga routine. They empty their mind and try to eliminate their own "self" for a time. I think the worry about this sort of yoga is that if you are "not at home", someone else might move in and reside in your head. Some would take that seriously (I do) and others would not. But bottomline(for me) is that if yoga is nothing more than low impact aerobics and flexibility, than it doesn't seem like much of a threat. I do that much, and I don't think I have a demon in my head.

I take Yoga ,and I am a Methodist. Yoga helps to lengthen and strengthen your muscles, and relieves tension in your body. Holding the poses for 90 seconds is a lot harder than you would think. I have taken Step Aerobics, Tai Bo, Tai chi, and now I just do yoga and bike ride and take walks.

Neck exercises and back stretches keep you shoulders from touching your ears.

Yoga keeps you balanced , helps you get out of your beach chair, look over your shoulder when driving, stand on one leg while putting your pants on, and it just makes life better for me. I only wish I had started taking it earlier in life.

I don’t care what you say about Yoga as an exercise, it is something I will not stop doing.

I am not ignorant of Hinduism, do not practice it, and am not afraid of those who do. God is good to me, and he lets me take yoga when I can get to the class.. Praise the Lord!

So, exercise leads to paganism and animism?

That doesn’t prove anything. The directors told im it’d be funny to do a yoga episode.

Absolutely Yoga is better than some traditional medicines. Yoga is not easy for someone who has never done it. Lots of folks come in and take a class and shy away, because it is not easy, but in yoga we always say.. “it is not a competition” you work on your own level and gain flexibility and strength at your own pace.

So now practicing "yoga" entails acceptance of the religion that started it.......m'kay.

Eating too much cabbage on memorial day causes side effects a week later such as yours. Most notable being bouts of stupidity............Sheesh!
