Kevin Walsh of the University of Richmond School of Law writes:

The twitterverse is alive with tweets about Justice Scalia’s headgear for today’s inauguration. At the risk of putting all the fun speculation to an end . . . The hat is a custom-made replica of the hat depicted in Holbein’s famous portrait of St. Thomas More. It was a gift from the St. Thomas More Society of Richmond, Virginia. We presented it to him in November 2010 as a memento of his participation in our 27th annual Red Mass and dinner.

Wearing the cap of a statesman who defended liberty of church and integrity of Christian conscience to the inauguration of a president whose policies have imperiled both: Make of it what you will.

Until people are willing to accept martyrdom for their beliefs we won’t win.

Sir Thomas More (/ˈmɔr/; 7 February 1478 – 6 July 1535), known to Catholics as Saint Thomas More since 1935, was an English lawyer, social philosopher, author, statesman, and noted Renaissance humanist. He was an important councillor to Henry VIII of England and was Lord Chancellor from October 1529 to 16 May 1532. More coined the word "utopia" – a name he gave to the ideal and imaginary island nation, the political system of which he described in Utopia, published in 1516.

Well done, Justice Scalia! Although probably too subtle a statement for Bronco Bama to figure out.

Gotta love Scalia.

BTW, the detail in that painting of St. Thomas More is staggering, especially the red velvet sleeves. Amazing that the effect was accomplished with a paint brush.

Some of Mad Mag’s stuff is quite memorable, although I usually found their politics quite fecal.

That’s why they’re called “masters.”

More was charged and convicted of Misprision of Treason for failure to acknowledge the Oath of Succession.

Yes, Scalia is making a statement.

I'd hazard that there are multiple layers of 'statement' in the act of wearing that hat.

I doubt that His Execrable Majesty Emperor Barackula has the wit or cultural background to get any of them. If he were actually American, he might get it ... but a Kenyan?

I like the hat better than Michelle’s “Boob Belt ‘13”.

There’s a great movie called “A Man For All Seasons” based on this man. A little high brow but great. I think Paul Scofield was in it.
