Our homeschool association has a “Hobbit Reading Club” going on, and we learned yesterday that Bilbo and the dwarves left Rivendell on “Midsummer Day,” which is actually the Feast of John the Baptist (the solstice, unadjusted for jiggers in the space-time continuum) not the actual middle of calendar summer, which would be in the first half of August.
I don’t understand why summer “starts” on the solstice, when it’s been hot for weeks. And winter “starting” in December. I suspect nerds are involved.
