Catholic Church Withdraws Subpoena to Obama on Birth Control

Scaling down a legal fight with the White House, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York has agreed to drop a request for documents about the government's requirement of insurance coverage for birth control, a court filing on Monday said.

The archdiocese sent a subpoena to President Barack Obama's administration in February asking for documents from White House staff, including Obama himself, for use in a church lawsuit against the contraception mandate.

Citing the burden involved and calling a subpoena of the president's office inappropriate, the White House asked a federal judge to toss out the subpoena on April 4.

A notice filed in U.S. District Court in Washington late on Monday said the archdiocese agreed to withdraw its subpoena. It did not say why.

A lawyer for the archdiocese declined to comment on Tuesday. A spokeswoman for the U.S. Justice Department, which represented the White House in court, had no immediate comment.

The archdiocese is continuing its lawsuit in Brooklyn federal court challenging the Obama administration's health policy requirement that employers generally include coverage of birth control in health insurance plans they offer workers.

The Catholic Church teaches that artificial birth control is sinful because it violates natural law.

Part of the 2010 healthcare law championed by Obama and congressional Democrats, the birth control mandate has some exceptions for religious employers but the New York archdiocese said it expected to incur nearly $200 million each year in penalties if it refuses to comply.

Ok, the more I read how people back down to this man, I have to believe this MUST be a part of ‘it is written.’ I cannot imagine anything else.

I have to agree with you. It seems everyone gives up without a fight, regardless of what’s at stake...why??

In the late 1960's, the "Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops" advocated open rebellion against the moral teachings of the Catholic Church, in a document called the "Winnipeg Statement", and in other subsequent actions. As far as I know, they have never rescinded that rebellious stand.

It appears that the USCCB (Cardinal Timothy Dolan and other U.S. Bishops) is also getting ready to surrender to Satan and his evil forces, by giving up the fight to be able to practice our Catholic Faith with Religious Liberty and Freedom, as guaranteed by our U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights, in the 1st Amendment.

Cardinal Dolan has demonstrated bizarre support for the Anti-Catholic President Obama, and has also recently expressed his openness to seeing the 2nd Amendment nullified in America, and to see illegal immigrants rewarded in spite of their unlawful actions, going directly against the teachings in the "Catechism of the Catholic Church", paragraph 2241, where it plainly says that immigrants have to obey the laws of the land that are going to:

There are not many good options I can think of to deal with these problems. The two that come quickly to mind are these: There seems to be no good explanations for all the bizarre and unbelievable things going on today in our Church, our Country, and the world. It seems like "demonic forces have been turned loose for a season".

Pray without ceasing.

I am so sick and tired of the bishops’ cowardice. I no longer have no respect for them whatsoever.

Why is the laity much more traditional than most bishops?

The subpoena isn't going to be complied with and fighting over whether the President should comply isn't going to help anything at this point.

If no organization that defends the Constitution was going to step up and at least help fight the battle over whether or not the President has to comply it doesn't make sense to fight a whole second legal battle over whether or not a sitting President has to comply with subpoenas. IIRC, several Presidents in the past have won when they didn't comply with a subpoena so what are the odds fighting over it will do anything other than run up legal fees?

The President fights these battles with taxpayer money while the Church doesn't. It's not "backing down" to avoid costly battles over Presidential powers when the issue is the HHS mandate and the First Amendment.

Sadly, this should not come as a surprise.

We need a prophet to stand up. Not a politician to schmooze.
