'Beauty and Belief' - Acclaimed Islamic art exhibit at BYU

Curators hope collection helps bridge Islam and Western culture

PROVO, UTAH

Why would Brigham Young University — a Church-owned institution found in the heart of Mormon culture and heritage — play host to a massive exhibit of Islamic art grounded in the day-to-day culture of the Muslim world?

It's a fair question. One that exhibit and museum directors are eager to answer and engage. Dr. Sabiha Al Khemir, project director of the new Islamic-themed "Beauty and Belief," said she is often asked by associates from far outside Utah just why such an exhibit would open at BYU.

"Why BYU? Because here is a religious community who actually sincerely embraced the project, who is willing to cross bridges and in the making itself of this exhibition many bridges have been crossed," she said in a museum release. "That in itself is reinforcing to the message of this exhibition."

"Beauty and Belief" opens Feb. 24 at the BYU Museum of Art. Visitors will be introduced to a broad collection of objects that define the exhibit— the largest ever hosted by the museum. More than 250 objects were collected from 10 countries, 40 lending institutions and 10 private collections. Counted among the contributors are several international museums stretching from Great Britain to Morocco. The exhibit will be on display at the museum until Sept. 29. It will then be housed for short stints at museums in Indiana, New Jersey and Oregon.

Dr. Al Khemir likes to use the word "bridge" when discussing the "Beauty and Belief." It's prominently found in the exhibit's subtitle: Crossing Bridges with the Arts of Islamic Culture. Curators hope that museum visitors will study each object, step across a bridge of understanding and discover the common ground between Islamic and Western cultures.

The exhibit is not political — but it obviously arrives at BYU during a politically charged time in the world. Dr. Al Khemir and her associates hope that visitors will discover differing ways of seeing the Islamic world — and then leave with new understandings and insight about Islamic culture.

"Beauty and Belief" is, at once, a challenging and an accessible exhibit. On one hand, the collection of "art" is obviously different than many objects found in a traditional art exhibit. Instead of paintings or sculptures that share an easily recognizable narrative, most of the objects found here are household items such as bowls, dishes, textiles and decanters.

Yet each object tells a story of belief. The items were typically crafted by an anonymous artist who utilized their talent to both celebrate and communicate their love of God and His creations. Their artwork doubles as holy offerings.

Plenty of educational materials are found in the exhibit to help folks understand the history, purpose and nuances of each object.

It's hoped that a wide variety of visitors experience "Beauty and Belief," including school groups, Primary classes, Church youth groups and, of course, families and individuals.

Admission to the exhibit is free. Visit the exhibit's web site, www.beauty-and-belief.com or call (801) 422-8287 for more information.

More evidence of the close ties of mormon-owned university with Islam.

Islam: An Introduction and Bibliography

Long before the events of September 11, 2001, BYU Studies began working on this special issue focusing on Islam. The authors and editors who worked on this issue have tried to capture the spirit of a religion that provides guidance to the lives of millions of people worldwide. The ever expanding influence of Islam extends to the prominent and often controversial role that Islam plays in contemporary politics. In addition, Muslim theology, scripture, art, science, and communal values have made significant contributions to world civilization. And in quiet yet significant ways, dialogue and contact between Latter-day Saints and Muslims have increased. Consequently, the editors of BYU Studies believe an issue devoted to Islam will increase understanding and allow for continued dialogue and friendship between members of the two faiths. But for such a journey to be successful, one must first understand the basic features of Islam.

Waste of time. 9-11 taught me all I needed to know. Until Islam undergoes its own version of The Reformation, I’ll have nothing to do with a religion that directs its followers to lie to me, to kill me, and to enslave my wife and daughters simply because I’m not one of them.

Uh the only understanding the Muslims will have for Mormons is that they are heretics and need to be beheaded. Remember Mohammed was the LAST Prophet according to the Moo’s. Saying otherwise gets you a haircut at the collar.....

This is an anti-Mormon thread, therefore Mormon = Islam. A White Horse will arrive, and the Executive Branch will be forced to wear Magic Underwear!

Another "I'mnotamormonbut" heard from...ho hum.

One would think that a professed Jew would be more inclined to attack Islam rather than to jump in with apologetics for mormonism....

Circumcise a Latter Day Saint, Dead or Alive!

In response to the revived Mormon practice of “baptizing the dead by proxy” and its application to murdered Holocaust victims, even Anne Frank, and gay AIDs victims: defenders of the dignity of the dead offer our polygamous brethen a little taste of tit for tat!

1. Pick a Mormon from the database
2. Perform the brit. It’s (pretty) painless!

Be the first on your block to give Mitt a Brit!

Islamic art

The world's smallest collection. The whole exhibit is held in a phone booth and you can see it without changing positions.

Hear here! The vast majority of Westerners do not even know of taqqiya much less comprehend what it means when dealing with the Saudi elites all the way to the insane Imadinnerjacket in Iran. The Islamic demon has madressas all over the world, and every one of them can lie to the government in their area because the demonically inspired religion of Islam instructs them to do so until ALL can be enslaved to the lesser moon goddess whose name was stolen by a blood thirsty pedophile named Mohammed in his fabricating the religion called Islam. ... And Joe Smith ran him a strong second, so far.

Don’t know much about Mormonism and its history do you? They have been buddies for a long time and are very similar even to the point their prophet claimed he was a second Mohammed. Also, they work with Muslim charities rather than Christian ones out of choice.

You need to do some research...

“I will be a second Mohammed to this generation…whose motto, in treating for peace, was ‘the Alcoran [Koran] or the Sword,’ so shall it be eventually with us, ‘Joseph Smith or the Sword.’ ”[1] http://www.saintsalive.com/resourcelibrary/mormonism/qi-will-be-a-second-mohammedq

True. There are 2 billon Christians, half that many Muslims and half that many Hindus. Christianity predominates. It teaches to love your enemy, not kill them. Hinduism is so far off the wall that it really is only for Indians.

Secularists, the godless, leftists, relative moralists and Hollyweirdians hate Christianity because it condemns their life style. Other faiths don't condemn like the Christians. Christianity is SO anti-American ethos: more is better, stuff, money, fame, status and so on.

Catholics are especially the targets of those mentioned above because it condemns abortion, artificial contraception, divorce-remarriage, women priests, homosexual behavior, homosexual marriage and a host of other things Americans LOVE and promote.

Besides one becomes a bigot and/or anti-Semitic bigot if those other faiths are attacked. Attacking Christianity make the secularists, godless, leftists, relative moralists and Hollyweirians smile.

No Christians are attacked as much as Evangelicals are, they are truly seen as almost aliens and sub human by the media, they are portrayed that way in films and TV also.
