A Catholic academic institution in Ohio has come under fire for having a class in which homosexuality is declared a "deviant behavior" alongside things like murder, rape, drug use, and prostitution.
Franciscan University of Steubenville came under fire from a homosexual alumnus who was researching a story and stumbled upon the course description for Social Work 314. SWK 314 is a course that focuses on deviant behavior, stating that behaviors to be "primarily examined" would include "murder, rape, robbery, prostitution, homosexuality, mental illness, and drug use."
While Tom Sofio of the public relations department at Franciscan University declined to give direct comment to The Christian Post, he did provide a statement released last week.
"Franciscan University bases its educational mission on the teaching of Christ as proclaimed in Sacred Scripture and Tradition and authoritatively interpreted by the Magisterium of the Catholic Church," reads the statement. "Accordingly, Franciscan University follows Catholic Church teaching in regard to homosexuality and treats homosexual persons with 'respect, compassion, and sensitivity' (Catechism of the Catholic Church, No. 2358) while holding homosexual acts as 'intrinsically disordered' (Catechism, No. 2357)."
According to NBC News, the controversy began when an alumnus who belonged to a Facebook group of homosexual graduates of Franciscan stumbled upon the course description while doing research on a story about a rape that took place near the campus years earlier.
The alum posted the course description on the Facebook group's wall, prompting many to contact a social work accrediting agency to investigate the matter and to contact the university.
In an interview with NPR, Stephen Holloway, director of the office of accreditation at the Council on Social Work Education, said the course description was a matter of concern.
"The fact that homosexuality was identified in the course description as a deviant behavior raises a flag," said Holloway. "Understanding diversity and difference and their dynamics in society is critical for social workers to be effective in working with diverse populations."
In their official statement, Franciscan University defended the course description and the materials used for the Social Work class.
"The course description for this class, to which some are taking issue, is little more than abbreviated chapter headings from the primary course textbook," reads the statement. "It is a book used in more than a dozen public universities, and uses the term 'deviant' in the sociological sense, simply meaning different from the norm."
Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, told The Christian Post that the statements of some psychologists that homosexuality is normal are recent and political rather than scientific.
"There is an entire group of distinguished psychiatrists and psychologists, who think it is normal for adult men to be sexually attracted to boys, B4U-Act, but that doesn't mean that the shrinks are not themselves deviants," said Donohue.
"Having taught Social Problems to college students for a long time, I can say unequivocally that until fairly recent times, homosexuality was always listed as a deviant behavior. The change in thinking, seeing it as normal, is more of a political statement than a clinical one."
And I will defend to the death your right to think that and say it.
Tomorrow they’ll protest the physics professor who asserts that a flame is hot.
Deviant - is a person that deviates from the norm. Whether people think homosexuality is wrong or not at only somewhere between 2% and 4% of the population it is a devation from the 96%-98% who are normal or heterosexual.
It can be argued, from a scientific standpoint, that sodomy is unnatural. Unlike the vagina, there are no additional protections against STD’s in the keister. It’s not something nature has even considered, therefore. I would go farther and say that not only is homosexuality unnatural, it is in opposition to nature. That is why, for example, homosexuals are so often in opposition to nature’s God. I refuse to call them gay anymore. They are either homosexuals or somomites, the plain truth. The term “gay” was usurped by them to describe themselves as something that they’re not. I don’t find them to be “happy”. To me they seem angry and depressed most of the time.
Geez, these people are behind the times!
Haven’t they seen “The New Normal” on NBC? That’s the new show about a homosexual male couple who get a girl to be their surrogate mother, so the homosexual men can start a family.
They have to get with the program.
Isn’t it clever that the liberals at NBC named a show about homosexuality “The New Normal”? They want to make us think it’s all completely normal. Of course, everyday you see homosexual men with a girl who carries their baby.
” “Having taught Social Problems to college students for a long time, I can say unequivocally that until fairly recent times, homosexuality was always listed as a deviant behavior. The change in thinking, seeing it as normal, is more of a political statement than a clinical one.”
You can legalize, justify or rationalize homosexuality but it is still deviant. Always was and always will be 1984 notwithstanding.
I am still puzzled why Jim Boeheim of Syracuse was not treated like Joe Paterno for the sexual misbehavior of his coach Bernie Fine.
“Franciscan University of Steubenville came under fire from a homosexual alumnus”
Man, this reads like an advertisement. Go Steubenville!
“The alum posted the course description on the Facebook group’s wall, prompting many to contact a social work accrediting agency to investigate the matter and to contact the university.”
The libs are slick. They know the university won’t care about a few homos protesting, but they will be worried if their program is threatened with losing accreditation. Conservatives really should be trying to wrestle back control over those accrediting bodies, and professional organizations like the APA, or they will keep using these strategies against us to great effect.
Is there someone on here that could explain to me, as to HOW this is not deviant behavior? Apparently, I’m bassackwards on this.
And just like in, “Brave New World”, California has now outlawed the use of the words “Mother” and “Father”.
“murder, rape, robbery, prostitution, homosexuality, mental illness, and drug use.”
Wow that sounds like most California voters.
Free speech is not allowed in a perverted homosexual world.
Because ESPN is swamped with Syrexcuse alumi.
It is a deviant behavior as well as a perversion. It is the definition of both. I consider it a defect because if a person practiced it consistently they could not reproduce. None of that is a moral judgement just facts.
I agree and I might add that Joe Paterno was a good Catholic who supported President Reagan.
Boeheim, Jim Calhoun, and Calipari are three of the slimiest coaches in the NCAA basketball ranks.
Translation: they're going to tell the University that they will pull their accreditation unless the University pulls the course.
Of course, And this is why private schools end up looking like more expensive versions of the public schools.
If he was a good Catholic, his behavior was indeed tragic. It may be that he let his loyalty to the asst coach who, even if he was a pervert, was also an outstanding coach, override his higher duty to the kids that Sandusky was raping.
Makes as much sense as trying to carrot sticks in your ear.
Doesn't matter whether it's gay or straight couples doing it, either. An anus is not the kosher place to stick it.
And... isn’t it wownderful that all this is just in time for cephalosporin-resistant gonorrhea!
