Bishop of Durham Justin Welby, a former oil industry worker, is set to become the next Archbishop of Canterbury.
It is thought the 56-year-old will be named on Friday as the replacement for Rowan Williams, who steps down in December after 10 years in the post.
Bishop Welby became a bishop only a year ago when he took up the Church of England's fourth most senior post.
Downing Street sources have confirmed the next archbishop will be formally announced on Friday morning.
On Tuesday, leading bookmakers stopped taking bets on the succession after a run of bets on Bishop Welby.
The Daily Telegraph reports that Bishop Welby has agreed to accept the post. The Times newspaper says he will be named as the new Primate this week.
Bishop Welby said he was unable to comment on the speculation.
Speaking during a break in the Parliamentary Commission on Banking Standards inquiry, of which he is a committee member, he said: "I am not able to comment, only Lambeth Palace can."
Bishop Welby was educated at Eton and Cambridge University, and then spent 11 years in the oil industry before studying theology at Durham. He was ordained in 1992.
He became Bishop of Durham in November 2011, having served as Dean of Liverpool since 2007.

The BBC says that he opposes gay marriage.
“While he has rigorously defended the Church’s right to oppose single-sex marriages.”
This is a bit of a shocker.
“Theologically, he is unashamedly part of the evangelical strand of the Church, upholding a more traditional and conservative interpretation of the Bible than some.”

It has been noticed by some that the Queen of England has never mentioned homosexuals or their issues such as same-sex marriage, whereas she often mentions OTHER, specific groups of her subjects. The Queen has modernized herself in her royal role quite a bit through the years, but that one omission on her part is interesting to me.
This guy fits the profile that might be unusual in these times, but it does fit the image projected on that issue by the Queen, who is head of the Church of England (not in actuality, but in name).
Well, I’m an ex-Anglican now Catholic I left over this issue. If Rowan’s finally gone that is good news for the Anglican church. This fellow has really come up out of nowhere. As much as I’d rather all the Anglicans would come over, :), I’ll be very happy if he can curtail some of the excesses.
Good riddance to Rowan, for sure.
The Queen must have been quietly miserable during Rowan’s tenure...it is so obvious, by her glaring OMISSION, that she is from the old school on this issue and isn’t going to change now that she’s entering her late eighties, either.

I admire the Queen. Love is too strong a word. And I feel sorry for her that the rest of her family is such a group of unprintables.
