FULL TITLE: Outrage at friar's claims that it is often the teenage boys who seduce priests in religious sex abuse cases... and he calls Sandusky 'a poor guy'

A friar has sparked outrage after claiming it is often the boys who seduce priests in religious sexual abuse cases.

In an interview with the National Catholic Register, Father Benedict Groeschel of the conservative Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, said he did not believe a priest found guilty of sexual absuse should go to jail if it was his first offence.

He even went on to describe disgraced Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky as a 'poor guy'.

Father Groeschel, an influential voice in the American catholic community, has written several books and appears weekly on a religious television network.

He said: 'People have this picture in their minds of a person planning to [be] a psychopath.

'But that’s not the case. Suppose you have a man having a nervous breakdown, and a youngster comes after him. A lot of the cases, the youngster — 14, 16, 18 — is the seducer.'

He added: 'Here’s this poor guy Sandusky it went on for years. Interesting: Why didn’t anyone say anything? Apparently, a number of kids knew about it and didn’t break the ice.

'Well, you know, until recent years, people did not register in their minds that it was a crime. It was a moral failure, scandalous; but they didn’t think of it in terms of legal things.'

'If you go back 10 or 15 years ago with different sexual difficulties — except for rape or violence — it was very rarely brought as a civil crime.'

I agree, some sort of power play within the Church. Liberal Catholics have always disliked him.

I think he may not have said most of the original interview - he probably can’t talk much and certainly not in such a coherent way. I suspect this is an ugly sabotage now.

You intimate that a Holy and righteous man, might be hiding Child pornography on his computer. Your right, I don’t know you, or do I wish to.

The powerplay is not from the church per se - probably from outside using the liberal pawns.

That is exactly the response they were trying to elicit by this online article.

Does anyone know if Father Groeschel will no longer have his “Sunday Night Live” show on EWTN?

What a towering intellect Father Groeschel had in his prime. He has probably forgotten more than most of us will ever know. I think the coma after the accident, the stroke, and general aging are starting to take a toll on him. The poster who said his computer should be checked for child porn made an ignorant and scurilous statement. I saw Father give several conferences in Lexington, Ky in 2002 and it was a tour de force. He was still quite sharp. Pray for Father Groeschel. He is a saint who has been imprisoned for his defense of the unborn.

Actually, apart from certain religious, they did consider it a crime.

His audio shows seem to have been removed from the Ewtn web-site library. Very disheartening.

The Spider And The Fly

“Will you walk into my parlor?” said the fly to the spider;
“’Tis the prettiest little parlor that ever you may spy.
The way into my parlor is up a winding stair,
And I have many curious things to show when you are there.”
“Oh no, no,” said the big spider to the little fly; “to ask me is in vain,
For who goes up your winding stair can ne’er come down again.”

“I’m sure you must be weary, dear, with spinning up so high.
Well you rest upon my little bed?” said the fly to the spider.
“There are pretty curtains drawn around; the sheets are fine and thin,
And if you like to rest a while, I’ll snugly tuck you in!”
“Oh no, no,” said the big spider, “for I’ve often heard it said,
They never, never wake again who sleep upon your bed!”

Said the cunning fly to the spider: “Dear friend, what can I do
To prove the warm affection I’ve always felt for you?
I have within my pantry good store of all that’s nice;
I’m sure you’re very welcome - will you please to take a slice?”
“Oh no, no,” said the Big spider; “kind Lady Fly, that cannot be:
I’ve heard what’s in your pantry, and I do not wish to see!”

“Sweet creature!” said the little fly, “you’re witty and you’re wise;
How handsome are your long legs; how brilliant are your many eyes!
I have a little looking-glass upon my parlor shelf;
If you’d step in one moment, dear, you shall behold yourself.”
“I thank you, gentle Lady,” he said, “for what you’re pleased to say,
And, bidding you good morning now, I’ll call another day.”

The fly turned him round about, and went into her corner,
For well she knew the silly spider would soon come back again:
So she set a subtle meal in a little corner sly,
And set her table ready to dine upon the spider;
Then came out to her door again and merrily did sing:
“Come hither, hither, pretty spider, with pearl eyes and silver legs;
Your robes are red and black; there’s an hourglass upon your head;
Your eyes are like many diamonds bright, but mine are red as blood!”

Alas, alas! how very soon this silly silly spider,
Hearing her wily, flattering words, came slowly walking by;
With magic spinning movements he hung aloft, then near and nearer grew,
Thinking only of his hundreds of brilliant eyes and black and red hue,
Thinking only of his hourglass head. Poor, foolish thing! at last
Up jumped the cunning fly, and fiercely held the spider fast;
She dragged him up her winding stair, into the dismal corner wall-
Within her little parlor - but he ne’er came out again!

And now, dear little children, who may this story read,
To idle, silly flattering words I pray you ne’er give heed;
Unto an evil counselor close heart and ear and eye,
And take a lesson from this tale of the spider and the fly.

There was an actual article and he actually said that within the circumstances I linked above.

Why the editors ever published it is beyond me considering the National Catholic Register is a service of EWTN and Father Groeschel is an respected and well liked host of one of their shows. Maybe that bears investigation.

'Well, you know, until recent years, people did not register in their minds that it was a crime. It was a moral failure, scandalous; but they didn’t think of it in terms of legal things.'

What a load of road apples! This has ALWAYS been considered a sin in Christianity and child molestation is most certainly a crime in America and has been in every state for many, many years.

    Child sexual abuse is nowadays outlawed in almost all countries,[1][2] generally with severe criminal penalties, including in some jurisdictions, life imprisonment or capital punishment. An adult's sexual intercourse with a minor below the legal age of consent is defined as statutory rape,[3][4] based on the principle that an abusing adult is a criminal deviant who takes advantage of a minor, who is not capable of consent, and that any apparent consent by a minor could not be considered legal consent. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laws_regarding_child_sexual_abuse

Read this thread about St. Peter Damian's Book of Gomorrah: Homosexual Situation Graver than Damian's Time. Damian's book was written in the early part of the eleventh century. Homosexuality and pederasty among the clergy is NOTHING new.

He is a throwback to what was the dominant school of thought before the Meese Commission revealed to the public just how widespread and damaging pedophilia is.

Considering the renown of Fr. Groeschel, I find it hard to believe that if anyone had been molested by him they would keep quiet about it. I would like to think that perhaps he heard these types of comments in the confessional and in his infirm state they came spilling out. Fr. has given his whole life in service to the Lord. How very sad he should go out this way

EWTN - who will they have left? Fr. Corapi gone. Fr. Euteneuer gone. Now Fr. Groeschel. Satan never, ever sleeps. Prayers for the victimized everywhere.

Father Benedict Groeschel is suffering from dementia, and Alzheimer’s. Over the last year I’ve watched his cognitive abilities fail drastically. You have no idea who this man is, or what he’s accomplished in his life.

Yet he still has a regular program on EWTN and is let loose to respond to interviews and post his thoughts on the web site? Do you think he was talking about his genuine views on this subject or was he having a "senior moment"? Will someone be monitoring him now?

The article was in the Charlotte Observer newspaper today, too. NOT a smear campaign from an Email.

Maybe he felt this way for years but because of his accident and age he no longer has the mental filter to stop saying what he is thinking.

I know. Thanks. I thought it needed to be said that this was not some anonymous email sent out to smear someone for saying something he didn't really say. Unfortunately, that seems to be the knee jerk reaction whenever anything of this sort is posted.
