I’m always struck by the “hey, we’re no worse than the Boy Scouts, teachers, or Protestants,” argument. The only appropriate response to sin is repentance, not excuses. .

I think there are too many out there that want the Catholic Church to grovel forever over past sex scandal issues within the priesthood. Many use these issues for their own nefarious reasons, Catholic bashing, general religion hatred, atheists as a cause to manipulate for their own secularist gains, etc.
It’s the same as the guilt trippers who use the black slavery issue as a cudgel to call all who disagree with their political agenda “racists”. I personally am sick of it, and highly recommend that in both cases stated here, those with axes to grind stop beating a dead horse. Leave it alone.
Where do you see such argument made? In my #10 I point out the fallacy that celibacy is the cause of minor abuse, but I do not excuse the pederasts priests guilty of it, -- far from it.
Millions of teachers, just regular random people of the vast general public, atheists, witches, Catholics, Baptists, lesbians, Sikhs, Muslims, Buddhists, Mormons, Scientologists, transgenders, union/nonunion, agnostics, satanists, junkies, or teetotalers whatever plain old humans can be.
I would never have thought to have the same level of expectations of Roman Catholic Priests and people who work as teachers, in regards to child molesting and sexual perversions, but I see that a lot of Catholics here at FR do.
