Obama wins with the Catholic vote

November 7, 2012 By

Details, from Catholic News Agency:

The Catholic vote was divided much as was the rest of the nation’s voters, leaning slightly in favor of Obama. A final Gallup poll, reflecting tracking from Nov. 1 to 4, showed Catholics favoring Obama by 52 to 45 percent.

“The Catholic vote, like any number of votes, does have the potential to make an impact,” said Gregory Smith, a senior researcher who specializes in Catholic politics at the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion and Public Life.

While they do not vote as a unified group, Catholics are significant in elections because of their large numbers, making up approximately one in four U.S. voters, he said.

Smith said it is difficult to pinpoint what effect the contraception mandate and religious freedom issues are having on the Catholic vote this year.

And there’s this:

In his concession speech Tuesday night, Romney encouraged fellow Republicans to join him in praying for President Obama “and for this great nation.”

“We look for our pastors, priests, rabbis, and counselors of all kinds to testify of the enduring principles upon which our society is built: honesty, charity, integrity and family,” he said.

From the Catholic Sentinel:

The vote is still being parsed, but experts think the majority of the Catholic vote went for President Obama. Catholics who attend Mass weekly seem to have favored Romney.

Catholics represent more than a quarter of the electorate and have voted for the winner of the popular vote in every presidential election since at least 1972. Both campaigns conducted intense outreach to Catholic voters and had Catholic vice presidential nominees. Meanwhile, Hispanic voters also broke heavily for Obama by a 39-point margin.

Exit polls noted that the economy was a top issue and voters were evenly split over which man would do better at fixing it. But the president was seen by voters as more empathetic, some polls said.

It appeared Republicans would retain their majority in the House, and that Democrats would hold their lead  in the Senate.

It’s close, but Washington state voters appear to have approved same sex marriage in their state. Voters in Maryland and Maine made the same choice. That breaks a string of 32 losses in various states, including Oregon.

In all three states, the electorate countered an effort by Catholic bishops, who argued that marriage must abide by natural law. Baltimore Archbishop William Lori had priests read a letter in defense of traditional marriage from the pulpit.

Minnesota voters rejected a measure that would have defined marriage as between a man and a woman.

And from Huffington Post:

Despite strong assaults about everything from what opponents have called a “war on religion” for his healthcare reform policy’s provisions on contraception coverage and pastors’ protests against his support of same-sex marriage to questions over the his support of Israel and his relationship with Jewish voters, President Barack Obama was reelected to a second term Tuesday night with support from religious and especially nonreligious voters.

Obama carried Electoral College votes in several battleground states where religious voters were key parts of the electorate, including Catholic-heavy Ohio, evangelical-heavy Iowa, and Virignia. Another swing stage with a large population of religious voters, Florida, was too close to call by early Wednesday morning.

In his concession speech from Boston, Republican challenger and former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney congratulated Obama, saying it was a time of “great challenges” in America and that “I pray the president will be successful in guiding our nation.” He thanked supporters for their prayers and said Americans will “look to our pastors and priest and rabbis and counselors of all kinds” as the nation moves on from the election. “Ann I join you to earnestly pray for him and for this great nation,” he said, asking God to “bless America.”

Speaking at his victory speech in Chicago, Obama thanked supporters and “every American who participated in this election,” saying that voters “reaffirmed the spirit that triumphs.” Returning to his motivational, pastor-like tone that was common in his first campaign, Obama referenced the American “belief that our destiny is shared” and said a sense of “love, charity, duty and patriotism” is the hallmark of the nation’s culture.

“Together, with your help and God’s grace we will continue our journey forward and remind the world just why it is that we live in the greatest nation on Earth. God bless you. God bless these United States,” Obama said.

Initial exit polls — which are expected to change through Wednesday as more results come in — showed a mix bag of support for Obama and Romney among religious voters. Among people who said they attend religious services weekly, for example, exit polls indicated Romney took a significant lead. But among voters who said they attend services “occasionally” or “never,” Obama had large leads.

Early exit poll results also showed Obama losing the overall white evangelical vote to Romney, but winning the overall Catholic vote by just a few points. Among Jewish voters, initial exit polls showed Obama having an overwhelming lead over Romney, but preliminary results also showed him winning a smaller percentage of the Jewish vote than he did four years ago.

(from Greg Kendra) Early exit poll results also showed Obama losing the overall white evangelical vote to Romney, but winning the overall Catholic vote by just a few points.

(From Patrick Archbold) Another lesson is that Catholics just don't care in the slightest about the persecution initiated by this President and about the unborn. Every indication is that Catholics have granted an imprimatur for their own oppression. The reasons for this are a topic for another post....I am buying beer, bullets, and a bus ticket to Texas and maybe somebody someday will pick the good fight.

To those in the Catholic Church who voted conservative, and to the bishops who exhorted Catholics to do so, thank you.

Well now, that's interesting. If you subtract the black vote from the Evangelical total, AND subtract the Hispanic vote from the Catholic total, what do you get?

No, I haven't done the math; but I expect Alex Murphy will do so for us all, by and by. (Please include charts, graphs, statistics and clickable headlines, bro.)

What it proves that some people --- an electrorally critical percentage of people --- vote by their skin color and their zip code, more than by the plain Christian Doctrines of their own churches.

That's true across denominational lines. To our sorrow.

Dear yefragetuwrabrumuy,

“Hypothetically, it is comparable to a situation in which over half the Catholics living in a nation embraced unholy paganism, while continuing to call themselves Catholic.”

Actually, I don't think that's hypothetical or comparable. No non-pagan, no one who holds to Judeo-Christian morality in any way, shape or form, could vote for a monster that doesn't even think born children should be protected in law.

Over half of Catholics in America are pagans.

Including many priests and most of the bishops.

"We all wish President Obama well," Lombardi said, "that he might serve law and justice for the good and the growth of every person, respecting human values and spiritual essentials, in the promotion of a culture of life and religious freedom... and effectively promote integral human development, justice and peace in the world."

These people are delusional!!!!! They certainly are not listening to God's word. Obama is more like the anti-Christ than like Jesus and should not be congratulated for anything he accomplishes. The Holy See has sunk to new lows in my eyes.

Besides, the story wasn’t about Catholics staying home, it was about over half of them voting for Obama. So look for another reason they didn’t support Romney. Likely the social justice crowd, and the ones who identify as catholic but never attend mass.

Those people would never have voted for an Akin or Mourdoch clone. And the other half voted as good Christians for the better choice than the marxist muslim baby killer.

**We will continue to stand in defense of life, marriage, and our first, most cherished liberty, religious freedom.

Please, God, your vote is not counted. Help to turn the Catholics back to the basics of their faith.

Time to purge the church of lukewarm Catholics.

One might be tempted to do that until one realizes that it is the Church's job to (try to) save souls. Not to abandon the souls to the devil. But certain bishops are not suitable for their positions and should be excluded from clergy, yes.

Pro aborts are CINOs — not REAL Catholics.

There is a big difference.

Yup. Am currently doing a Bible study of Revelation - scary. At the same time, however, I’m at peace because I have a close and personal relationship with my Savior.

A VERY mushy letter from the Cardinal.

He should have been MUCH stronger with his words on the Democrat stances on abortion, homosexuality, and assaults on religious freedom.

But I suspect the Cardinal is too respectful of Obama's positions on immigration and social justice to make such a strong statement. Very disappointing.

Catholics aren’t delusional.

Read your Bible about wishing evil on someone. It will only come back to you.

I guess you can't rectify four or five decades (and counting) of episcopal ineptitude and moral cowardice with a "Fortnight for Freedom".

Who knew?

I wonder, Dr Kopp, how many actual Catholics remain in America. From the voting indications, it appears cinos are the majority now.

The Catholics that I know who voted Obama attend mass every Sunday.

That was my experience too. When I tried to talk to them about what Obama is doing to our church. They got mad, said it wasn't true and it was just a big lie concocted by the bishops and the K of C to subjugate women and cover up for child sex abuse.

These were active participants in the church--in the choir, teaching C.C.D., etc.

It was then I realized how bad things were.

...or...Patrick Archbold can read and heed 2 Tim. 2:15 and understand where we ARE on God's TImeline. We are NOT setting up an earthly kingdom for Christ to return to, we are NOT Israel, and God is NOT building a new nation of kingdom believers while Israel is temporarily set aside and blinded. He is building a BODY of believers, whose inheritance is in the heavenlies and who are admonished to keep their eyes on things ABOVE, NOT on things on this earth. (Col. 3:1,2). Partrick Archbold can understand that we, the Church the BOdy of CHrist, are made up of individuals, not groups, not nations, not religious buildings. And that we are NOT in some kind of religious revival, as Peter spoke of in Acts. We are in the days of apostacy, as Paul spoke of in 2 Tim. So that what is happening here is easily understood, according to GOd's Timeline.

It is about getting the gospel of the grace of God out while there is still time. 2 Cor, Chapters 5,6.

With a heavy heart — I extend my thanks.

I went to a Bible study last night and wholly expected to come home and find Romney winning. When I saw a headline on my browser that it was Obama, my heart just fell.

Lord have mercy on us.

There is one vote that isn’t counted — and someone posted an email on it last night.

God’s vote isn’t counted, and I think we will see some very interesting things happen among the believers in God now. (And it will be along the lines of rebellion against Obama in my estimation.

Something else that needs to be checked on, please, cause you’re the guy to do it. How many of those who voted for Obama — not just Catholics — were on welfare of some kind? Food stamps? Free meals for kids at school, etc.?

You left off “union” and that the democrats are for the “poor,” the reasons stated by the Catholics I know. My parents are so devastated by the amount of their fellow Catholic parishioners, Knights of Columbus and all, who willing and happily stated they are voting/voted for Obama. Pretty much the same thing where I live.

Is there a complete list state by state breakdown of the exit polling? I mean how useful is a national number when we vote by state and the electoral college? For example, Romney won the Catholic vote in Ohio by 9 points, last time Mclame won it by only 5.
