Study: 'Toxic Perfectionism' Major Part of LDS Women's Depression

OREM —Striving for perfection may be driving some female members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to depression, one researcher says.

Utah Valley University professor Kris Doty looked at depression among LDS women, finding that "toxic perfectionism" was one major factor of depression reported by the group. The other four factors, Doty found, were genetics, history of abuse, family relationships and feeling judged by others.

Over a one-year period, Doty and her colleagues looked at clinically diagnosed depressed women who identified as LDS. Seven of the women were using multiple medications to treat their depression, 19 were on only one medication and 10 had participated in therapy. Women in the study said the church's teachings about perfection led to painful misinterpretations wherein many women believed they could not make mistakes. This belief, Doty said, caused them to "become hyper-competitive and anxious."

At a symposium on the topic Thursday, study participants said church leaders were reminding women —especially mothers —that they are not required to be perfect.

what exactly is wrong with striving to be perfect?

Crawl up the steps 'til your knees are a bloody mess; if it makes you feel any better.

I lived in the Mormon community for years and was even married to a woman who became a Mormon and believe it or not the Mormon women want to rule the roost just as much or more than women from other denominations and my wife is not the only one i got this opinion from.

Was?

Can I assume that you are no longer married to this MORMON woman?

Also i usually take up for the down trodden.

When a person has been trodden down themselves, and they escape it, it's only natural that they usually DO tend to try to help others trapped in the same situtation.

” how Mormon women feels inferior.”

Note: They feel inferior. The church doesn’t make them feel that way. They put the burden on themselves. They can just as easily take it off.
It’s not just a Mormon thing. Yes, the church teaches submission to men but so does the Bible. The “keeping sweet” principle is Mormon in nature but it is still voluntary. “Keeping sweet” doesn’t mean you have to work full-time and clean the house until it is spotless.

While Utah does have the highest rate of antidepressant use in the United States, there is no evidence that this is because of stress from the LDS lifestyle and culture.

"It's extremely important that we do more research to understand how and why these drugs are used and the link with other chronic conditions," David Sundwall, director of the Utah Department of Health, said in a press release.

Stay tuned...

That is right,
I serviced heaters, cook stoves, washers back in the fifties, was in most every house in the Mormon town where i lived, i did not see any difference between the Mormon women than any one else, and this was including a clean house, i was a little suprised because i expected to.

I’ve never seen a difference. The only difference I see is the number of kids and that leads to a messy house, especially if the wife works. The ward in the next county consists basically of one family and it has 300 members. It’s all the families that married into that family and all their kids and who married them.
Well, there’s all that weird Mormon schlock that seems to show up at every house but that’s another story. It’s harmless but weird. And that whole “We are really into family. Our family is the most important thing. We want the best for our children unless that child leaves the Mormon church”. I’ve noticed that has calmed down a bit though.

Would be glad to if they ask a direst question, as long as it is not a misleading one.

But to start with, the thread was not about the gospel but about how hard Mormon women had to work, gee whiz can,t they find something besides the work ethic to condemn them on?

Right, reformed drunks thinking that because they could not handle their wine that no one else can and can become the most judgmental people in the world, no one else could stop them from drinking but some how they think they can handle some one else,s problem.

Admitting you don’t know is a good first step.

Now then, if you can get in contact with your EMOTIONS over this matter, you might determine the source of your distrust: the messenger or the message.

It has nothing to do with EMOTIONS and i already know the source of the distrust, a turncoat is not trust worthy to one side or the other and may not be trusted by either side.

Right and i don,t think there is any church any where that every one is going to agree with, in my opinion many people have religion and faith confused.

Luke ch 6
27
But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,

28
Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.

All of the comments made here about the Mormon people are not even defended by the Mormons them selves, if there is i missed it, so it appears to me that they are doing just what Jesus said to do, to turn the other cheek
and not to meet accusations with accusations.

Too bad more people don,t think of the faith individuals show by these simple little things, i am not defending the Mormon religion any more than any other religion but just seeing the good in people in spite of their religion.

My prayer is that i can put what faith i have into the works Jesus said to do.

And if i am ever accused of being a Christian, i sincerely hope my accusers can come up with some kind of evidence.

“Note: They feel inferior. The church doesn’t make them feel that way. They put the burden on themselves. “

Oh, sure. Mormon women can “put the burden on themselves” by accepting the condemnation, disappointment and rejection by their husband, family, extended family, friends, church leaders, mormon high priests, and just not worry about eternal failure, lack of resurrection if their husband is not pleased with them, being stuck in a lower level of heaven and forever away from the presence of God.
It’s only all their relationships, authorities and their mormonic gods.

Those silly mormon women must be amazingly weak to put that burden on themselves!

Instead, they should just smile and not worry about any of it.
