Voter approval of a Washington state referendum legalizing same-sex marriage was greeted by a call for “real and respectful dialogue in our church” by the organization of Catholics supporting Referendum 74 — and by bishops’ statements their sees to stronger catechesis on traditional and sacramental marriage.
“We are very proud that Catholics around the country followed their consciences rather than the rigid position of the hierarchy, and their voting reflected the spirit of Catholic social teaching,” said the statement from Catholics for Marriage Equality Washington, alluding to other successful popular votes legalizing same-sex marriage in Maine and Maryland.
“Sadly, our bishops chose to ignore both Gospel and pastoral wisdom in their aggressive opposition to civil marriage for all God’s children,” the statement added. “They also failed to stand up for deep Catholic American respect for proper separation of church and state and for simple fairness to all.”
In a statement released the day after the balloting, when it seemed likely the marriage equality law would be ratified 52 percent to 48 percent, Seattle Archbishop J. Peter Sartain said he was “disappointed that so many voters failed to recognize marriage between a man and a woman as the natural institution for the permanent, faithful covenant of love for a couple, for bringing children into the world, and for nurturing and educating those children.”
“Despite the election results, the campaign has been an opportunity for the church to reaffirm its consistent teaching on marriage,” Sartain wrote. “The campaign to preserve marriage as a union between a man and a woman represents a starting point for a long-term effort to educate Catholics about its meaning and purpose. The church offers a vision of marriage and family life that enriches our communities and society and we remain committed to that vision while respecting the......

“Catholics for Marriage Equality” is a misnomer. The moment the made the decision to support gay marriage they were no longer catholic. Tired of these former catholics going out there and completely violating the moral laws of the church and still claiming to be Catholic. Religion is a choice not a nationality, if you do not follow the teachings of a religion then you are not of that religion it is just that simple.

The Church's actual positions are:
(1) That the immigration system, which is clearly broken, needs to be reformed on a basis that respects the dignity of the human person.
(2) That there needs to be a system of social support for the needy and helpless. If that basic minimum can be supplied by more efficient use of taxes rather than increasing them, the Church could never have any objection.
(3) That life in prison without parole is preferable to the death penalty. The Church is not against punishing criminals, but generally against the state killing its citizens.
The Bishop should have made it clear that anyone who joined a group with that name was at once a "former Catholic".
There's no "respectful dialogue" with Satan, it's that simple, and until the Bishops wake up enough to recognize Satan's troops for what they are rather than seeing them as misguided sheep nothing will change.
This is very disappointing. We’ll see plenty of calls for the Church to capitulate and we’ll be fighting the administration every day for the next four years.

1. Any so-called Roman Catholic who supports same-sex “marriage” probably isn’t an active Catholic anyhow (at best Xmas and Easter only)
2. Unless the various dioceses in WA could identify conclusively the memebers of such a group and formally threaten them with excommunication, it wouldn’t make any difference.

I do not correct your false statements to gain appreciation, but to fulfill a moral obligation to speak up when the faithful are being slandered.
Where was Archbishop Sartain during the weeks before the election? No pastoral letter was read during the homily at my parish last weekend. I haven’t seen any public statement regarding the hundreds of self-proclaimed Catholics who listed their names in a full-page ad supporting the queers.
Where was the admonishment that anyone voting for that Kenyan usurper and his Democrat minions down ballot that support abortion is complicit in evil and places their immortal soul in jeopardy?
He failed in his pastoral duty to his flock and so did many of his parish priests. I would rather cast the cafeteria Catholics out of the church without regard to the fiscal consequences.

Your personal opinion of what constitutes bravery or cowardice is, frankly, worthless.
There are two considerations here:
(1) Life without parole is a reversible penalty if legal mistakes have been made.
(2) Placing the power of life or death in the hands of the state is a weighty matter.
In the United States of America, for the moment, this power may be exercised responsibly and justly. In much of the world it is not. And the Church has the responsibility to weigh matters universally, not geographically or temporally.
