The Generations of Adam...Genesis 5 pt 1

This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him; Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created. And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, and after his image; and called his name Seth: And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters: And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died.(Genesis 5:1-5)

The Book of Genesis is divided into eleven sections, by the use of the “Toledoth” formula. “Toledoth” is the Hebrew word for “Generations”. Genesis contains the accounts of the ‘toledoth’ of the heavens and the earth, and of Adam, Noah, Shem,Ham and Japheth, Terah, Ishmael,Isaac, Esau, and finally of Jacob, each section being marked by the phrase ,”These are the generations of…”.

Note that God created Adam in His likeness, as we were told earlier in the creation account. But by the time Adam begat a son, it was ‘in his own likeness’ that he was begotten.. Adam was made “in the Image of God” but Seth was born in the ‘likeness and Image of Adam…” .

All of Adam’s children indeed bear the “Image and likeness of God...”. However there is also a sense in which we all inherit the ‘Image of Adam‘ also. As children of Adam we are born with a fallen nature, already corrupted, and estranged from God. As the first of the human race, Adam bore in himself the whole race, representing us in the garden.

When Adam fell away from God, we also fell away, in him, and we bear in our unregenerate nature the fallen and corrupted ‘image of Adam’. Thus king David laments in the penitential psalm,

Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.(Psalm 51:5)

The Psalmist is not castigating his mother and father, nor the circumstances of his conception, rather King David is in horror realizing the totality of iniquity in his life, that he has been a sinner through and through since his very birth!

There is a mysterious solidarity of the human race,’from one blood He made us all”, we were all ‘in Adam’ and share not only the dignity inherent in being made ‘in the Image of God’ , but also in the fall and shame of Adam, and in his estrangement from God.

The New Testament bears this out, especially in the teaching of Paul, who revealed that in God’s economy there are two representative men, Adam or Christ, (the last Adam), in whom the entire human race are alternately identified.

For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.(I Corinthians 15:21-22)

By virtue of the first birth, we all bear the fallen nature of Adam, the transgressor. All of humanity shares in his shame, folly, corruption and rebellion, and all of us have personally repeated his defection from God, for we are “by nature, children of wrath…”(Ephesians 2).

But there is another Adam, the last Adam, Jesus, who by his death and resurrection offers us a New Birth, we can receive a new nature, We can die a death,(out of Adam) and be born again(into Christ)!

But all who are only born of Adam, must die, so Genesis 5 is among other things a litany of death. Begetting and dying, begetting and dying, begetting and dying for century after century the generations of Adam are living out the stern warning God gave Adam in the beginning,”The day you eat of this tree, you shall die…or literally, In dying you shall be dying.”

But this chapter isn’t only about the inheritance of a fallen nature, and centuries of birth and death. God is good, and where sin abounds, grace does much more abound. We come next to an amazing prophecy of hope hidden in the names of the line of Seth.

“begotten.. Adam was made “in the Image of God” but Seth was born in the ‘likeness and Image of Adam…” . “

However, the Bible verse you quote says Adam was made in the ‘likeness’ of God’, not ‘image’.

Is it me or you ?

Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

Might help to identify just which Bible you’re using, as well as to turn to the original language. I’ve always preferred the KJV due to it’s masterful use of the English language, rendering sometimes awkward translated phrases into beauty and grandeur. But, that does not mean this is the only Bible that represents a strong effort to be true to the original meaning and intent in translation.

Thanks for the response.

I assumed you just make a mistake, and was offering you a chance to correct it.

Now, you provide the quote from Genesis, where it has both... ‘our image, after our likeness’.

This totally destroys your assertion that ‘Adam was made “in the Image of God” but Seth was born in the “likeness and Image of Adam…” .

Do you see what I am talking about ?

I’m not criticizing the rest of your piece. I enjoy reading your articles. I just don’t understand how I am supposed to accept a contradictory argument in support of the main theme of the article.

Might help to identify just which Bible you’re using,

Thank you for your response. I didn't provide the 'quote', ergo I cannot 'identify' the reference.

I said that Pastor Bill argued that God said Adam was made in his 'image', and then provided a quote that said God made Adam in his 'likeness'.

Now, he has provided a quote which states both.

The following statement by Pastor Bill, in his article, then makes no sense, at least to me.

"Adam was made “in the Image of God” but Seth was born in the ‘likeness and Image of Adam…” . "

All I want is a clarification of the "BUT" part.

If we take the quote given by Pastor Bill as a good 'source', then it would mean his original statement should have been..." Adam was made “in the likeness and Image of God” but Seth was born in the ‘likeness and Image of Adam…”

Is this not true? If so, then what does the BUT in the sentence mean now ?

Thanks UCANSEE2, I appreciate your comments and can see where I would appear contradictory. Communication with clarity is a difficult but worthwhile pursuit.
I was trying to say in the rest of the article that Seth, and all of the children of Adam, have indeed inherited the Image of God from our first father, but we have also inherited Adam’s fallen nature,(ie the Image of Adam). This is the human condition since the fall, and can only be remedied by the work of the “Last Adam” through the new birth. I hope this helps. Thanks again!

Add Hebrew to the mix and...

26 Then ELoHIM said, “Let us make ADaM in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

27 So ELoHIM created ADaM in his own image, in the image of ELoHIM he created him; male and female he created them.

***

Ergo: ELoHIM is male and female.

Thanks for your rely to my questions.

I appreciate your comments and can see where I would appear contradictory.

I just wanted to make sure it wasn't just me.

I was trying to say in the rest of the article that Seth, and all of the children of Adam, have indeed inherited the Image of God from our first father, but we have also inherited Adam’s fallen nature,(ie the Image of Adam).

I couldn't agree more. Thank you.

Then ELoHIM said, “Let us make ADaM in our image, in our likeness,

I have a question. I know it's been asked before, but I like getting different perspectives from different people.

Who was ELoHIM speaking TO when he said this?

pastorbillrandles, could a righteous God condemn Adam, and/or you and I, if Adam, or us, could not live a sinless life?

May God, our Father, lead us all to His truth, BVB

ELoHIM is plural so... a little background.

Exodus 20:12 Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

Matthew 23:9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.

???

Hallelujah is a Hebrew phrase which means Hallel Praise, lu to, jah YaH. Praise to YaH.

YaH, Yud Hei, well who is YaH?
Yud is masculine and Hei is feminine, ergo YH are your parents, of your soul.
In Genesis 1 souls were created, the physical form of ADaM was formed in chapter 2.
The image of ELoHIM in chapter 1 is not flesh.

Bob I don’t always answer immediately,, I just got in from a busy day. In answer to your question, A Righteous God would never do anything unrighteous, therefore his condemnation is always just and true. Jesus said “this is the condemnation, light came into the world but men loved the darkness more than the light, because their deeds were evil”.

Thank you for the response. I agree with you God would never do anything unrighteous. How do you think God could prove it was possible for Adam or us to live a sinless life?

Yeshua HaMashiach ben ELoHIM...

The Hebrew ‘name’ for God, right ?

Do you think anyone really has (or even knows) the ‘true’ name (if there is such a thing) of ‘God’ ? What ‘language’ does God speak ?
