E.J. Dionne -- The best choice for pope? A nun
CMR ^ | February 16, 2013 | Patrick Archbold

Posted on 02/16/2013 3:56:06 PM PST by NYer

The media silly season prior to a conclave may have just reached its peak.

The media has been giving all kinds of silly advice to the cardinal-electors and the future pontiff, but E.J. Dionne's idiocy takes the cake.

In giving up the papacy, Pope Benedict XVI was brave and bold. He did the unexpected for the good of the Catholic Church. And when it selects a new pope next month, the College of Cardinals should be equally brave and bold. It is time to elect a nun as the next pontiff.
...
A sister as pope could also resolve what might seem a contradiction in Catholic theology. More than Protestants, Catholics are profoundly devoted to the Virgin Mary — and few were as devoted as the late Pope John Paul II, who declared that Mary “sustains the spiritual life of us all, and encourages us, even in suffering, to have faith and hope.” A church for which the Blessed Mother plays such an important role should certainly be comfortable with female leadership.

While support for a stronger role for women in the church tends to be a “liberal” cause, many faithful conservatives also cite the work of nuns as reinforcing their devotion to the church — from the sisters who educated them in parish schools to the work of Mother Teresa’s religious order.
To even critique the writing of (e)EJ(it) is to give it more credibility than it deserves. It is infantile in the extreme.

That this is what passes for legitimate commentary is a paper such as the WaPo is all the evidence one would need to secure an indictment of irrelevancy.

I am offended by all of these charlatans who live lives that could hardly survive the scrutiny of the humblest fellow Catholic, having the chutzpah to lecture the faithful on selection of the Pope.

There’s already been a female Pope - Olimpia Maidalchini, sister-in-law to Pope Innocent X, also known as “La Papessa”.

She basically became the papal gatekeeper, who controlled access to the Pope - kind of like how Valerie Jarrett controls a certain Kenyan Usurper.

Yeah, the group that hasn’t yet accepted civil divorce and remarriage along with birth control is going to jump right into ‘female Popes’. Not even priestesses, right into Popesses. OK.

Freegards, thanks for all the pings on FR

There have been eight Popes and Antipopes named Alexander.
Pope Alexander I (c. 106 – c. 115)
Pope Alexander II (1061–1073)
Pope Alexander III (1159–1181)
Pope Alexander IV (1254–1261)
Antipope Alexander V (1409–1410) (Considered to be an Antipope; however, the next Pope Alexander took the name Alexander VI due to confusion over Alexander V’s status at the time.)
Pope Alexander VI (1492–1503)
Pope Alexander VII (1655–1667)
Pope Alexander VIII (1689–1691)

Pope Benedict was right on in condemning the activities of many American nuns. They are subversive and have become destroyers of the faith. May God have mercy on them for the destruction they have wrought.

There have been 6, the last being Urban VI who was Pope from 1378 until 1389. If that seem distant, consider that the last Pope to resign did so in 1415.

I am surprised he didn’t nominate Whoopi Goldberg, who played a nun in a movie. Think of the “firsts” in that one......

What an annoying non-sequiter.

Rather than trying to ruin the Catholic church, why don't liberals just start their own religion made in their own image? They could call it Unitarianism or something and it could be just as indistinguishable from pop culture as they want it to be.

Excuse me ~ the successor to Pope Alexander V ~ Antipope John XXIII ~ was a priest for one day but had earlier held office as Cardinal although he was a layman. At the time of his election numerous countries recognized him as pope. Currently the Catholic church does not consider him a pope ~ just one of a number of antipopes back in the middle ages during a schism. Alexander VI was Borja ~ and his father’s surname in one of its manifestations clearly links him to the Bishop of St. Malo ~ who actually provided Alexander VI some assistance during a period of duress. BTW, I had glossed over the Bishop of St. Malo in previous reads of the Catholic Encyclopedia ~ now I have to go back and start matching up some more Spanish nobles with Breton noble families. I’d imagine at the time this stuff was fairly well known or understood. Britany was a great power in the 1400s. They had most of the gold known to exist in Europe and played neutral to England and France in the 100 years war ~ while simultaneously keeping Spain well provided with knights for the Reconquista.

Fortunately the only Cardinals who give a rat’s patootie about what E.J. Dionne thinks play something similar to football in Arizona.

And I believe Whoopi’s had an abortion which appears to have become a requirement for liberal Catholics.
