Survey finds strong Catholic support for immigration changes
Catholic News Agency ^ | Apr 27, 2013

Posted on 04/28/2013 6:44:48 PM PDT by Alex Murphy

Washington D.C., Apr 27, 2013 / 01:09 pm (CNA).- A survey commissioned by the U.S. bishops finds that almost 80 percent of Catholics support legal changes that allow immigrants to gain “earned citizenship” through meeting certain requirements.

“It is clear that Catholics understand the importance of this issue,” Archbishop José H. Gomez of Los Angeles, who chairs the U.S. bishops’ migration committee, said April 19 in response to the poll.

“As an immigrant church, Catholics from all walks of life understand the migration experience and accept the Gospel’s call to welcome the stranger.”

The survey, commissioned by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Office of Migration Policy and Public Affairs, found that 77 percent of U.S. Catholics support citizenship for immigrants who fulfill requirements like registration, paying a fine, paying taxes, and taking English classes.

Eighty-four percent of respondents agree that requiring immigrants to register with the government in order to remain in the country would improve national security.

Another 75 percent of respondents said immigration law enforcement should be focused on “humane values” that deport violent criminals but “finds ways to work with people who have come to find a better life.”

Most respondents said that border security and humane treatment of illegal immigrants are compatible and most agree that the Church has an obligation to help those in need, even if they are illegal residents. Additionally, most believe that immigrants are good for the economy, and most thought that enforcement-only policy focused on deportations is bad for family unity.

Sixty percent of Catholics who attend Mass weekly or more said that the immigration issue is very important to them.

The Catholic bishops have endorsed changes to immigration law, such as allowing an expansive “path to citizenship” for undocumented immigrants and expanding legal migration for low-skilled migrant workers.

Archbishop Gomez encouraged Catholics to ask their legislators to support “humane” immigration reform, saying this would “help our brothers and sisters come out of the shadows and become full members of our communities.”

IMHO, they foolishly believe that the illegals will fill their pews when they are not out driving around drunk. They’ve got a big shock coming.

I think they're pretty much used to it by now, given Edward Kennedy and all.

The Catholic Church is not exactly an 'immigrant church'. Columbus had a priest on board ~ that was at the beginning of the period where Europeans, specifically Spanish conquistidores began conquering the Americas and taking them over.

Historically, the Protestan churches are part of the 'immigrant', as distinct from the 'conquistedore', experience!

Not to be picky, but the bishops know better.

I refuse to take this seriously until several things are revealed in detail.

Where and how was this survey done?

What was the phrasing of the questions, and how many questions were there?

Until then this so called survey can be viewed as totally irrelevant and fraudulent.

IMO the Bishops ran a poll of other Bishops and got the answer they wanted.

I know a few Catholics as I attend Church regularly, and not one of them favors Amnesty.

Of course where I live we work for a l;iving.

I forgot the most important question : in that survey, was a clear distinction made between legal and illegal immigrants?

Confounding the issue has always been the ONLY useful strategy among the pro-illegals supporters.

I’m a conservative Roman Catholic.

Let ME design the survey questions!

1-Do you believe that immigrants who came here illegally should be given the advantages of citizenship ahead of those legal immigrants who have properly applied for citizenship?

2-Do you think it’s fair that the current flood of illegal immigrant workers have relegated legal immigrants to slave wages?

Now, some do-gooder is going respond that “employers should provide fair wages for all workers”.
Because the do-gooders would like to pretend that supply and demand have no effect on wages.

...found that 77 percent of U.S. Catholics support citizenship for immigrants who fulfill requirements like registration, paying a fine, paying taxes, and taking English classes.

Two problems with this wording, bordering on fraud and/or negligent incompetence.

One. No mention of allegiance to a foreign country or religion.
Second, it is laughable to requiring "taking English classes...

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

(no requirement that they actuall become fluent enough in English to satisfy the obligations of citizenship, without seriously compromising the safety of genuine American citizens. NO PROVISION FOR THE REVOCATION OF CITIZENSHIP IF LIES AND SUBTERFUGE ARE PROVIDED AS 'TRUTH' IN THE APPLICATION FOR CITIZENSHIP.)

No oath required to assert that they do not intend to exist permanently on national charity.

If the bishops are delusional enough to expect to override civil law, what's to stop the koranimals from demanding the same?

Arguing that you disagree with LBJ’s plan - fine. I can understand that.

Arguing that the US is overpopulated by 100 million people- I’ve heard that - from the Left. So yeah, I’m going to have to say something when I hear someone say that. The left uses your argument as justification for abortion. Do you not see this?

Sanger said precisely the same thing, that she believed that it was injurious to the race. You’re not in good company here ansel.

Personally, if the Republican party wants to become the party of white people only, it deserves to die.

So you aren’t willing to recant the assertion that America is overpopulated by 100 million people.

Ok.

So what do you propose be done about it? I’m all ears.

I have nothing against legal immigration. I think it’s a net boon and benefit to America. I oppose illegal immigration and believe all those found to be in America illegally should be deported.

I believe that consistant enforcement of the present immigration rules would drastically change the landscape such that many would leave of their own accord. But this would require consistant enforcement by deporting everyone, no exceptions, found to be here illegally.

Like I said - they use your overpopulation argument to argue for abortion. Are you aware of this?

Do you not see why conservatives might be bothered by you siding with them on this issue? Especially given the 50 million americans already aborted? Especially given your 100 million figure. That’s 1 in 3 Americans who you believe are unworthy of the name. Look to your right - that person you are saying should not be in America.

It is incredible the way you promote your immigration agenda and use personal attacks to do it.

I am against immigration, it is destroying us and making abortion impossible to end, gay marriage inevitable and empowering the democrats and killing off conservatism forever, yet you support immigration.

Why do you support importing masses of democrat voters, what do you think that does to our chances of ending abortion and returning to conservatism?

Can you explain your disconnect, of being on a conservative forum yet supporting the importation of masses of liberal, pro-abortion voters?

I’ve been hearing this “but the illegals are all good Catholics argument since forever”.... they are not good Catholics.... their behavior largely mimics that other problematic bunch

Yes and I will bite on dummy’s hypothetical about if they were all Calvinists.... lol....who talks like that since the 1700s

Well if the illegals were all charismatics or SBC or lipscomb/harding COC or Lutheran MoSynod

Then hell yes...by all means that would indicate they are a fairly safe bet to help save America

You said the US is overpopulated by 100 million people. What do you believe should be done to correct this?

“Why do you support importing masses of democrat voters, what do you think that does to our chances of ending abortion and returning to conservatism?”

If conservativism is only appealing to white people, then:

1, we aren’t doing our job to sell conservativism to everyone.

2, we have work to do to correct the system such that it will provide opportunities to speak out about conservativism.

To me, the biggest problem isn’t immigration - it’s the welfare state. Why a conservative would argue against immigration and for the welfare state makes no sense to me. Eliminate the free handouts.

A big reason why people don’t value conservativism and market economics is that it has no reality on their day to day life. When they can cash in their taxpayer funded EBT card - what sense does it make to be conservative? Nothing. People come because of the bennies - take the bennies away and you’ll get the people who want to become Americans.

If you’re in favor of ending abortion, how do you reconcile that with your fervent belief that America is overpopulated by 100 million people? Is it just because they are the wrong kind of people?

Do you support contraception?

No numbnuts

Its about bringing in folks likely to vote conservative

If we are to allow such high velocity immigration...as we have the past 4 decades

Under the controls prior to 1965 it wouldn’t have mattered so much

We have transformed our country more in the past 40 than in the previous 160

And in a decidedly more liberal direction

With folks who see themselves often as victims and our heritage as one of oppression with racial, ethnic, gender, and religious overtones.....and have proven to not assimilate much like Europeans of all stripes did....and the more European Latinos do

Basically one big hate crime...us and the white Western civ in general

They are on the cusp of being undefeatable....in such a short time from Magnus final year to this....24 years

This is bad news for us....if you disagree you might should rethink why you post here

Its Camp of the Saints meets Hegel meets Alinsky meets the Hadiths
