In Poland, Romney Praises Pope John Paul II

While visiting Poland today, Mitt Romney highlighted the legacy of freedom shared by their nation the United States. Featured prominently in Romney’s speech in Warsaw was recognition of the Pope from Poland, John Paul II, and his contribution to the fall of the Soviet Union.

“In 1979, a son of Poland, Pope John Paul the Second, spoke words that would bring down an empire and bring freedom to millions who lived in bondage. “Be not afraid” – those words changed the world,” Romney said.

After recalling Pope John Paul’s visit to Poland in 1979, Romney continued to speak about the pontiff’s commitment to the value of freedom.

Just because the last pope is from Poland doesn’t mean he is deserving of any praise. He lost an opportunity, although I believe he was part of the program, to erase the errors of Vatican II and to have restored the Church to what Jesus Christ had intended when he placed the responsibility on St. Peter for maintaining His Church in perpetuity.

I understand that Romney was being politically kind to make a nice reference to the late resident of Krakow.

I am reminded of a joke involving the late pope.

His secretary races into the papal office and says “Holy Father, I know this is hard to believe but the news I bear is good news and it is bad news.”

“Quick, father, tell me what the good news is.”

“Our Saviour is on the phone.”

“That’s marvelous. What possibly could the bad news be?”

“He’s calling from Salt Lake City!”
