Original Language of the Book of Mormon: Upstate New York Dialect, King James English, or Hebrew?
BYU Maxwell Institute ^ | 1994 | Royal Skousen

Posted on 02/24/2013 5:01:01 PM PST by Colofornian

...the original text of the Book of Mormon contains expressions which seem inappropriate or improper in some of their uses. For example, in the original text a good many occurrences of the phrase "and it came to pass" are found in inappropriate contexts. In his editing for the 1837 edition, Joseph Smith removed at least 47 of these apparently extraneous uses of this well-worked phrase. In most cases, there were two or more examples of "it came to pass" in close proximity; in some cases, nothing new had "come to pass."

What is distorted?

Royal Skousen is a respected Lds leader who gets stories written by him in the BYU Maxwell Institute, and February 2013 stories written about him in the Lds church-owned Deseret News.

You would actually think with the HUNDREDS of Lds-sourced articles, powerpoints, Pdfs, and other excerpts that I cite more Mormons would actually commend me for spreading the Mormon "gospel."

On top of that, I've cited THOUSANDS of direct quotes from Lds leaders ranging from 1830 to 2013.

You would actually think Lds would relish their leaders being cited that often.

But not you...and not most Mormons.

Do you know, therefore, what that conveys when you generate DOZENS of such contrarian posts to my frequent sourcing of all things Mormon?

Please correct me if reading these signals is somehow off-based, but doesn't that strike all you FREEPERS out there that too many FREEPER Mormons are very much ashamed of...
...their Lds general authorities and what they have said thru the years???
...their Lds media sources and what they have published even in just recent years???
...their Lds brethren for generating hundreds of scandals?

You would think with as many THOUSANDS of Lds citations as I have given, that every Mormon would rush out to this "Gentile" and mob me with congratulatories o'er placing all of this Mormon "thinktank" stuff in wider circulation...

...But...I somehow think that if I was ever to be mobbed by Mormons, it somehow might not exactly be for those reasons...

But, hey, Teppe, I love you in Christ; I love your fellow Lds, who deserve the truth...
...as I posted on the other thread today this link, MORMONS IN SHOCK: Love warns of danger -- Love, indeed, warns of danger, Teppe. Love teaches kids NOT to take street drugs, NOT to jaywalk in busy traffic, NOT to touch hot stoves, etc. The Bible is filled with warnings & admonitions...even the Lds D&C has admonitions that Lds leaders say their missionaries to give & Mom & Pop answering Lds missionary rung doorbells.

Enjoy your week, Teppe...the ONE TRUE God, and the ONLY SON He had in the pre-existence loves you...

Oh indeed, lets check out the Bat Crazy forgery.

The entertaining thing is that if one reads enough Mormon “scholarship” on the rock even they don't agree, some also acknowledge the truth that the rock was a scam.

If only their discernment extended to early 19th Century religious fiction...

I think the sci fi show of the 80’s with lorne green was based on the Mormon faith. Google it. Today I went to a Mormoun temple to support a friend whoms daughter is about to go on a mission. I could care less what he celebrates on Sunday. I hope people feel the same way of the Catholicism we practice. Everyone was really nice. Its America, the Puritans came here to escape religious persucution.

A “elder” asked us if we are “investigating”. I politley said no. That was the end of it. Nice folks. We were treated with well manors and smiles.

“And it came to pass” was his pet. If he had left that out, his Bible would have been only a pamphlet.

Most Mormons are very pleasant people to be around but that doesn't make their doctrine correct. It's not Mormons we have a problem with but Mormonism. Big difference.

From the headline: Upstate New York dialect...?

Ya know...one of bait & switch things that Lds missionaries engage in is to ask contacts to "pray about the Book of Mormon."

ALL: If you ever have an Lds missionary ask you to do that, ask them, "Which one?"

They will look at you in a confused manner, thinking there's only one.

But you see, the Book of Mormon has so much majestic King James Bible plagiarism in it, that if they were truly "up front" -- they'd show you the 1830 version so that you can see the "upstate New York-like" grammar-horrific UNmajestic version Smith put together prior to Lds leaders making THOUSANDS of changes.

You see reading the ORIGINAL Book of Mormon...
...with the majestic KJV excerpts --
--contrasted vs. Smith's Un-majestic portion of the BoM
-- would all be a dead giveaway that this wasn't the "genuine article."

But, hey, what do you expect when Mormon missionaries aren't exactly "out front" with many of their doctrines? (They promote pretty much ONLY the Book of Mormon)

Of course, the Book of Mormon has ZILCHO content/teachings about all the "later" developments of Joseph Smith...such as...
* God is a lower-level god who god assigned the "god job" for the Kolob-Earth district
* He was a man who earned his way to godhood; therefore, you can, too
* Temples are for baptizing dead people -- which Mormons hear from time-to-time in those temples (necro-immersing & necromancy)
* Any kind of "pre-existence"
* 3 degrees of glory -- with ONLY temple married Mormons having the opportunity to live eternally with Heavenly Father...(all others get a lower "glory"...as if Heaven could be Heaven minus Heavenly Father!!!)
* Hell isn't eternal -- damnation just means "damned up"
* Marriage & families are for eternity [imagine the Book of Mormon missing out on that one]
* Sealings & endowments & temple recommends & temple ritual language
* A mom-god or 2 or 3 or a harem of them

Anyway, no wonder there's "misunderstandings" of what Mormonism is! Here they do a bait-and-switch, asking people to pray about stuff that doesn't even record many of their primary teachings!!!

It's all downright deceptive.

Royal Skousen should push for THE original Book of Mormon to be handed out for "prayer purposes" by Lds missionaries...(Yeah, that'd go over like a green jello brick)

(Except that your Catholic leaders regard Mormonism as a "cult" and many heresies mingled into one...so much for your "regard" for your own leaders)

ALL: Note the contrast of a perspective of "I could care less what he celebrates on Sunday" & whatever nonsense his daughter teaches gullible others about vs. the apostle Paul:

I speak the truth in Christ—I am not lying, my conscience confirms it through the Holy Spirit— 2 I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my people, those of my own race, 4 the people of Israel. (Romans 9:1-4)

Wow...I didn't know you'd be so into promoting licenciousness, hedonism, and every "private" immoral lifestyle you can think of -- all covered under the immoral ethical banner of "whatever makes ya happy..."

to spend such a large part of it trying to discourage Christians with whom you do not agree.

I don't see where Colofornian is discouraging any Christians with exposing man-made teachings that don't agree with God's Word. If you are discouraged, well then.....

Focus on God's Word, not man's.

Yes, BSG was based on the book of mormon.
I like the remake way better.
Yes, people are free to practice whatever faith based system they choose.
However, mormonism tears people away from God Almighty to a false god(s).
As Christians we are commanded to call out false prophets and teachings, so posting of mormonism in their own words and own teachings does just that.
mormons in general are very pleasant people, not necessarily because they are but because it is part of their teachings for their taught salvation which is completely work based and not based on Grace.
I love my mormon family and friends, they are however deceived.

I heard about the Bat Creek Rock on History Channel ... not from anyone LDS ...

However, I understand from History Channel that it was recently validated that decomposition of minerals within the scratched inscriptions themselves

So, its very possible that your focusing on obselete material

... you know ... obselete like your Nicene Creed!

the whole “Bat Creek” thing or the “and it came to pass” Mayan Glyph are just interesting stories that do not prove or disprove the book of Mormon.

I believe the Book of Mormon to be true because of confirmation from my Heavenly Father.

As Christ recommended, I won’t go into detail by throwing pearls to swine.

The greatest contribution of the LDS Church to Christianity is the belief that you don’t have to take anyone elses word for it.

You can go straight to the Lord for an answer.

And that is where your inuendo, distortions and smears fail ejonsie22.

The Heavens are not sealed and God still speaks to mankind, even if your not capable of listening, doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen to those of us with open hearts.

Um, no.

There is a reason God gave man a mind. We are not to follow him blindly. Many voices can imitate the Holy Spirit and tell you many things that are not true.

You brought up the Bat Creek rick for a reason. Sadly for the LDS it is also reason that makes it a non starter.

Again.
