Stock rises for 'Hitler's pope'

Pope Benedict’s decision to resign has re-ignited media debate about his degree of complicity in the cover-up of child abuse by Catholic priests.

That debate echoes an earlier controversy over the complicity in evil on a much vaster scale of a predecessor of Benedict.

Pius XII was pope during the Nazi period, and has been condemned for not using his office more vocally to denounce the persecution of Jews.

Ironically, it was Pope Benedict who stoked the debate about Pius in 2009 after calling for him to be granted venerable status, first stage on the road to sainthood.

What Benedict’s reputation will finally be remains to be seen. However, a book about Pius out next month seems destined to lay to rest the accusations that have branded him “Hitler’s pope”.

Relying on previously unused Vatican archive material, as well as eye-witness testimony, British author Gordon Thomas contends that Pius went out of his way at great personal risk to use the Church’s resources to protect Jews.

Had Pius denounced the Nazis any more vociferously, that covert rescue operation would have been jeopardised, which, argues Thomas, was why he remained as silent as he did.

Mr Thomas is no stranger to dispute, especially where his books about Jews are concerned. On the strength of research for a work about Mossad, he claimed in a BBC radio interview in 2010, that a million Jews world-wide were ready to act on the orders of the Israeli secret service, exposing diaspora Jewry to the charge of divided loyalties.

Mr Thomas drew heavily on controversial claims by a self-avowed Mossad member. This new book, whilst seen as controversial by some, should correct an historic wrong.

It’s called “Facia Contente”, literally Happy Face. What it means is we smile at you while behind your back you don’t know what’s really going on. Then you walk away thinking these Italians are such clowns.

The media will make no bones about their hatred of Catholicism, including libeling the pope and tying him to the priest abuse scandal, which actually occured inder John Paul II’s administration.

"Pope Benedict’s decision to resign has re-ignited media debate about his degree of complicity in the cover-up of child abuse by Catholic priests." The rest of the article, I suspect, was simply an excuse to put into print this one line.

So, a raging anti-Semite obsessed with International Jewry says the Church behaved responsibly in the Nazi period.

Well, I’m sure that will end the controversy over this once and for all....

Another cheap shot. Clearly it was too much to expect that the editors of the Jewish Chronicle would resist the “Hitler’s Pope” headline.

Nothing better than “renewed media debate” AKA renewed leftist attacks on the Church and the useful idiots propagating the same leftist opinionated garbage as Religion, News, & History on FR.

I don't know what people expected the Pope to do against Hitler. They were in his back yard and he had all the Catholics of Europe to think about. Say the wrong thing and it could have gotten millions of Catholics sent to the camps.

I think the Catholic church handled that situation the best they could.

Like the Christians in the middle eastern countries today. You keep your head down and hope the genocidal gremlins running your country don't notice you. They have more guts then I'll ever have.

I give Pope Pius XII credit where credit's due. And he deserves credit for holding it together during those years.

ICAM! Especially since even Golda Meir defended Pius XII.

It’s well known that liberals are self prostituting children who bully the truer children of hard work into the dark. It’s common to see liberal cock sucking going on at Obama, and it is not uncommon to see altar boys killing other little brothers of the church by attracting strange attractions and fires upon themselves. The KGB has an arsenal of young geniuses trained to be talking like old prostitutes and sent out there.

Obama is their self prostituting altar boy. Check it out. He is a product of KGB prostitutive elite training of their youth, and benefits only that side.

Thanks, massmike, you beat me to the punch with you reference to Rabbi Dalin’s book which I also read. Truth is Pope Pius XII rescued and hid hundreds of thousands of Jews from the Nazis during WWII. Yes of course he had to be very careful about what he did and said in public as he was virtually a hostage of Hitler and Mussolini so most of what he did was behind the scenes.

The liberals have done a real hatchet job on Pius XII branding him as “Hitler’s Pope” as the author of one such hit piece entitled his his book smearing the Pope. Never mind the fact that Pius XII loathed the Nazis and went to great lengths to conceal hundreds of thousands of Jews hiding in Europe and others trying to escape.

The liberals have thoroughly succeeded in trashing Pius XII’s reputation much as the hatchet job they did maligning and smearing Sen. Joe McCarthy. For the truth on Joe McCarthy, I strongly urge everyone to read M. Stanton Evan’s book, Blacklisted by History.
