Cardinal Tauran Laments ‘Right-Wing’ Ignorance of Islam
Catholic Culture ^ | 3/20/12

Speaking with Al Jazeera, the president of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue lamented mutual ignorance between Christians and Muslims.

“We succeeded in avoiding the clash of civilizations; let us avoid a clash of ignorance,” said Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran. In Europe, he stated, “there is a fear of Islam, but it is due to ignorance.”

“If you speak to right-wing groups, you realize that they have never opened a Qur’an and never met a Muslim.,” he continued. “There needs to be a big effort to educate, to inform them … because most of the problems are coming from misinterpretation or ignorance.”

Cardinal Tauran also criticized the attitudes of some Muslims towards Christians.

all the words are translated to English except Allah. Isn’t that a reference to God?? Or is it only their God who is Muslim only?

The God of Abraham is the God of the Jew and the God of Christians. Islam claims this is also their god, but there are numerous differences. Islam sees Jesus as a Prophet, not part of the Triune God.

So if I'm reading your question correctly, yes, the God of Abraham is the same God to the Jew, the Islamist, and the Christian.

I seriously you suggest you read the Robert Spencer blogsite I referenced. I would ask your Islamist friends about the verses I cited.

I would also ask them about the following:

Here’s an interesting contrast between the peaceful Islam and the hateful Christianity:

The example of Mohamed on adultery Sahih Muslim, Book 17: 4206

There came to him (the Holy Prophet) a woman from Ghamid and said: Allah's Messenger, I have committed adultery, so purify me. He (the Holy Prophet) turned her away. On the following day she said: Allah's Messenger, Why do you turn me away? Perhaps, you turn me away as you turned away Ma'iz. By Allah, I have become pregnant. He said: Well, if you insist upon it, then go away until you give birth to (the child). When she was delivered she came with the child (wrapped) in a rag and said: Here is the child whom I have given birth to. He said: Go away and suckle him until you wean him. When she had weaned him, she came to him (the Holy Prophet) with the child who was holding a piece of bread in his hand. She said: Allah's Apostle, here is he as I have weaned him and he eats food. He (the Holy Prophet) entrusted the child to one of the Muslims and then pronounced punishment. And she was put in a ditch up to her chest and he commanded people and they stoned her. Khalid b Walid came forward with a stone which he flung at her head and there spurted blood on the face of Khalid and so he abused her.Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) heard his (Khalid's) curse that he had huried upon her. Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: Khalid, be gentle. By Him in Whose Hand is my life, she has made such a repentance that even if a wrongful tax-collector were to repent, he would have been forgiven. Then giving command regarding her, he prayed over her and she was buried.

And now contrast Islam with the hateful Christianity:

The example of Jesus on adultery (John 8:1-11)

But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. Early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people were coming to Him; and He sat down and began to teach them. The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery, and having set her in the center of the court, they said to Him, "Teacher, this woman has been caught in adultery, in the very act. "Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?" They were saying this, testing Him, so that they might have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground. But when they persisted in asking Him, He straightened up, and said to them, "He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." Again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. When they heard it, they began to go out one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the center of the court. Straightening up, Jesus said to her, "Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?" She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said, "I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on sin no more."

He is the one speaking from ignorance. We’ve met the mooselimbs and we’ve read the child-molesting, murdering, pedophile’s bat-cave writings from Mad Mo. We KNOW what lunatics they are.

I’m Roman Catholic, but I find it very disturbing that a high-ranking Cardinal at the Vatican finds it necessary to even deploy the term “right-wing”, let alone singling us out as unread ignoramuses.

I believe it would be wise to fear this Cardinal...And how many other Cardinals are riding in the same saddle???

Tabari 7:97 The morning after the murder of Ashraf, the Prophet declared, "Kill any Jew who falls under your power."

Ibn Ishaq: 327 - “Allah said, ‘A prophet must slaughter before collecting captives. A slaughtered enemy is driven from the land. Muhammad, you craved the desires of this world, its goods and the ransom captives would bring. But Allah desires killing them to manifest the religion.’”

Ibn Ishaq: 992 - "Fight everyone in the way of Allah and kill those who disbelieve in Allah."

Just three of many examples of the religion of peace.

I studied the koran and islam for a year {at a Catholic Prep School an alternative religion was a requirement}, and it is more a political way of life with religion thrown in as the guiding hand.

It was patterned after the Judeo-Christan teachings and this, I believe, is one reason they hate both the Jews and the Christians.

At some points in history, mooselimbs had culture and power and knowledge but having gone backwards, they are very hateful and are trying to reverse history.

My tag line is the only cure for this gutter religion, all of them, there are no moderate mooselimbs.

His Eminence need only ask a fellow Catholic (a Melkite Catholic cleric, to be specific) about the true nature of Islam. He also happens to be Robert Spencer. If doesn't go that route, he only needs to talk to some lay folk from Nigeria, the Middle East, or the Philippines, not all of whom are "right wing."

Do Catholics and Muslims Worship the Same God?

PS - My Dad and his siblings are Catholics from the southern Philippines. Their political views vary, but they all agree that they don't like Islam.

Italian prelates never learn, They looked down their noses at Hitler, thinking that they could make a deal with him. Much like Chamberlain, they could not smell the sulphur burning because of their perfumed hankies.

"I think you've got it bass-ackwards, your Eminence."

Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran is the President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue. He is adhering to a policy set forth by the Vatican to respectfully study and build relationships of respect and trust with people of all religions.

How much dialog would there be if he refused to turn the other cheek? Jesus didn't die only for the saved.

I'm not sure what that has to do with the issue. I don't have a problem with "dialog" with anyone. However, I do have a problem with His Eminence's description of those who fear Islam as "right wingers", which he uses in a perjorative fashion, and he suggests that this fear is based on "ignorance".

There is a major feast day on the Church's calendar, Our Lady of the Rosary (Oct 7), which commemorates a military victory of Catholic forces over aggressive Islamic forces at the Battle of Lepanto, through the intercession of the Blessed Mother. I presume the Cardinal is aware of this. Were those brave men who went into battle against the Muslims "ignorant" also?

Similarly, Islamic Moors had to be physically tossed out of the Iberian peninsula after years of conquest and persecution of Catholic Spain and Portugal. These are historical facts with which any Catholic, with even a modest familirarity with history, would be familiar. Therefore, in light of this, His Eminence's description of those who fear Islam as "right wingers" is unhelpful at best and downright misleading at worst. Are we supposed to just ignore history? Was Lepanto an aberration and meaningless for today's world? Did we go to war simply because we failed to read the Qu'ran? Catholicism has a long and difficult history in coping with Islamic aggression and violence and that ought to teach us something.

It is most definitely not all a big misunderstanding and today's events in Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East bear this out.

I appreciate your perspective, but I trust the Church. I also know that ignorance of Islam is pretty rampant. Heck, ignorance of Catholicism is pretty rampant among our fellow right wingers on FR.

No, I read alot. I am a cradle Catholic.

What you point out is very important to the discussion that never seems to happen.
The press doesn't care about the truth. They bought the notion that Islam is a religion of peace.

Look at what Winston Churchill said about Islam. I believe this is why 0bama sent back the Churchill bust as one of the first things in office:

A quote from an 1899 book by Winston Churchill, "The River War", in which he describes Muslims he apparently observed during Kitchener's campaign in the Sudan

How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property - either as a child, a wife, or a concubine - must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.

Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen; all know how to die; but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science - the science against which it had vainly struggled - the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome.

What is it that is luring so many to the Muslim religion??
It is simple. Submit to Islam. You don't need to think. And you get killed if you leave the cult.

Pure Evil.
