Commentary: Papal Picks

Several people have been asking who I would like to see elected once Pope Benedict steps down. This is always a delicate question, for numerous reasons. First, it is quite clear that I do not, nor should I, get a vote. Whatever opinions I hold are simply that: my opinions and hopes. Second, should someone “off my list” be elected, I would not want people to think that I “disapprove.” Just like everyone else, I have various qualities that I would like to see in the new pope, but I also will pledge my undying fidelity and unceasing prayers to whoever occupies the Chair of St. Peter. Third, if the last several elections have taught us anything it is that old adage rings true: “He who walks into a conclave a pope comes out a cardinal.” In other words, these things are notoriously difficult to predict.

It is the longest of long shots, but I would love to see Charles Chaput. He is an amazing man, and I actually the privilige of sharing a bottle of wine with him one evening at a Kateri Conference. We were staying at the same hotel. He is truly filled with the Holy Spirit.

I agree with you about Bishop Chaput. Not only is he a faithful Catholic, he has done more than most good bishops to weed out the troublemakers in his dioceses.

He doesn’t just talk, he acts; and that’s what we need.

Burke would be more fun. Let the excommunications of politicians begin!

My longe-shot candidate is the Cardinal Archbp of Colombo Sri Lanka, #3 on this guy’s list. I’ve been promoting him among colleagues for the past week.

I think Raymond Cardinal Burke would be an outstanding choice but I’m comfortable waiting for the Holy Spirirt to make known His will.

I'm with you. Let just one -- say, Andrew Cuomo --- get the, OK, "pastoral care" he requires, and it will be a "sign that is contradicted" so that "the thoughts in many hearts will be revealed."

Better open war than more decades of preemptive surrender on the part of Christ's Holy Church.

I can’t get the thought out of my mind.

An abbot or someone non-descript who will surprise us all.
