Seventeen men were ordained for service in the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham in London today.
At the largest single ordination in the UK for many years, the men - all former Anglican clergy - were ordained as deacons at the request of Monsignor Keith Newton, the Ordinary of the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham, by Auxiliary Bishop of Westminster and former Anglican, Bishop Alan Hopes.
The celebration marks the second year of ordinations for the Ordinariate, which was established in 2011 to allow Anglicans to enter into the full communion of the Catholic Church whilst retaining essential elements of their liturgical and spiritual heritage.
After the service Mgr Newton reflected on the day, saying, “It is wonderful to see these men ordained as deacons for service in the Catholic Church, within the Ordinariate. As we continue to grow and begin our work of faithful witness to the Gospel, it is important for us all to be reminded of the charism of the Deacon: proclamation, service, and Christian charity”.

This is all the more ironical because the famous Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham is an Anglican place of veneration.

How long before they become full priests?
There will be no collective ordination as for the diaconate but over the coming weeks and months, they will all be ordained to the priesthood, most likely in their own dioceses.

That confuses me, marshmallow. We have married deacons in our parish. Is there some provision for deacons who are married to become priests?
There are two types of deacons; permanent and transitional.
The men in your parish are likely permanent deacons. However, the transitional diaconate is the final stage before ordination for men who will become priests. For diocesan priests, the transitional diaconate usually lasts 12 months prior to priestly ordination.
Regarding the Anglican Ordinariate which is the subject of this article, most of the men who will be ordained to the Catholic priesthood are married former Anglican clergy. They were granted a special dispensation by the Pope allowing them to be ordained.
