Jewish people are not a race, per se. We are primaily semetic, yes.
But what left Egypt was a mixed multitude.
Certainly anyone, of any race, is able to convert and become as much a Jewish person as I am. Indeed, perhaps more so.
The geneologies primarily relate to specific promises to sub-sets of the Jewish people: Levites, Cohamnum, Line of David, etc.

Because you are Jewish through your mother. (Your father determines the tribe.) These children were not Jewish and their mothers/children did not want to convert and live as Jews.
If they had repented of their pagan ways, they would have been welcome to stay.
More than seeing and predicting the future of Europe, vis-a-vis the lives of Jews living in Europe, the Zionists saw and admitted more honestly than other Jews what Europe had been, vis-a-vis the lives of Jews and how that past was rooted in an antisemitism that Liberalism was not likely to squelch.
