A former pastor of a northwest Indiana mega-church who has admitted having a sexual relationship with an underage parishioner exchanged hundreds of text messages with the girl and told her Jesus Christ sanctioned their relationship, prosecutors say.
The messages are quoted in a memorandum from prosecutors as they argue for a 10-year prison sentence for Jack A. Schaap, who has pleaded guilty to federal charges that he took a minor across state lines with the intent to engage in criminal sexual activity.
The memorandum, filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Hammond, details how Schaap, 55, "groomed" the girl into having sex with him while he was pastor at the First Baptist Church of Hammond and was counseling her. The girl had turned 17 when the incidents were happening, according to prosecutors.

The bible never condones unmarried sexual relationships. However that said, the “modern” idea of a marriageable age is years more than in the Lord’s own plan. Governments and socialist sociologists have a vested interest in keeping juveniles juvenile as long as possible. It ought to be treated as a plain vanilla fornication.
If they’d just let these pastors get married they wouldn’t have this problem.

Some cursory digging at this place’s website does not turn up any indication that it is associated with the Southern Baptist Convention, but it does have its own private missions arm called “Fundamental Baptist.” In my admittedly limited experience this seems to suggest an indy church with serious wild hairs. Not that being a fighting fundie is bad, this here redneck is one, but you can’t just be a spiritual wild cat loner with no discipline and hope to do very much right. Nobody has ever bothered to trademark the term “Baptist” which also makes it possible for such folks as Westboro (who aren’t even Christian) to use it without interference.
For having sex with a 17 year old? A bit harsh. If she was 10 or something maybe, but 17 is old enough to know better, frankly.
