Catholic Senator Bob Casey "Evolves" on Gay Marriage, Bishop Bambera Speaks Out
Creative Minority Report ^ | April 2, 2013 | Matthew Archbold

Posted on 04/02/2013 2:25:14 PM PDT by NYer

Just last year, Bob Casey ran for re-election as a pro-marriage senator. Now, the Catholic senator from Pennsylvania, has "evolved" on the issue and is now in line with his party by declaring he's pro-gay marriage . Wonder if this has anything to do with recent polls shifting towards gay marriage.

This is hardly stunning coming from Casey who swore all over the state that he was a devout Catholic and pro-life like his father, the late Governor Bob Casey. The "pro-life" Casey has repeatedly betrayed the unborn both with his vote for Obamacare and repeated votes to fund Planned Parenthood. If someone is willing to turn their backs on the issue of life, marriage isn't that big of a deal.

Casey's statement, according to The Inquirer, seemed to argue that gay marriage will help strengthen marriage:

"If two people of the same sex fall in love and want to marry, why would our government stand in their way?" Casey said in a statement that included "support for marriage equality."

"At a time when many Americans lament a lack of commitment in our society between married men and women, why would we want less commitment and fewer strong marriages?" he said.

The Bishop of Scranton Joseph Bambera released a statement on Senator Casey's stance on gay marriage stating:
Pennsylvania’s senior United States Senator, Robert Casey issued a statement supporting marriage equality for same-sex couples and asserting his belief that the Defense of Marriage Act should be repealed. In so doing, Senator Casey has unfortunately and disappointingly set aside the Catholic belief and teaching that the sacrament of marriage, rooted in the natural law, is a faithful, exclusive, lifelong, loving union of a man and a woman open to the transmission of human life. The dual purpose of marriage: the unity and love of a man and a woman, and procreation has been rooted in human history long before any religion, nation or law was established. Senator Casey’s position is contrary to the teaching of the Catholic Church.

While the Church has been and continues to be clear in its long standing teaching on marriage, its defense of marriage should not be interpreted as an attack on individuals with same sex attractions. The Church likewise has proclaimed since its beginnings that every person has an inherent dignity. Like all human beings, our lesbian or gay sisters and brothers are beloved children of God. As a result, the Catholic Church affirms that they “must be accepted with respect, compassion and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in this regard should be avoided” [Catechism of the Catholic Church no. 2358]. Clearly, the Church asserts that the fundamental human rights of all persons must be defended, and encourages the elimination of any form of injustice, oppression, or violence against all people, regardless of sexual orientation.
That's a pretty strongly worded statement. Let's all keep our eye on what comes next, if anything.

One interesting note here from the Inquirer's story on Casey's evolution on this issue is how they describe Casey. Check it out and see if you pick up on it:
Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey said Monday that he now supports same-sex marriage, reversing his position and joining a long line of Democrats who have changed their minds on an issue that has seen a rapid shift in public opinion.

Casey, a moderate Democrat on social issues and a pro-life Catholic, said letters from constituents had "a substantial" impact on his views. He singled out one in which a woman with two children and an 18-year-long relationship said she wanted her family to be treated "equally and with respect."
Yup. A news source described a politician as being "pro-life." Can you believe it? I thought that was verboten. So I guess the only way to be called "pro-life" by the media is to not be pro-life. Oh, and be a Democrat.

Well, we have liberal “Republicans.” Is there such a thing anymore as a conservative Democrat?

The Bible & US Constitution with its Bill of Rights have been the foundation our a great society for 200+ years and liberals want to re-write both of them.

Destroy the traditional family and normalize deviancy.

Casey is an embarrassment to our commonwealth.

So many senile citizens who thought they were voting for the second coming of his father, and still do.

Arguably, the dumbest member of the U.S. Senate with a penis, though Al Franken could give him severe competition.

Congenial, yes, but then so is the autistic girl who cleans tables at our local Wendy's. And I have a far more pleasant and intelligent conversation with her because she actually has some moral grounding. Casey Jr. has few core values other than what his handlers tell him.

“Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey said Monday that he now supports same-sex marriage, reversing his position and joining a long line of Democrats who have changed their minds on an issue that has seen a rapid shift in public opinion.”

The problem is not the growing list of Democrats who support Gay Marriage, but rather the growing list of Republicans that support Gay Marriage.

I don't know what it is with these people. As long as they are quoting part of the CCC, why not the whole section so it's in context:

2357 Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity,140 tradition has always declared that "homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered."141 They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.

2358 The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God's will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord's Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.

2359 Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection.

By only quoting that relatively overused phrase, must be accepted with respect, compassion and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in this regard should be avoided without the preceding words, this inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial, it makes it seem like we should have "acceptance" as the goal rather than sympathy for their "objectively disordered" condition (which is clearly the meaning when you take it in context).

Argh.

Well, I frankly EXPECT Dems to side with evil.

Far more exasperating is watching GOP-ers cave and prostrate themselves before this wave of deviancy. But, having witnessed their behavior of late... capitulating on everything from fiscal cliffs to Obamacare to amnesty, and blaming all their political ills on their conservative base, I’m undoubtedly remiss in even having the slightest expectation that the Party is capable of principles anymore. Much less, decent values.

I've 'evolved' on marriage too.

I want to marry all of my adult children to avoid inheritance tax.

But seriously, what parts of:

Lev. 18:22, "You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination."
Lev. 20:13, "If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltness is upon them"
1 Cor. 6:9-10, "Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, shall inherit the kingdom of God."
Rom. 1:26-28, "For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper."

Are difficult to understand? What is unclear? How does a homosexual marriage fit in either the new or old testament?

So will the Catholic Church do anything to deny Casey the Sacrament or haul him for a stern conversation with the Bishop?

“Sorry, but respect is earned, not automatically granted to every pervert walking the earth.”

His point that individuals should be treated with dignity is spot on. Respect is earned, but God created humans in His image. Fallen though they may be, He sent His Son to redeem them and pay the hideous penalty of death to make salvation available.

I thank God I never struggled with same sex attraction. They are worth redeeming. I will not treat their behavioral choices as normal, but I hope for their salvation.

Sen. Casey shows his backbone by endorsing the redefinition of marriage AFTER he wins re-election.......in hopes nobody remembers when he runs for re-election in 2018.

The DNC is more and more filled with reliable votes, like Casey, who will never question his leaders, and fall in line every time.

“That’s a pretty strongly worded statement.”

Oh, baloney. What a crock. What a lie.

It’s as mealy-mouthed a statement as a bishop could issue.

HERE’S a strongly-worded statement:

“Bob Casey, I declare that you are excommunicated ferendae sententiae. Until you publicly repudiate both your pro-homo marriage and your pro-abort positions, and until you quit the Party of Satan and re-register in some political party that is not formally at war with God and the Catholic Church, you will remain excommunicated. You are a formal and public heretic, and you are not to be admitted onto the premises of any church, chapel, oratory or other place of worship within this diocese, to protect the Catholics of my flock against contagion from the moral diseases carried by you and other vermin like you. May God have mercy on your soul. I pray that you will not have to occupy the absolute lowest circles of Hell upon your death. Get thee behind us, Satan.”
